From my understanding, radio and TV towers are taller than cell phone towers, and are therefore painted the red and white colors so that they may be easily identified by planes flying overhead. I believe this is a radio/tv tower.

No if you look this up online under NC Cell towers it lists the one near christie rd under Hudson NC.

Yes, it appears that what yo are seeing is a manhole, according to the County GIS system. I have attached the GIS data for that area, that shows the sewage lines in Orange/Brown (can't tell which). I'm not sure if there is a manhole at each turn, or where they put them, but it gives you an idea of where the sewers run in that particular trailer court.

ETA: I'm wondering if the "holler" or hollow, is where the lines make an X behind the trailer at the bottom of Phillip Lane? The exact location of that manhole could be closer to the trees, thus being referred to as in the "hollow?"

Okay, so this is the location referred to as the Sawmills location. I can't find a street view, and from this pic I can't see any mailboxes, but it fits the description of the former address where Z was forced to walk up hill.

I think you may be onto something! If you are referring to the house that is on the Northeast corner of Phillip and Marietta Lanes - in the backyard where the 2 intersecting orange lines appears to be where these two lines cross - it makes sense to me that access to this area would be appropriate (but I am no sewer expert). It does appear to have an elevation line right there in the backyard as there looks to be a dip down that continues to the house across the street to the south. I haven't found a street view yet.

Just putting this out there as I've been watching this thread since the beginning and quite honestly there are several places she could be but this area caught my attention while looking for ponds. It's a dirt road off of Christy that could be traveled unnoticed to what looks like a 4-wheeler area and woods with a ravine, a few woods to look at along the way. Dirt wheel tracks show access into this area. FWIW

YEP! Any of this dirt roads would be secluded , no lighting and if they go to another road then less noticable to those few houses at the begining of them. People think they are just passing through.

I'm not doubting that there may also be a cell tower nearby, but the red and white tower is, imo, a radio tower.

Either way, I suppose it doesn't really matter, for our purposes here in this discussion. I'm content to let those who want to persue cellphone ping ideas fight this out amongst themselves. :)

locals, any pressers scheduled? search again (with dogs)?? is weather good?

Weather is cold and windy here. No rain, bright sun about 40-50 degrees. i had heasrd helicopters every day last week but none so far today so nothing has been told to the media Im assuming since they aren't out and about, although now that I just really thought about the weather it would most definetly be too windy for them to be out. ...so ... if I hear anything locally about searches will definetly post.

The address is 4010 Phillips Ln listed as a previous address (noted as the Hollars) on the map Writer7 referred to.

Am I seeing a "manhole" at the address next door - right where the dark asphalt meets the lighter concrete parking area?

What is a "holler"?

I have been looking around @ different properties in this area - I am not finding any more "manholes" yet, but I am curious - do they put manhole covers in people's yards in NC? the only manhole covers that I know of would be to gain access under the streets - so I am assuming it is right in front of this person's yard.

I'm a litttle confused. There are septic tanks in the area as well, not all are on city sewer. The link does not clarify for me which is which. Can someone confirm?

ETA: a 'holler' is a small low lying geographical area usually between two higher areas. It's common vernacular in certain populations especially in the South and midwest.

Lol, I was thinking it was kinda warm today, especially in the sun! It is definately breezy.

Thanks Oriah, one more photo for you showing the topographical landscape of the previous pic, kinda surprised me a bit. The woods beyond the unknown road marker are in a horseshoe valley of some type. It looks like the dirt roads run the upper trail.

Thanks Peli- I am very interested in 'loops'. Especially the dirt ones where there is heavy foliage in the center of the 'U' loop. Not necessarily referring to this pic, but loops in general with dense foliage that would conceal a vehicle at the height of the U from a main road if you kwim?

Yes, this is the trailer that was pictured last week in an article, that showed the mailboxes.

I'm also wondering about the trees that are along the main road (Helena). There is a "T" made by the sewage lines behind the parcel/trailer marked 2105. There seems to be trees, and a drop off, that could be considered a "hollow."

A "holler" is how we hillbillies say "hollow". ;)

It's a valley, of sorts, a low flat area between two or more hills.

ETA: I see a Phillips-Hall Ln. in Hudson...no streetview, though.

And quite often the "holler" is just "over yonder".

I concur. Now, do we know if this was the last known address prior to the move to 21st Ave.?

Looking at obvious loops, I'd be looking at the loop from Deal Mill to Pine Mountain to Christie and then back to Deal Mill. If the Phillips Ln. location is near Helena, getting to this loop would be a fairly straight shot from Mission rd. to Deal Mill.

Upon further inspection, it appears there may be manhole covers (or something light colored) near each light pole in the yards on Phillip Lanes and the street (Marietta I think is the name) that hooks up to Helena Street. The house on the corner (4028?) Phillip Lane appears to have a light pole and one of those lighter colored things as well. Could this be the area the neighbors are complaining of the smell in the "holler". (ha, where I come from that statement sounds like someone yelling who has bad breath)

And quite often the "holler" is just "over yonder".

I also heard a local explain that the holler the neighbor witness on news interviews was referring to was actually the space beneath the trailers that is wrapped in an aluminum skirting.

My folks in Waycross GA use the term holler as you've described it and yep, it's usually over yonder ;)

There is an area like you describe back there but if you're in touch with someone I'd have them do google earth flyovers to identify the dirt roads, there are a few away from any main roads that connect to Christy. At the top of one U curve with cover it appears someone had been cutting trees at one time, trees on the ground. Actually, I'd scout the area with 4 wheelers to determine if further searching need done. JMO

Can do better than a google flyover. Thanks much.

No address, only land. Let's see, I've posted pics off of Christy Rd, the main dirt road leads off Christy Rd, north of where they were searching, then west.

Coordinates

35°51'21.70"N
81°26'59.28"W

See if that helps.
