You're so Vain by Carly Simon mystery man

  • #141
Jagger's been ruled out by Carly anyway.
snip!

In the same rich vein, John Lennon vehemently denied "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" referenced LSD (and Samuel Beckett claimed there was no "God" in "Godot").

Article about Carly & Cat:

I don't think it was him- he seemed pretty sweet on her. What a cutie he was.

Hmmmm, Cat's real name is Steven Demetre Georgiou. So he fails the no V test.

Lucy in the sky with Diamonds has nothing to do with LSD. One day Julian brought home a picture he'd drawn of a friend named Lucy Vodden flying through the sky with diamonds around her. He said something to the effect of "Look dad, it's Lucy in the sky with diamonds." That's where Lennon got the idea.

Here's an article about her and Julian's final days with her. She died of Lupus and he picked up her hospital bills. The article is about a benefit concert for lupus research: http://www.theguardian.com/music/2009/oct/13/julian-lennon-lucy-song

...Julian Lennon has released a tribute to Lucy Vodden, a woman best known for inspiring the Beatles song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Vodden died last month after a long battle with lupus. All proceeds from the duet by Lennon and James Scott Cook will benefit charities that research the disease.

Lucy was written by Cook "in honour of the memory of Lucy". Although Julian was originally to contribute only background vocals, producer Todd Meagher suggested that it be expanded into a full-fledged duet....

http://www.americansongwriter.com/2013/06/joni-mitchell-returns-clarifies-dylan-comments/

From Joni Mitchell Interview that she barely backs away from:

...“The interviewer was an *******.” That’s a new quote from Mitchell, who recently sat down with CBC to clear up the whole Dylan thing. In case you haven’t been keeping up, a 2010 article by The Los Angeles Times quoted Mitchell as saying some naughty things about her fellow folkie. “Bob is not authentic at all,” she supposedly stated. “He’s a plagiarist, and his name and voice are fake. Everything about Bob is a deception....

So I think the underworld spy means he's a plagiarist. It's possible Dylan watched young talent and stole things from them. Not whole songs, but pieces. He could have had an assistant that scouted folkies and such. I may be reaching here, but I'm still sure it's about Bob Dylan.

In the 1994 interview above, CS implies the song is about one man....a man she loved...& she said "he hobnobs with the underworld"

Re: "ovid": Clue given during interview, as in.spoken? Or did she spell the letters out?
Just wondering if we can consider variations of enunciated "ovid" as in: auvid, ohvid, ohved, oh canada! etc.?!
Or am I  crazy! Ha. Would different spelled versions help any?....

According to the Daily Mail in the UK, Simon finally revealed the song was about openly gay producer David Geffen. However, after watching the vid clip a couple posts up, I find this hard to believe.

She says it backward and forward on the latest recording of You're so Vain back in 2009. People thought she was saying David and a London tabloid jumped to the conclusion that it was David a man she hadn't met before the song was released. He's also openly gay.

Her publicist said it sounds like Daaaaaavid.

She ruled Geffen out definitely. Went out of her way to say it was "Ovid" and said there is no V in the man's name and is definitely not a David. "Ovid" is just another clue.

See above. That myth was busted much earlier in this thread.

In my mind, it will always be about Warren Beatty. It just seems to fit him to a T! We'll probably never know for sure, but it's fun to guess. I don't think Carly's ever going to tell who it's about publicly, and I think she has fun with it. I would!

It doesn't sound like David. My theory it sounds like Warren Beatty. Because of the middle of the song.

If you go back through the thread you can read all of the clues. She says it's a composite of three people, but I get the feeling it's mainly about one. She has said that it's a little bit about Warren Beatty and I think he's one of the three. He is vain enough to think the song is about him. He called Carly and thanked her for the song after it was released. :giggle:

Thx. So, the clue can still be "oh vid" or "au vid" , 0..as in zero..vid, oh vido, yah? As she only enunciated it..right...? So we are here to sleuth it out  Ahhh, if only all problems were this fun to work out.
