Still Missing CA - Aranda Briones, 16, missing after a night out with friends, Moreno Valley, 13 Jan 2019 *arrest*

It was a Settlement hearing for the drugs. Maybe they came to a conclusion on that one. But no... just looked at the jail site - that I CAN access - and it has this:
When either party files a PC 1050 Motion for continuance in a criminal matter, they are asking the Court to postpone the hearing and/or postpone the court date (i.e., where the defendant doesn't even get transported from jail to the courthouse).

IMO, it doesn't follow the defendant would be transported to the court for the contraband felony settlement conference (FSC) which in itself is just another term used to delay setting the preliminary hearing.

Hi guys. I’ve been following this case since the beginning. Thank you for the regular updates. It’s awful how slowly the wheels of justice turn.

Thank you. I was Owen’s teacher for a short time and I also taught Aranda’s uncle James. The drugs in jail are no surprise. I suspected Owen was selling in school, although I have no proof. He would often just get up and leave class and not return. I even had students come to my class and ask for him. Just weird. That boy was always emotionless. He’d pull some stunt in class, like turn on the safety shower and soak the floor. Sit calmly back down without any expression on his face. His eyes always seemed empty, but I could tell he was paying attention to everything going on around him. He very rarely spoke in class and he never did any work. I’d see Aranda walking around campus with him sometimes. She was even suspended from school for possession of a gun that Owen gave her. I think the reason she didn’t get expelled is because he brought it onto campus and gave it to her. He was always up to something. It’s sad that neither of them have given up the location of her body. That family has been through so much, even before this. It’s heartbreaking that there has been no resolution or peace for them.

With a change of Court (Dept 64), perhaps the tide will be changing in 2024....

@Niner -- although the court calendar reflects the case slated for Trial for both defendants on 3/7/24, I'm not confident this will happen based on what was reported for 11/17/23: There was supposed to be a Trial Readiness Conference on this date but one of the parties requested a continuance, and the TRC was disposed.

3/7/24

A man who aided his younger brother in trying to cover up the alleged killing of a 16-year-old Moreno Valley girl pleaded guilty today to being an accessory after the fact and was immediately sentenced to a year in jail.

Gary Anthony Shover, 27, of Hesperia admitted the felony count under a plea agreement with the Riverside County District Attorney's Office. Shover was originally charged with first-degree murder and a special-circumstance allegation of lying in wait, but after a 2022 preliminary hearing, a judge dismissed those counts, and the accessory charge was substituted for him alone.

In addition to a year in county jail, Superior Court Judge John Molloy ordered Shover to serve 12 months of probation and pay victim restitution, in an amount to be determined later by the Department of Probation.

The defendant's brother, 23-year-old Owen Skyler Shover, also of Hesperia, is charged with murder and the special-circumstance allegation of lying in wait for the alleged slaying of Aranda Briones in 2019.

He is being held without bail at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta, and trial proceedings for him are slated to begin on April 25 at the Riverside Hall of Justice.

I'm not finding Gary with the Riverside County inmate search or Vinelink so I take it that his 1 year punishment was credited with time served(?)..

For the first time since 2019, I believe Owen will finally stand trial in April!

Now that Gary took a plea deal on 3/7/24 and immediately sentenced, there should be no further delay with only Owen on the trial docket.

Or so I hope!
