Moshe Williams, 30, and Carolyn Aune, 28, are booked at the Park County Detention Center and each are being held with a $1 million cash-only bond. After initially being charged with aggravated abuse prior to the child’s death, the Park County attorney’s office filed the new charge on Monday morning. The first degree murder charge carries a maximum sentence of the death penalty in Wyoming.

An initial hearing was held for the couple on the new charges Monday afternoon. County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jack Hatfield argued that bond be taken away altogether for the couple, as this is allowed for capital punishment cases in Wyoming when the “proof is evident or presumption great.”

Circuit Court Judge Bruce Waters rejected this and opted to stay with the current bond.

Paisleigh Williams passed away in Denver on April 4 as a result of the injuries she sustained through alleged child abuse. She was airlifted to Children’s Hospital Colorado from Cody for treatment.

Moshe Williams is the birth father of the victim while Aune has no biological relationship to them, but was living in the same home as the child and was considered a caretaker for her.

The couple’s arrest stemmed from an incident occurring in late March, when officers responded to the Cody Regional Health Emergency Room at the request of the hospital staff to investigate a report of an alleged child abuse involving the child.

New charges for case relate to evidence now going as far back as Jan. 1.

When Moshe Williams brought his child to the emergency room the child was unresponsive and emergency personnel noticed numerous bruises on her body.

Medical staff in Denver offered the opinion the victim’s injuries were a result of child abuse. An autopsy performed last Wednesday in Colorado reaffirmed this opinion, showed possible fractures to Paisleigh Williams' left clavicle, C7, ribs, bruising and scraping on her head, a detached bowel, possible fractures to her hands, swelling of the brain, blunt force trauma, and slight malnourishment.

Moshe Williams will have a preliminary hearing at 10:30 a.m. Friday while Aune will have hers at 9 a.m. on April 22.

The second Memorial Service will be at Ballard Funeral Home on Saturday, May 8, at 1 p.m. with refreshments and fellowship to follow at Cody Bible Church. The girl’s mother, Rebecca Holtsman, told Q2 on Monday that her daughter, Paisleigh Williams, died on Sunday.

“She was such a sweet little girl. She was so outgoing and so happy. She’s so loving, she was well-loved by so many people. She had an impact on so many different lives,” Holtsman said over the phone.

Court documents state the investigation began on Saturday, March 27, when Paisleigh was taken to the Cody Regional Health Emergency Room by her father.

Medical staff and officers noted she was unresponsive and had several bruises on her body, including her face, back, head and legs.

She was also intubated, and medical staff decided she needed to be flown to Children’s Hospital Colorado for treatment of internal injuries.

When questioned about the bruises and injuries, both Williams and Aune denied abusing the toddler.

They told detectives in the days leading up to her visit to the emergency room Paisleigh was constantly throwing up and they thought it might be a stomach bug.

They also said the injuries were possibly caused by falling off her toddler bed, playing with her 14-month old brother, and one of Aune’s three children who sleepwalks.

Williams, 30, and his partner Carolyn Aune, 28, are being held at the Park County Detention Center, each on a $1 million cash-only bond. Each is charged with the murder of Williams’ 2-year-old daughter Paisleigh Williams.

Both defendants have the right to waive their right to a preliminary hearing, which would automatically send their cases over to district court. Doing this would relieve Aune and Williams of having to engage a public hearing and address the allegations being brought against them.

Park County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jack Hatfield said he has no indication as to what will happen at this point.

Williams is being represented by public defender attorney Branden Vilos and Aune is being represented by public defender Travis Smith.
Williams hearing on murder charge delayed

Aune’s jury trial is scheduled for April 17.

Aune’s trial is underway:

A woman convicted in April of murdering her boyfriend’s toddler daughter is asking the judge who oversaw her jury trial to acquit her for lack of evidence and give her a new trial.

“None of the evidence shows proof of me recklessly inflicting bodily injury that then led to (the child’s) death,” wrote Carolyn Aune, who is 31 this year, in a letter to District Court Judge Bobbie Overfield. “I understand that there is a dead child and that is excruciatingly tragic.

“I am sorry she is dead, and I also agree that justice needs to be served but sending me away for my whole life … is not justice.”

Meanwhile, Aune’s codefendant, her former boyfriend Moshe Williams and the girl’s father, is awaiting his Oct. 30 homicide trial in the girl’s death.
