Manalo took cell phone pics of #zimmerman's head not long after incident.

Showing picture he agreed he took with his own flashlight, of Trayvon's body lying on stomach with hands underneath. He saw no movement and did not hear him say anything.

He saw GZ also and asked him if he had called 911, he said no. He did not appear 'out of it', was on phone.

Kyle Hightower ‏@khightower 2m
Martin's parents Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton both peered at photo of #trayvonmartin face down taken my Manalo.

Kyle Hightower ‏@khightower 51s
Manalo says he was the first person to encounter #Zimmerman after the shooting. Says he didn't look like he was "out of it."

GZ thru his phone down and asked him to call his wife...he picked the phone up and put it in GZs left pocket (because it was closer), and then called his wife.

When he started to tell her what happened, GZ interrupted and told him, just tell her I shot someone.

He remained outside when officers arrived, first one turned TM over and he went and got the Walmart bag and watched officer attempt to save TM.

Did not know TM or GZ, not involved in NW program at all, he works.

Did GZ appear to be in shock, no, he was coherent and responded to questions.

Kyle Hightower ‏@khightower 5m
Manalo says that #zimmerman appeared calm after shooting. State is done questioning. Don West is beginning his cross examination.

FRIDAY JUNE 28, 2013

12:58 PM

Court camera showing the Defense with George entering the courtroom.

12:59 PM

Judge enters and calls court back in session.

Pause while attorneys prepare some things.

1:02 PM

Judge asks for the Jury to enter.

Mr Rianda call your next witness

Witness: Jonathan Manalo Married 7 years, works for UPS, has lived in the County for about 32 years. Lived at 2861 Retreat View Circle. Had lived there about 3 years.

What was everyone doing that night?

Around 7:10 PM or so did you hear something outside? Yes. I heard 'grunts' and something like dogs barking. Wife looked out through window. He told her to get away from the window. He himself never looked out the window. She told him she saw two people fighting. Again, he himself never looked through the sliding glass door to the outside. After the gunshot, he went through the garage to go outside. He grabbed a flashlight along the way. When he got out he saw a man standing. At the time, he did not recognize the man.

When he first saw him, the man walked directly towards Manalo. Manalo saw that he had his left hand to his ear, holding his cellphone. Saw blood streaming down his nostrils, his lips.

Manalo took a photo of the back of George's head. He also took a photo of a flashlight that was beside the body. He used the flashlight to illuminate for his photos he took with his cell phone.

Bernie has him identify where on the aerial photo he encountered or came into contact with George. (It was at the T, near the dog trash receptacle).

Was he the first person out there? Yes. Police arrived subsequent to his being out there.

Bernie uses several photos to identify the location of where Manalo lived and where he encountered George at the T.

He took a picture of Mr Martin's body (from the sidewalk). Light is from Manalo's flashlight. He also took a picture of an object (a flashlight) laying next to the body.

Was the flashlight you saw on the ground, illuminated? No.

Trayvon's hands were under his torso.

To George, "do I need to call 911?" G: No, I just got off the phone with them. Manalo did not see a gun at that time.
When he found out George had a gun, Manalo asked him what caliber he used.
When police arrived, the officer said he was going to handcuff George. George through his cell phone on the ground and asked Manalo to call G's wife.

He says G put his right arm up, and showed or told the officer that he had a gun (inside a waistband holster) (this was before the handcuffs)

Manalo picked up G's cellphone and put it in G's left side pocket. George gave Manalo his wife's number, Manalo called the wife to tell her her wife had been involved in a shooting and he was being taken to the Sanford Police Department. George interjects to say, "just tell her I shot someone".

Upon hearing shot, how long to get outside and come in contact with George. He remained outside when and after officers arrived.

He saw officer turn body over, he and wife provided a bag for officer to perform CPR.

Says, George did not appear to be in shock. He acted just like any other person, he appeared calm. He never saw G look back at the body.

Bernie done.

West to question Manalo

West: you had a flashlight, and you had your cellphone. It took about 20 seconds to get to the area outside where you saw something?

West is suggesting to Manalo that he wasn't afraid of George? West discombobulating George's call to the police. Suggesting that the call had just entered.

West, he squatted down "as if trying to collect himself". Emphasis on 'trying to collect himself as if he had just gotten his butt beat" - West.

West goes looking for big picture Manalo took of back of George's head.

West says, Manalo says, George says: "I was defending myself".

The first officer (Smith) comes with a flashlight, Manalo not so aware of officer flashlight. West goes through what Manalo had said about officer, handcuffs, George and calling George's wife.
About the call to the wife.

West is trying to get Manalo to say what George was thinking. Objection.

You thought that the way that Mr Z said that, that he wasn't in shock. He was pointed, he was compliant, he was just kind of 'flat'. Right. Of course you are not and expert in shock? Right.

Now on to Neighborhood Watch topic. Manalo not involved in it and didn't know what was going on in the community specifically with Neighborhood Watch.

Now, #77 about the photos Manalo took, specifically of Trayvon's body. West pointing out the position of Trayvon's left knee?

Now, #78 photo of the flashlight near the body. West continues to emphasize how dark it was.

West saying: Manalo was on sidewalk where he had encountered George, up near the 'T', when he took the photos of Trayvon's body and the flashlight. From near the 'T' but far enough down the sidewalk. Now West is trying to emphasis how close the flashlight and body are from the sidewalk and back patio area of that residence.

West says, whatever is in the picture (of the body) is what you saw? Yes.

RE-DIRECT.

Bernie: Mr Manalo, when you first encountered George, he was calm, correct? West objects.

How would you describe George's demeanor? Calm. He was staggering a little. Had no problem understanding him when he spoke.

Did you see the shooting of when George shot Trayvon in the chest? No.

Thank you.

WEST IS BACK.

OOPS, NO MORE. Mr Manalo is excused.

Witness:

Ricardo Ayala Police Officer, Sanford Police Department

Responded to the scene of a shooting at Twin Lakes. Originally was responding to a suspicious person dispatch.

He says Officer Tim Smith was first officer on scene.

When he arrived he entered at front gate, went to the right and followed Retreat View Circle almost all the way around the entire complex until he ended up near the T / pathway area.

Body was face down, hands under the body. First officer to approach his body. He commanded the body to show its hands. There was no response. No movement, no sounds.
Sgt Raimondo approached and attempted to get a pulse. Ayala says he thinks he and Raimondo moved the body from stomach to back. He says he and Raimondo performed CPR on Trayvon.
Raimondo asked for the plastic bag. Someone supplied it, it was like a plastic grocery bag.
Saw no signs of life from Trayvon's body. He did chest compressions, Raimondo did mouth to mouth. Then emergency arrived and took over.

O'Mara:

Because 'shots fired': Ayala arrived second and saw Officer Tim Smith holding George at gunpoint? Yes.
He took out his weapon as well. His gun has a flashlight on it. In his report he said he was first protecting Officer Smith. As soon as Smith secured Zimmerman, he focused on Trayvon.

Was George compliant as far as you were aware? Yes. Did not see blood etc on George's nose.

O'Mara says it was so dark that you could not see Trayvon's body without your flashlight? Pretty much.

Done.

Prosecution, one question. Done

Next witness:

Stacy Livingston Sanford Fire Department 25 years, currently firefighter EMT

Retweeted by Kyle Hightower

Guy on direct...she found Trayvon on his back...did not do CPR..EMT was assessing his condition, put on cardiac machine? and no signs of life...checked pulse at carotid and none...saw the gunshot when pulled up his shirt, took the can out of his shirt (hoodie) pocket but not her job to transport evidence, ID'd the gunshot wound, witness ID's defendant, sitting in police car, no difficulty understanding her or responding, objection, sustained, judge tells jury to disregard "understanding, calls for speculation'....GZs score on test for alertness was highest, 15...injuries, very small injury to nose, not actively bleeding, still moist, on back of head had 2 lacerations, had been bleeding, EMTs tried to clean up to see what injuries were, he did stand up once, treated him for 5 min. but did not transport, it was determined if he needed further treatment, Sanford police would take care of it. Had no further involvement with GZ or case.

Stacy Livingston Sanford Fire Department 25 years, currently firefighter EMT

Were Sanford Police officers when you arrived. Yes, they were doing CPR. Body was on its back. Checked Trayvon for a pulse. No pulse. While evaluating, she moved clothing. She felt a can in the front of his sweatshirt. She moved it out and put it down to the right. Also felt a small crinkly sounding bag. She did not remove it. It wasn't in her way.
Saw a gunshot wound in his chest.
Put him on cardiac monitor. Lead Paramedic determined rythymn on machine was incompatible with life.
19:30 Trayvon pronounced dead.

Other than taking the can out, did you move anything else? No. Has her look at photos of the dead body, does that depict what you saw? Yes.

Made contact with the defendant, George. First saw him sitting in a police car.

Asking her about a "Glasco" ??? test ???

What is the most alert number someone can be? 15. What was George's response? 15.

Small bleeding nose, laceration injuries to back of head. Nose area was still moist but not actively bleeding. The injuries to back of head were not then actively bleeding. George seemed to stand up okay. Treated George for about 5 minutes. Did not transport George from scene. If he needed further treatment, the police would take him.

NOW, O'MARA:

When you first contacted George he was in patrol car? Yes.

He says you didn't actually do the evaluation on George, did you? Yes, I did. And, officer O'Rourke. O'Mara mentions some other guy.

Looking at picture of George in patrol car, she says, the bridge of his nose is very swollen. She seems to remember that there was more swelling that isn't depicted in photo.

Describe how a shock to the nose would cause bleeding like that. They are discussing swallowing your own blood.

O'Mara is bringing up the possibility of concussive injuries, brain injuries? Should people who received injuries like the nose, should one be concerned about that? Possibly.

What is normal procedure for brain injuries? They would have to go get an X-ray. The decision to transport was up to the individual, not to the emt's.

Was he able to stand? Door open, his feet were out. He said he had felt dizzy. So, they asked him to stand. West suggests that Tim Smith or another met helped him out of the car to stand up? She doesn't remember.

DONE

Prosecution

a couple of questions

Ms Livingston excused. Tim Smith coming up.

OM up to cross Livingstone

Asks her about condition of nose, was swollen, he had a small laceration to nose, she does not know how it happened, blood vessels in nose have to be broken, if laying on back, where would blood go, probably swallowed it. GZ sitting sideways in car, legs out, asked him to stand up to see if dizzy, he could stand up.

OM pointing out he could have had concussion or needed x-rays; they would be happy to transport but police would make decision (since he was in their custody).

She agrees her job was to evaluate patients condition.

State direct exam is done. O'Mara is up to cross examine Smith.

OM Asking what he saw at scene...saw TMs body and GZ there, asks about injuries, nose was still bleeding and eyes watering...he asked him what happened...he said he shot the person and was still armed...he took his gun out and held it on GZ, normal procedure, gun was exposed on the holster at his back when he leaned over, secured his gun, GZ was cooperative, got him to put hands on his head and handcuffed him, did not resist.

Asked it GZ seemed angry, frustrated, no

Had seen his injuries, did he seem agitated, no, was calm but not upbeat either , not cavalier or uncaring. Secured gun and had GZ walk over to police car, waited for paramedics to determine whether to transport of not, who made the decision not to transport, when he stood up did anybody help him up, still cuffed, maybe paramedics helped him up, he was released to police, GZ while in back seat of car and said he had a headache and was lightheaded, checked with HQ and was told if GZ wanted to go to hospital to take him there, discussed pictures taken after interviews at LE around midnight, cleaned up some by paramedics on scene and also given tissues and water to clean himself before these pictures.

MO up for cross now..shows her pictures from day before and asks her why/how the swelling goes down so quickly, is that normal? Objection, calls for speculation, overruled.

She say can happen as body works to heal itself and also depends on what medicines have been used.

Lacerations on head can bleed more than other parts of body due to number of vessels and no hair, according to physicians asst #Zimmerman

She says gravity pulls the blood down the body. Asks her to look at another picture of swelling, would it go down in the 12 hours before she saw GZ. What causes the swelling? some kind of trauma to area..

What is potential outcome of trauma like that? can develop into bleeding into brain...etc. He brings up subdural and hematoma...not caused by lacerations themselves..what if take that skull hit against cement, could that cause those injuries, could depend on how hard it was hit.

O'Mara asking Folgate about injuries she sees on #zimmerman's head from night of shooting.

He asks if these would cause a hematoma...difficult to determine...there is possible swelling and some bruises.

Would injuries to nose and back be consistent with being thrown on back and punched in nose? could be

The only way to determine a broken nose is an x-ray..did he discuss that he had would not go to specialist due to cost, high deductible? she does not remember that.

She also suggested a psychological evaluation; he was already seeing a psychologist and due to what he told her about his experience she would recommend that. He did not seem to be pretending his distress.

Black eyes can be more apparent at a later date after the swelling. This was consistent with what she saw. She found no significant injuries, was he trying to downplay so he could go back to work? she does not recall that being said or impressed on her. She did not feel his bandages were inappropriate..if you saw those wounds and if patient asked she would put a bandage over it, not have to be done. Not more injured because of GZs lack of hair, just more apparent. She did not ask if he had cut his hair.

Prosecution has made several speculation objections.
