there is no human decency anymore

only cover ups

I couldn't agree less, beg your pardon for saying so. Oh, don't get me wrong, I love conspiracy theory, and theories, as much as the next poor fellow. JFK? Check. Bobby? Oh yes. Martin? Certainly. Or move back in time....Edward de Vere, Earl Oxford, as the real writer of the works attributed to Shakespeare? Hot-diggity!

But the cynical mind ultimately is self-defeating, imprisons itself, forges its own manacles. I believe in the ultimate goodness of human beings -- because otherwise this whole s**thouse would have exploded long ago.

I have been reading a lot about Columbine and I found out that there were at least 1000 people at the funerals for each of the victims. I don't recall any of the Newtown victims having a huge public memorial service...Weren't they all kept private? I thought it was an interesting contrast...Any guesses as to why?

We had an incident the other day at my school with a student threatening to shoot a teacher. It never stops... :(

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The school system unwittingly enabled Adam Lanza's mother to "accommodate and appease" him as he became more withdrawn socially, according to a state report issued Friday on the man who carried out the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The Office of the Child Advocate report identified missed opportunities to provide more appropriate treatment for Lanza, whose social isolation and obsession with mass killings have been detailed in police reports that concluded the motive for the shootings may never be known.

A thread running through the 114-page report, which refers to Lanza as "AL," is the effort on the part of his parents to accommodate his disabilities, rather than adhering to specialists' recommendations for extensive special education support.

"Both AL's mother and his educational team shared a goal of managing and accommodating, rather than securing treatment for, AL's disabilities, and likely this approach was fueled by a lack of critical information and guidance," the report said.

"Records indicate that the school system cared about AL's success but also unwittingly enabled Mrs. Lanza's preference to accommodate and appease AL through the educational plan's lack of attention to social-emotional support, failure to provide related services, and agreement to AL's plan of independent study and early graduation at age 17," the authors wrote.

Doctors at Yale offered Adam Lanza treatment for what they identified as profound emotional disabilities six years before he went to Sandy Hook Elementary and carried out a shooting that left 20 children and six adults dead.
His mother, Nancy Lanza, didn’t agree to the treatment.

It is just so sad that Adam had 'profound emotional disabilities' six years prior and she wouldn't do the treatment. I just never really thought he just snapped.

Another very good article

Nancy developed a preoccupation with her own health, telling friends in emails that she suffered from a potentially terminal disease and that she did not have long to live. She said she worried about the future of Adam and his older brother, Ryan.

But the authors, in investigating her medical records, found no evidence that Nancy was suffering from a terminal illness. The report suggests that Adam may have been affected by his mother's preoccupation with her own health.

The authors describe a symbiotic relationship between mother and son, with Nancy going to excessive lengths to protect him from stress, which had the damaging effect of isolating him from the outside world. She treated him as a close confidant, but "that may have been well beyond his relatively immature emotional capacities," the authors said.

Adam was 6 feet tall and weighed 112 pounds, "to the point of malnutrition" and brain damage, the authors state.

Nancy's main focus during this time was her planned purchase of an RV and a move with Adam to Washington state, in addition to her "spending a lot of time in a local restaurant and bar" where she would often stay late with friends, the report said.

The authors surmised that Adam was stressed by the planned move.

Just days before the shooting, Adam injured his head the night before Nancy Lanza was to travel to New Hampshire. His mother, in a text message, described the wound as "bloody, bloody, bloody." The incident, however, did not cause her to change her trip plans. She returned on Dec. 13, 2012.

I think her money also shielded them from having to deal with the schools-she could choose to isolate Adam from the world.

SMH. She was harming him with her beliefs. Not to mention providing him with guns. JMO

His mother was rather clearly an enabler. Her way of dealing with his issues appears to have been to give him whatever it is he wanted.

While this frightens me..it is often the case that everyone ignores signs of someones building violent response.

He never seems to have done anything about his violent obsessions until the end. Which makes it even harder to prevent.

Adam Lanza was likely an injustice collector and saw the world full of cruel injustices.

DEFINTELY worthwhile.

I have come full circle on his mother - clearly she thought, as well as many others - that she was doing all she could to help Adam. What the report highlights is that she attempted to change his environment to assist him, rather than assist him to change to fit his environment. So it is an overwhelming type of enabling. I never could, and never will, understand why it never dawned on his parents that he should not be allowed around firearms. Just the risk to his own safety - he was described as despondent numerous times - because of the risk of suicide alone (no one thinks their child would ever become a mass murderer) one would think it was inherently OBVIOUS that he should not be allowed unfettered access to guns. But, whatever.
The last thing I want to comment on is that his Dad was vilified in many places, here too I believe. His Dad seemed quite willing to contribute. He brought in the better experts when he thought it was needed. It did seem that he tried, but between Adam himself, and his mother's idiosyncrasies, he was not able to do much good.
A sad story all around. The saddest part is that although CT did a stellar job dissecting the story, it seems it is beyond hope that we as a society will improve, or change in response. I fully expect that scenarios like this will not only continue, but increase as the dumbing down of the country escalates.

Unfortunately that is often the case. I have a relative who was recently murdered by someone who had probably had signs but never acted out til recently.
