Zahra Baker MEDIA links only **NO DISCUSSION**

HICKORY More than three months have passed since Zahra Baker was reported missing. Although police found her body in pieces, no one has been charged in the 10-year-old's death.

The delay worries those who want someone held accountable.

They fear the lack of criminal charges signals problems with the case. And the bizarre circumstances surrounding the girl's death have led some friends, family, even area prosecutors to wonder: Can there be justice for Zahra?

"Everyone is frustrated," says Hickory Mayor Rudy Wright, who has plastered a large photo of Zahra on his business along Fairgrove Church Road. "This little girl struck a chord with all of us. ... People want somebody charged."

Catawba County's District Attorney James Gaither Jr. won't discuss the case - or explain why so much time has passed without charges in the death. Experts say he is probably awaiting a complete accounting of evidence from police and medical examiners before deciding what charges he can prove.

Last week, Hickory police turned over the majority of their investigation to the D.A. Zahra's autopsy is not yet complete, but the file is stuffed with recorded interviews, reports and detailed backgrounds on Zahra, her parents and other relatives.

"I've been doing this 26 years, and I've never seen a case file this big," says Hickory police Major Clyde Deal. "That poor little girl went through things that no 10-year-old should go through."

NEWTON, NC (WBTV) – The stepmother of Zahra Baker remains behind jail in Catawba County, but that could change this spring if no new charges are filed against her.

Baker was arrested on October 10 and faces various traffic and other misdemeanor charges that usually do not result in active jail time.

She does face felony charges of Bigamy and Obstruction of Justice for writing a fake ransom note but it is rare for someone to serve jail time for Bigamy. As for Obstruction of Justice, the presumptive sentence, according to court papers, would be in the 6 to 8 month range, if she is convicted.

By the time her next court date arrives in April, Baker will have already spent six months behind bars awaiting trial.

Dismembered NC girl's stepmom led a troubled life

HICKORY, N.C. (AP) - Elisa Baker had an uncanny ability to stay ahead of bill collectors, police, social workers and her multiple husbands, The Associated Press discovered in an investigation of the woman who led authorities to the dismembered remains of her disabled, 10-year-old stepdaughter.

Few saw her pattern because when she abandoned a relationship, she usually severed all ties. In seven years, she had no fewer than 42 different addresses. During a different three-year stretch, she was married to three men at the same time.

Work Completed On Permanent Zahra Memorial

Work on a permanent memorial for Zahra Baker, whose dismembered remains were found in Caldwell County, was finished Thursday.

The memorial is on Christie Road, near where police found Zahra’s prosthetic leg and some of her remains in the fall. The 10-year-old girl wore the prosthetic leg because she lost her own to cancer.

Autopsy not complete in Zahra Baker case

The medical examiner’s office is still searching for answers in the Zahra Baker case. No supplemental document listing Zahra’s cause of death has been submitted to Catawba County Register of Deeds.

Physician’s Assistant Eddie Pippen, a medical examiner employed by Piedmont Pathology, signed Zahra’s death certificate on Jan. 21. On it he listed her cause of death as “Pending.”

He explained that Zahra’s autopsy is being performed in Chapel Hill, and no cause of death will be recorded until it is complete.

Gaither starts justice walk for Zahra

"When will charges be filed in the death of Zahra Baker? That’s the question that has been asked since the 10-year-old girl’s death was confirmed in mid-November and one that continues to be posed now, four months after she was first reported missing.
The decision to pursue charges is up to 25th Prosecutorial District Attorney Jay Gaither. The DA’s Office received the prosecution summary from Hickory Police Department in December, and the case file was turned over to Gaither’s office Jan. 26.
“We are awaiting their decision when they would like for us to appear before a grand jury,” HPD Maj. Clyde Deal said. “The meat of what they need is with them.”

Portion of park to be dedicated to Zahra

The story of Zahra Baker touched the lives of many people in Catawba County. Hickory and the Kiwanis clubs of Catawba County are hoping the love people have for Zahra will help hundreds of other children in the addition of a park for children of all abilities.

The two have partnered to add on to Kiwanis Park on Sixth Street, SE, with play equipment that Zahra would have been able to enjoy. The park currently has a slide, swings, teeter-totter, baseball fields and other equipment, but nothing for children with disabilities.

“We have some of the finest community leaders,” said Rudy Wright, mayor of Hickory. “There’s no one here that wasn’t touched in some way by Zahra. We want to honor her here for special needs children.”

The body of a little Australian girl is found dumped in the backblocks of America. Her dad has some suspicious holes in his memory. Her stepmother has been locked up, but so far hasn’t been charged with murder. So what happened to ten-year-old Zahra Baker? It’s a crime that’s horrified and fascinated people on both sides of the Pacific. On Sunday night, for the first time, Zahra’s dad tells his version of events.
