Search for 2 missing Humboldt County women continues -

Two families have joined together to search for a pair of missing Humboldt County women who were last seen in Fortuna several months ago.

Rio Dell and Loleta resident Sheila Franks, 37, was last seen on Jan. 11 and was reported missing on March 13. Fortuna resident Danielle Bertolini, 23, has not been seen or heard from since Feb. 8. She was reported missing on Feb. 19. Both women have blonde hair and blue eyes. Franks' older sister and Alaska resident Melisa Walstrom is visiting the county this week to help with the investigation. Walstrom said the two women's families are working in an extremely close group, even bringing in dogs from K-9 Forensics in Edgewood, New Mexico, to help search.

As much as I hate to admit this, I don't think she, nor Danielle Brooks (Bertolini) are with us any longer. No updates, seemingly no leads coupled with the apparent company that they kept... such a sad set of circumstances. But I'll do my best to be negative by saying...I hope that I'm wrong about my thoughts in regards to whether they are alive.

I don't think the families of either woman have thought they are alive for quite awhile. I hope they can find their remains to bury and enough evidence to prosecute. I really admire the true grit and tenacity these families have shown. But they are up against a culture of fear and silence in the community that is like a wall they can't climb.

The remains are likely from someone who died within the first few months of this year.

As of this point, even the sex of the skeleton has not yet been confirmed so attempts to identify the individual could take some time. Right now, Horton said, the Coroner’s Office is gathering descriptions of people missing who may have been in the area in order to be prepared, hopefully, to match the description with the information about the remains that the anthropologist is able to provide.

Horton said family members of several missing persons have already been in touch with his office.

In Memory of Sheila and Danielle:

Melisa Walstrom is asking people to take a few moments on Saturday to remember two missing women: her sister Sheila Franks and Fortuna resident Danielle Brooks-Bertolini.

"July 19 at 10:14 a.m. is when (Sheila) was born. I'm asking for people to release a balloon in honor of Sheila then, or anytime during that day," Walstrom said. "I ask that people don't use mylar balloons, which can be bad for the environment, and instead of using string, people can use raffia. Even if people don't want to release a balloon, I ask that they take a few moments to pray for Sheila, Danielle Brooks-Bertolini and their families, and that we're able to find them and have closure."

A jawbone with very white teeth has been found in Southern Humboldt in Humboldt Redwoods State Park.
The campground where it was found was closed when Sheila and Danielle disappeared, but the road leading to the campground was open. It would have been possible to dump a body and not have it discovered until now (or ever).

A POI in Danielle and Sheila's disappearance was shot during a possible burglary. Charming fellow.

A suspected car burglar and person of interest in an ongoing missing persons case who was shot once in the leg on Monday after allegedly attacking a Eureka resident was not arrested after checking into a local hospital where a police detective was waiting for him, according to Eureka Police Detective Ron Harpham.

Harpham said the suspect, whom he would not name, checked himself into Redwood Memorial Hospital in Fortuna on Tuesday at about 7 p.m. and was questioned by a detective who was waiting there in case he showed up. When asked why the suspect was not arrested, Harpham said the case is still under investigation.

Harpham said the shot man is also tied to the missing persons cases of Sheila Franks and Fortuna resident Danielle Brooks-Bertolini.

According to authorities, Franks, 37, was last seen on Feb. 2 in Fortuna. Brooks-Bertolini, 23, was last seen on Feb. 8 and was reported missing on Feb. 19.

"The guy that is shot is an investigative lead in that sheriff's department, Fortuna investigation," he said. "I wouldn't say he was suspect. He is a person of interest."

Bumping for Sheila. Her sister has revealed on the FB page the name of the last person to see both Sheila (on Feb. 2) and Danielle Brooks (Bertolini) (Feb. 9). She claims that he married Sheila in November 2013 and has not helped search for her or post fliers. His name has not been released in the media, so it cannot be posted here, but we certainly can sleuth him and hold onto the information until he is named as a POI.

Sheila's sister also speaks of her anguish at cleaning out Sheila's two storage units and deciding what to discard and what to save. :anguish: I cannot begin to imagine what Sheila's sister and Danielle's mother are going through, but I admire their fearless tenacity advocating for these two missing women.

Missing: Jessica Neiman, Danielle Bertolini, Sheila Franks, Jeff Joseph

The article cited above gives chilling statistics that explain why families cannot just rely on LE to find their missing loved one. As frustrating as that fact is, Sheila's family has done their best to keep her case active. They should be very proud of themselves IMO.

Law enforcement is usually overwhelmed with cases and has little time to assist them. Here in Humboldt, the numbers of reports filed for missing adults is substantially higher per capita than for any other county in California. According to numbers provided by the Department of Justice (DOJ) for 2013, Humboldt County had 258 reports of missing persons per 100,000 population and San Francisco, its nearest competitor, had only 190 reports per 100,000. In total, DOJ reports that Humboldt had 347 reports for 2013—almost one per day. (Missing doesn’t necessarily mean that the individual has been harmed. They may be voluntarily out of contact with family and friends.)
