The District Attorney’s Office filed a motion to keep the documents from becoming public just as they were about to be unsealed. Unsealing the warrants would undermine or jeopardize the state’s right to prosecute a defendant, the motion claimed.

A total of 11 search warrants in the case are sealed. Several are related to searches done at the Bakers’ Hickory home, which was left with holes in the walls, floors and ceilings after investigators scoured it for evidence. Other warrants involved information from the Facebook and MySpace accounts of Zahra Baker’s stepmother, Elisa Baker.

"The Baker family will throw open the doors of the memorial service to the public, saying they understand that others need closure too - everyone who helped look for Zahra over that agonising five-week period, the police investigators, emergency workers, her school mates, close friends and neighbours, and complete strangers whose lives were touched by her story.

Her grieving father and grandmother will be in the front pew of the church service to be held at the Drum Funeral Home in Hickory before the Reverend Larry Cooley, saying this time they refuse to be cowed by public vilification into not attending the memorial to Zahra's life."

Warrants at issue in Zahra Baker case

Prosecutors go to court to keep documents under seal; media outlets seek access.

Prosecutors on Monday sought to keep secret a dozen search warrants in the investigation into the disappearance and possible death of 10-year-old Zahra Baker.

The warrants are public records but were placed under seal by judges in early October. Typically, such warrants spell out what evidence investigators are looking for during a search and also include an inventory of items seized.

In a motion Monday in Catawba County, prosecutors asked the court to extend its seal of the warrants and other documents related to their investigation of Zahra's disappearance.

Search warrants in Zahra Baker released

"NEWTON, N.C. – Search warrants in the Zahra Baker were released Tuesday. They were initially sealed for the investigation but could be made public, according to attorneys representing News 14 Carolina and other media outlets. About a dozen search warrants issued by the hickory police department were sealed but a judge issued an order to make the documents public. "

Eyewitness News reporter Dave Faherty is going through the documents, which are hundreds of pages long, now.

There are a total of 11 search warrants in the case. Several are related to searches done at the Bakers’ Hickory home, which was left with holes in the walls, floors and ceilings after investigators scoured it for evidence. Other warrants involved information from the Facebook and MySpace accounts of Zahra Baker’s stepmother, Elisa Baker.

Documents reveal new possible suspects in rape and killing of Zahra Baker.

Ten-year-old Zahra Baker may have been raped before she was murdered, and her dismembered body then concealed in a bed comforter and car cover, and discarded in a Dumpster behind a grocery store, according to court documents released this afternoon.

The documents don't reveal how the girl died, but they suggest that acquaintances of Zahra's stepmother may have played a role in the girl's death. The records detail for the first time Elisa Baker's account of what was done with Zahra's body, and offer a glimpse of evidence police have uncovered.

In a statement to police, a source relays information that two men may have raped Zahra. When asked if they killed her, the source said "they might have hit her in the head." :furious:

Warrants: Two men may have been involved in Zahra's death

"In a statement to police, a source wrote that he had third-hand information that a man named "Sammy" ... "had done something very bad and needed to leave town." Police searched the home of Timothy Samuel "Sammy" Young and Lewis James Young, at 8630 County Line Road in Hilebran, looking for evidence of firearms, bodily fluids and indications that Zahra had been there."

Grim details in Zahra's death

"Hickory Police declined to say late Tuesday whether they are investigating the two men as suspects in the killing and alleged rape of Zahra.

"We are not offering any additional comments on what was released in the court documents," said Deputy Chief of Police Clyde Deal. "We will file the charges whenever all the evidence work and the rest of the investigation reaches the proper point."

Also on Tuesday, the State Bureau of Investigation's crime lab released a report to Hickory Police on evidence it was sent to analyze, a spokeswoman said. She would not divulge details about the analysis."

"The shocking news devastated Adam and Karen, who had to hear the horrific news on the US evening news on Tuesday night.

Mrs Baker, who flew to North Carolina last month to be by Adam's side while the search continued for Zahra, cried on the phone yesterday as she tried to come to grips with the thought that her beloved granddaughter could have suffered even more before her brutal death.

``We had no idea that police were even investigating this possibility,'' Mrs Baker sobbed.

``It can't get any more horrific than this, surely ...

``The warrants apparently said that Zahra had been taken to a particular house a few days before Elisa reported her missing, and that she was sexually assaulted by two men.

``Adam just went white as a ghost and collapsed when he heard on the news ... he can't take much more.''

"Team Adam" helps in search for Zahra Baker clues

""We have among our Team Adam...perhaps the foremost expert in the country on landfill searches and certainly that was one of the steps that we assisted, aided, the Hickory Police in their search for Zahra," said Ernie Allen, President of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

For the past six years, Team Adam has assisted the country's 18,000 law enforcement agencies with cases involving children.

Beyond the landfill search, evidence in this investigation has been located in many sites. According to the search warrants, Elisa Baker provided the information that led police in the right direction but their searches covered three counties and multiple sites.

"Our goal is to bring the child home. And failing that in cases like Zahra, we hope to help law enforcement develop the necessary information so that they can bring the perpetrator to justice," said Allen."
