A SILENT tear from Zahra Baker's best friend summed up the heartbreak felt by the Giru community at the schoolgirl's death.

"I wish she was still here, but I know she's gone to a better place."

An emotional David, the younger brother of Zahra's father Adam Baker, addressed the vigil crowd last night, describing his niece as "a special little person".

"She let nothing in life beat her or stop her," he told the crowd as he choked back tears.

Speaking to the Bulletin before the vigil, David said his family had been torn apart emotionally by the tragedy, but they had spoken with his devastated mother, Zahra's grandmother Karen, yesterday to offer their love and support."

LENOIR, N.C. – There’s news information in the Zahra Baker murder case. Court documents obtained by News 14 Carolina indicate Elisa Baker was married to two men at the same time.

The civil court papers filed in Caldwell County show Elisa Baker and her exhusband Aaron Young officially divorced Aug. 21, 2009. Young told News 14 Carolina that Elisa Baker said she filed for divorce in Australia but he filed in Caldwell County because he didn’t believe her.

Several sources confirm Elisa Baker and Adam Baker married in Australia in July 2008, including Adam Baker’s mother with whom they lived in Australia.

It’s a Class I Felony in North Carolina to commit bigamy. District Attorney Jay Gaither would not discuss the possibility of filing charges for bigamy. Hickory Police investigators are aware of the timeline.

Because I do not know what else to do with this:

and this -

The state issued court document assigning the attorneys reads "The Court having determined that the defendant is indigent and has been charged with first-degree murder (or an undesignated degree of murder)..."
Defense Attorney Lisa Dubs said she was appointed to protect the rights of Elisa Baker while she is being questioned in a homicide investigation after already having been charged with Obstruction of Justice in that same investigation.

Some of the teddy bears, dolls and toys at the Zahra Baker shrine have been removed — at the request of Zahra’s biological mother, Emily Dietrich.
The shrine began when Zahra was reported missing Oct. 9. It grew exponentially following Friday’s police announcement that Zahra’s remains have been found and the 10-year-old girl is dead.
Dietrich came to Hickory and spent a lot of time at the shrine before she left Sunday. As she prepared to return to Australia, she asked the Hickory couple she’d stayed with to donate some of the toys to the Hickory Police Department’s Cops for Tots Christmas program.

Bakers don't appear in court for hearing

"LENOIR -- Neither the father nor stepmother of Zahra Baker was in court Thursday morning for scheduled appearances on misdemeanor charges unrelated to the death of the young girl.

Adam Baker, Zahra's father, and Elisa Baker, the girl's stepmother, were represented instead by attorneys.

District Court Judge Gregory Hayes continued their cases on bad check and other charges."

Elisa was arrested on more than a dozen charges on nine outstanding arrest warrants on Oct. 9 – the day after Zahra was reported missing. On Oct. 12, she was charged with obstruction of justice after she admitted to writing a fake ransom note demanding $1 million. Later that day, Chief Tom Adkins of the Hickory Police Department announced that the Amber Alert for Zahra had been cancelled and the investigation was being handled as a homicide case.

Elisa Baker is being held on a $97,000 bond
