Public invited to sign guest book, see memorial tribute for Zahra Thursday

(snipped)

"Visitors who come to sign the guest book will have two to sign — one that will be given to Zahra’s father, Adam, and one that will be given to Zahra’s mother in Australia, Emily Dietrich. To the left of the guest books is a photo of Zahra, larger than life, impishly grinning at the camera while holding up a snake in her hands.

Visitors will also get to watch a video montage, photos from Zahra’s life that the family has put together, said Loretta Kuhn, with Drum Funeral Home. The slideshow is played to “Stuck on You,” by Elvis Presley and “Flew up to Heaven” by Alan Jackson."

Agreement: No Death Penalty, Life In Prison For Elisa Baker

"HICKORY, N.C. -- Elisa Baker, Zahra Baker’s stepmother, will not face the death penalty or life in prison if she’s convicted in the case under an agreement struck with the district attorney, Eyewitness News has learned."

"A written agreement between Elisa Baker and prosecutors takes the death penalty and life in prison off the table in the case, sources have confirmed to Channel 9. Elisa Baker’s attorney helped her reach the agreement, which calls for her continuing cooperation in the investigation, weeks ago, at a time when investigators were desperately looking for evidence in the case."

The DA is not commenting on the terms of that deal but another source tells WBTV that prosecutors agreed to take the death penalty and life in prison off the table, if she would provide investigators with information about the little girl's whereabouts.

Prosecutor: Death penalty still on the table in Zahra case

HICKORY, N.C.-- The prosecutor involved in the Zahra Baker case has indicated that the death penalty and first-degree murder charges are not off the table as possible punishments if the Hickory girl is found to have been murdered.

"We're under no obligation not to pursue capital murder charges or first-degree murder charges against any individual if there is sufficient and credible evidence to prove that Zahra Baker was murdered by that individual," District Attorney James Gaither Jr. told the Observer on Saturday.

Zahra Baker's real mother details painful trip to Hickory

Posted on December 5, 2010 at 11:43 PM

CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- More than three weeks after she visited Hickory to meet police investigating her daughter’s death, Zahra Baker’s biological mother has shared her personal account of the trip.

Emily Dietrich gave the four-day journal entry to News 7 Australia, the TV network that accompanied her to the U.S., and stayed by her side during her most emotional moments.

Dietrich has said she gave up Zahra while suffering from post-partum depression, then spent many of the following years trying to reunite with her daughter. She had only discovered Zahra’s whereabouts in Hickory three days before she was reported missing.

Dietrich starts by writing about how nervous she is about the trip that will bring her closer to her daughter, whom she hadn’t seen since the little girl was a toddler.

Emily's pilgrimage

By Robert Ovadia
December 1st, 2010, 4:22 pm

Covering the tragic case of Zahra Baker for 7News I travelled to the United States with her mother Emily Dietrich. Here is her emotional account of the pilgrimage to find answers following the mystery of her daughter's death.

Wednesday

Today was full of travel, maybe a little too much for a newbie in the world of international travel. After having already spent time with reporter Robert Ovadia and cameraman Paul Walker, I had very little nerves about going on this emotional journey with them. I had a mid morning flight from Wagga to Sydney, then met up with Rob and Paul for the long flight to San Francisco. The flight itself was fantastic, I handled the long hours in a confined space much better than I expected, except for the inevitable time to think. From the minute I had turned the corner toward the airport in Wagga I had butterflies in my stomach because of the unknown I was heading into.

I suddenly wasn’t sure whether I really was strong enough to face the end of my years of searching. Not sure I was ready to face the few answers I may find, which would surely just have me asking more questions. The leg from Sydney to San Francisco was not too bad, until I had to make it through customs. To my complete shock I was sent to a "secondary interview" area because my reason for being in the country was too far-fetched and unbelievable.

(I know this is loosely related but I have posted this here because IMO - all of the tears ever shed for Zahra ended up at this specific place and time for a reason). Hoping the MODS will allow this to remain as this case has brought Oz and the US a little closer.

"MORE than 3000 people remained isolated by floods last night as a second storm front prepared to unleash yet another torrential downpour across the state.

Residents in the central NSW town of Wagga Wagga were advised to prepare for the possibility of more flooding later this week, with falls of between 80mm and 140mm expected to hit the region tomorrow night.

The SES has deployed more than 150,000 sandbags across the flood-ravaged region with extra bags and sand being trucked in from Wollongong and Albury as the local supplies were exhausted."

"Prosecutors said Monday they had not agreed to take the death penalty off the table in the Zahra Clare Baker case. According to court documents, the Australian-born girl was killed and her body was likely dismembered in the bathtub of her family's home in Hickory, N.C. The 10-year-old girl, who had lost a leg to bone cancer and was hearing-impaired, was reported missing Oct. 9. On Nov. 12, police confirmed they had found her remains."

District Attorney Jay Gaither’s office Tuesday released a response to the reported agreement that limits the prosecution to charging second-degree murder against Elisa Baker.

According to a news story by WSOC-TV that was reported in Saturday’s Record, a written agreement stipulates that Elisa Baker will not face the death penalty or life in prison if she continues to cooperate with investigators as they seek answers in the death and dismemberment of Baker’s 10-year-old stepdaughter Zahra Baker.
