Wagga relatives mourn Zahra Baker

“The family of Zahra Baker is mourning the loss of a child they never got the chance to know, says her aunty, Nicole Dawson.

Ms Dawson is the sister of Zahra’s mother, Emily Dietrich, and said the family could only piece together fragments of the girl’s life from media reports after police identified her remains in the US.

Zahra has grandparents, aunties, uncles and cousins in the Wagga area who are dealing with the loss in different ways.

The Baker couple did not appear in Caldwell County court on Thursday and their cases were continued to Jan. 27, 2011. They were both given attorneys for the various charges, which include communicating threats.

Adam Baker, the biological father of Zahra, already had a lawyer, but that attorney had a conflict in the case, so on Thursday he was appointed a different one for these allegations.

WSOCtv just aired the Baker house in Hickory had been vandalized. Windows broken out.

They continued to interview a former neighbor when AB and EB lived in Sawmills. He stated AY lived right across the street from AB and EB and always told him they were brother and sister. AB attorney would not comment on the possible bigamy.

"Adam and Elisa Baker, the father and stepmother of Zahra Baker, may have been married before Elisa Baker's divorce from her previous husband was final, which could make their Australian marriage invalid."

"Records that WBTV has obtained indicate that Elisa Baker, 42, who was married at least three times in the past, had her divorce finalized in August of 2009."

Aaron Young was granted a divorce from Elisa on Aug. 21, 2009 – 13 months after her Australian wedding – and Young used her new last name, Baker, in the filing. Young filed for divorce on June 28, 2009, using her last name as Baker.

Young and Elisa were married on Aug. 8, 1998 in Cherokee, S.C., according to court documents. The cause given for the divorce was that the couple had not lived together as man and wife since May 29, 2008.

“She told us Aaron was her brother,” said Bobby Green who lived in the trailer next door to the Bakers. “They (Adam and Elisa) were up there quite a bit – like they were a regular family.”

A smile hid little Zahra Baker's pain

IT took Zahra Baker to die, it seems, before she was ever truly loved. That is not her failure, but ours.
Here was a young girl born to misery. Indeed, when you read the increasing news reports, you wonder if there was a day in her life when she was ever free from pain, ever truly happy. Born to a mum who gave her away, she died under a father who has to declare he did not dismember her body.

Snip:

"In Hickory everyone reckons they know who killed Zahra Baker as the mood in the deeply recessed North Carolina town swings between commemoration of the Australian girl's brief life and condemnation of those responsible for her death."

"But Hickory's deputy police chief, Major Clyde Deal, cautions against a rush to judgment, adding that police may not be ready to present the findings of their homicide investigation for some weeks.

"People assume they know what's happened," he says. "[But] there is absolutely no good reason for rushing this thing and then putting together a product that's going to allow a guilty person to walk."

More bad check charges had him there

Snip:

"A crowd of about 10 TV and print journalists shoved their cameras at the Bakers, asking questions about his daughter Zahra Baker’s death and dismemberment, which the pair refused to answer. The reporters followed the Bakers as they shuffled from one end of the courthouse lobby to the other while they waited for the courtroom doors to be unlocked."

“No comment, please get out of the way. No comment, please get out of the way. … We have no comments to make at all,” was all Karen Baker would say.
Adam remained silent."

US anger grows over killed little Aussie

Snipped:

"The area's top prosecutor is defending the pace of his investigation. In fact, similar cases have been notoriously difficult to prosecute and rushing into charges unsupported by evidence could be more disastrous than waiting."

"Once we have a complete picture of the events surrounding Zahra's disappearance and her death, we will meet with law enforcement to determine what, if any, charges are required," District Attorney James Gaither Jr wrote in an email in response to questions from The Associated Press."

Published: November 20, 2010

Hickory-- Elisa Baker’s legal team — attorneys Scott Reilly and Lisa Dubs and private investigator Steve Ehlers — were spotted walking out of the front doors of the Hickory Police Department at 1 p.m. Friday. They would not answer any questions about Baker, the case or why they were at the police department. They crossed the parking lot, got into a black Lexus and Dubs drove away.
