Found Deceased CA - Blaze Bernstein, 19, Lake Forest, 2 Jan 2018 #8 *Arrest*

Jury selection and pretrial motions have been grinding on for weeks...but it appears jury selection could begin again next week, setting back testimony only about a couple of weeks.

Woodward had some sort of an outburst in court that prompted his attorney to motion for a mistrial, which was granted by Orange County Superior Court Judge Kimberly Menninger.

This is unreal. I don’t know what has taken so long.

NO!!!!!! Geez - talk about delays!! Thanks for the update!!

Trial expected to last several months?!? Get comfortable everyone!

The trial’s estimated length — several months — along with the international media attention surrounding the killing and expected testimony involving homophobia and racist material has complicated the jury-selection process.

On Tuesday, attorneys are expected to discuss whether to dismiss prospective jurors who are part of the larger jury pool for the trial but were not actually in the courtroom for the disruption. Starting jury selection from scratch would require a new pool of several hundred prospective jurors and further delay the trial’s start.

Several months?? It’s a pretty cut and dry case. Two individuals who were known to each other, albeit worlds apart in their respective lives.

I think one of the main things though that could be tricky is an alibi for SW. Hopefully there will be some digital proof of his whereabouts.

They have had a massive amount time to create their defense and I’m sure we will hear alot of bs.

Will be interesting to see how the defense tries to explain this away.

...a knife found in a drawer in Woodward’s bedroom had blood on the tip and handle that investigators matched through DNA to Bernstein. Investigators also described finding blood stains in Woodward’s vehicle that they matched to both Woodward and Bernstein.

Yes! And wow I just realized with the current tense climate of differing nationalities it will probably draw more attention to the case.

Blaze was Jewish through and through. His family is very involved in their Orthodox community in a number of ways. SW was part of that hateful gang that I believe is antisemitic and homophobic. I can’t remember the name at the moment but it’s dark.

Yikes, I hope that it makes it a disadvantage for SW.

2/27/24 Update: Attorneys will return to court Tuesday to discuss how to move forward with jury selection.
2/29/24 Update: Woodward had some sort of an outburst in court that prompted his attorney to motion for a mistrial, which was granted by Orange County Superior Court Judge Kimberly Menninger. Jury selection & pretrial motions have been grinding on for weeks, but it appears jury selection could begin again next week, setting back testimony only about a couple of weeks. Trial continues with re start of jury selection on 3/5/24 @ 9am. On Tuesday, attorneys are expected to discuss whether to dismiss prospective jurors who are part of the larger jury pool for the trial but were not actually in the courtroom for the disruption. Starting jury selection from scratch would require a new pool of several hundred prospective jurors 7 further delay the trial’s start.

Jury selection is starting over in the high-profile murder trial of Samuel Woodward...after Woodward’s courtroom outburst last week led to the dismissal of the previous jury pool.

Woodward will not be shackled in court despite the disturbance in front of the previous prospective jurors [the Judge] ruled on Tuesday. But dismissing all the previous prospective jurors and starting with a fresh jury pool is expected to delay the closely watched trial by at least two weeks, if not longer.
.
.
.
The new round of jury selection will begin with 100 prospective jurors to be brought in on Wednesday morning followed by another 100 in the afternoon. The jurors will be given a questionnaire to fill out asking about their backgrounds and hot-button issues expected to come up during the trial. The prospective jurors will then be required to return to the Santa Ana courtroom days later for questioning by the attorneys and the judge.
.
.
.
Woodward has Asperger syndrome...as well as issues with his own sexual identity, according to a defense attorney who once represented Woodward but who is no longer tied to the case.

All because of his outburst. I’m sure he is glad that his actions changed things.

In my opinion he should be in shackles, all the more reason to be. I’m surprised that he’s not going to be restrained. His lifestyle and background of violent gangs warrants it.

If he's not restrained he could continue creating a disturbance and cause another mistrial during jury selection. I wonder if he'll also ask to act as his own attorney and make a circus out of the trial.

Do we know what his outburst was?

No, and it sounds like we won't find out.

The judge...did not go into detail about the disruption Woodward caused, and those who were in the court at the time — including the previous potential jurors — were asked...not to discuss it with anyone else...

Woodward, who entered the courtroom with his long hair covering his face, appeared calm during Tuesday’s court proceedings. His defense attorney told the judge that Woodward hasn’t been feeling well.

“You had an outburst that was unexpected to say the least,”...the judge noted that it was the first time Woodward had been disruptive during more than five years of hearings. On the advice of her courtroom deputies, the judge said she didn’t think it was necessary to start shackling Woodward during court hearings.

But the judge warned Woodward that if any additional disruptions occurred, additional security measures could become necessary.
