Description:
  • Date of Birth: circa 1948
  • Age: 34 years old
  • Race: White/Caucasian
  • Gender: Male
  • Height: 6' 1" (73 Inches)
  • Weight: 190 lbs

  • Identifiers: Unknown
Circumstances of Disappearance:
Schafer disappeared from the Mount Baldy area in California on March 13, 1982. He was hiking in Ice Canyon above the 5,000-foot level of the mountain at the time. He failed to return as scheduled that evening for his birthday party and has never been heard from again. His vehicle was located in the Ice House Canyon Lodge parking lot.

Prior to his disappearance, Schafer had been planning a trip to Cucamonga Peak before going to the 10,064-foot Mount Baldy. He is an experienced hiker and has hiked in the San Gabriel Mountains since he was about eight years old. It is suspected that he may have hiked into the rugged mountain area right before a severe winter storm (dropping temperatures and severe winds with snow and rain) and possibly became trapped in the snow. An extensive search of the area was conducted but was halted due to extremely hazardous avalanche conditions. Schafer has never been located and his whereabouts remain unknown.

Investigators:
  • San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department: (909) 356-6411
    Reference Case#: 1138211
  • WeTip at 1-800-78CRIME (800-782-7463)
NCIC Case Number: Not available
