Detective believes Jennifer Kesse case will come to a conclusion by next week.

It's been three weeks since 24-year old Jennifer Kesse was last seen. Now News 13 has learned that Orlando police may be nearing the end of their investigation.

Kesse's family continues to distribute fliers in hopes of finding the woman, last seen at her home at the Mosaic Condominiums off Conroy Road.

For the last two weekends hundreds of volunteers have helped search for the missing woman. Last weekend, a S.W.A.T. team acting on a tip, carried out a search in a rooming house for Jennifer.

News 13-spoke with the lead detective in the case, who believes the case will come to a conclusion by next week.

He didn't say why, because he said it would hurt the investigation.

Detectives were following the case until 1:30 Tuesday morning, and say the case is still very active. They say they have very viable evidence, and that part of the investigation involves tracking down names and locations of transients.

GRETA VAN SUSTEREN, HOST: Now to a disturbing unsolved mystery in Florida. Where is Jennifer Kesse? She vanished without a trace three weeks ago. Now, those searches have turned up no sign of her. Her parents are confident she is still alive. Jennifer's parents, Joyce and Drew Kesse, join us live in Orlando. Joyce, I guess the first question to ask is how are you and Drew doing?

JOYCE KESSE, JENNIFER'S MOTHER: We're hanging in there, Greta. We're taking each day one day at a time.

VAN SUSTEREN: Drew, any tips or any reason for us to, you know, be optimistic tonight?

DREW KESSE, JENNIFER'S FATHER: Well, Greta, I don't know if you heard, but two nights ago, the police had a very credible tip, in fact, received a warrant to go into two homes, did so with SWAT teams. Unfortunately, Jennifer was not there. However, I learned today through a report, actually, that through the efforts of the crime line and volunteers that we've actually had 1,000 tips called in. So the people are aware of what's going on. They are helping greatly. And honestly, we're getting closer. And whoever has Jennifer should have some fear.

Missing woman's family in limbo

Regarding the recent "No mercy for abductor of child" letter:

I couldn't agree more. Why let any convicted abductor out of prison at all? Notice, I omitted "of a child." The reason for this is that my beloved daughter, Jennifer Kesse, age 24, disappeared Jan. 24, 2006, in Orlando. Her family believes she was abducted.

Something like this devastates family, friends, co-workers and all those who know the victim. My family has been thrust into this limbo-like hell ever since -- not knowing where she is, what happened and if she is alive and waiting to be rescued. Or has she been murdered? It keeps us in a crisis mode.

Without answers but with plenty of hope, faith and prayers from many people, we will, for the love of Jenn, keep her face, her story in front of the public. Miracles happen. Recent stories of people escaping from their abductors keep us strong.

Despite massive searches, an ongoing active investigation by the Orlando Police Department and having a person of interest, what we have found is that a "missing/endangered" or an abducted child gets more attention than an adult. But isn't everyone someone's child? Why do we often have different ways of handling these cases?

My daughter graduated with honors from the University of Central Florida with a degree in finance, had just bought her own condo and was promoted every year since she began her career. In an instant, her life changed. Not for robbery, not for car-jacking, Orlando police said.

What makes this all the more distressing is that Jennifer was brought up to be safety-conscious. It really makes us crazy that this could happen to someone so aware of personal safety.

Please write to our representatives about http://findjenniferkesse.com, letting them know that all missing-person and abduction cases should be treated the same, regardless of the victim's age.

Joyce Kesse

AM team reporter Walter Pacheco recorded a talk this morning by Joyce Kesse, the mother of Jennifer Kesse, during a victim's advocate conference at the Orange County Sheriff's Office. (Yesterday, it was 15 months since Jennifer went missing.) I hope you hang in until the end of the video, when Mrs. Kesse speaks about evil. We'll have more on the conference later today, including an audio report, compiled by AM team reporter April Hunt, with quotes from several participants. I'll link to the audio from the blog, but you also will be able to download it as part of our Crime: A Community Discussion podcast series here.)

Man Seen Parking Kesse's Car At Apartment Called Suspect
$1 Million Offered For Information In Case
POSTED: Thursday, May 17, 2007
UPDATED: 5:03 pm EDT May 17, 2007
<snipped>
A man videotaped parking a car belonging to missing Jennifer Kesse at an Orlando apartment complex was called a suspect by police Thursday during a press conference announcing the release of new surveillance video in the case.

The new video shows someone pulling Kesse’s car into a parking spot at the Huntington On The Green apartments on Jan. 24 and then walking away.

Orlando Police Chief Michael McCoy said the video is not high quality but it can possibly lead to new clues in the case.

"It is now time that the value of that video will support and give opportunity to those with information," and we are absolutely positive that someone has the information we need to bring this young lady home,” McCoy said.

It was not reported why the video was not released with earlier tape after Kesse was reported missing.

New push to find Jennifer Kesse

Tips have slowed to a trickle, but her parents refuse to give up in their search. This weekend there will be a renewed effort to find her.

"What it's made up of is basically six or seven groups from around the state of Florida. They're total professionals and we're not even bringing in volunteers for this. It will be strictly a professional search," Jennifer's father, Drew Kesse said.

Kesse said he hopes there is a connection with the case of Tracy Ocasio, another woman who went missing from Orlando.

"Honestly, there's a lot of overlap, and to be quite honest with you, when we go out this weekend there's a lot of overlap in that we'll search areas where Tracy may be," he said.

The search will start early Saturday morning. Searchers will work by ground, boat, and air. They will be looking in areas near Jennifer's condominium, Orlando International Airport, and in Ocoee where Tracy Ocasio vanished in late May.

Self-Proclaimed YouTube Killer Indicted for Hoax
July 2, 2009 11:45 AM
<snipped>
ATLANTA (CBS/AP) Online he was the "catchmekiller" who claimed to have 16 victims. But authorities say the YouTube video posted by Andrew Scott Haley, 26, of Gainesville, was a hoax, and he’s been indicted by a northeast Georgia grand jury for allegedly disrupting investigations into the disappearance of two women.

Haley was charged Tuesday in Hall County with evidence tampering and making false statements, the district attorney's office said.

In the video that appeared on YouTube in February, a man whose face was digitally obscured claimed to have killed 16 people and threatened to kill one more, said Gary Rothwell, a Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent.

Georgia state laws do not specifically address Internet hoaxes. District Attorney Lee Darragh would not explain the charges because the case is pending but said they “do address the situation involved in this case.”

He said a warrant had been issued for Haley, who was not in custody Wednesday. In a telephone call to a number listed for him, a woman who identified herself as his mother-in-law said Haley was working and not available to comment.

The woman, who declined to give her name, said the investigation into what started out as a game was "absolutely childish" and "a waste of taxpayer money." She said Haley could have explained that the video wasn't meant to harm anyone.

To Drew Kesse of Bradenton, Fla., whose daughter Jennifer has been missing more than three years from her home in Orlando, it was very personal. A link to the "catchmekiller" video on YouTube was posted on a Web site devoted to the search for Jennifer Kesse.

Rothwell said authorities had no choice but to follow up and identify him. Officials from several agencies were able to track down what computer the video was posted from. The computer was seized soon after, he said.

He declined to speculate on a motive, but said "people do this sort of thing for their own amusement sometimes."

Rothwell said the hoax wasted hundreds of hours and tens of thousands of dollars.

Haley's mother-in-law said the GBI was to blame for that.

Stolen Beauty
A Young Teacher And A Financial Analyst Vanish. Are Their Cases Linked?
Jan. 10, 2009
This story was originally broadcast on July 1, 2008.
Page 1 of 6
<snipped>
Tara Grinstead, an 11th-grade history teacher in Ocilla, Ga., disappeared without a trace in October 2005. Three months later, another young woman, Jennifer Kesse, also vanished in Orlando, Fla.

There were some similarities in the cases, leading investigators to wonder: are these disappearances somehow linked?

Student Dana Wilder remembers feeling a sense of dread when she heard an announcement in school that teacher Tara Grinstead should report to the office.

Dana was sitting in class at Irwin County High School on that Monday, Oct. 24, 2005. "I knew something was up then. I knew Tara would just not come to school. I think it got all the student's minds worried," Dana remembers.

By the time Police Chief Billy Hancock arrived at Tara's house, nobody had seen or heard from Tara for 34 hours. "When I arrived the car was parked in the carport. You could actually see it as you were pulling up," he remembers.

Hancock says the fact she had gone missing but her car was still there was "certainly a red flag."

But maybe most disturbing was a latex glove, found laying in the front yard.

Hancock noticed that inside the house everything appeared to be normal. "I walked through the house. No apparent sign of struggle, no forced entry," he remembers. "Her cell phone was in the charger by the nightstand. Her pocketbook and keys were missing."

Rothwell's initial impression? "It appeared that Tara may have left on her own. However, we had a glove, a latex glove that we couldn't explain. That glove indicates foul play to us."

He was also intrigued by something else found at Tara's house: a business card found wedged in the front door of Tara's home.

Investigators sealed the house, and took Tara’s car and the glove in for processing. Then they started reconstructing her last known movements.

Just days after Tara went missing, Rothwell sent the glove to the GBI crime lab in Atlanta. Trace evidence specialist Larry Peterson wasn't optimistic. "It's my experience from past cases that latex gloves like this had a relatively low rate of success," he explains.

But in this case, investigators caught a lucky break: against all odds, investigators had recovered DNA-male profile DNA-from the glove.

And besides the DNA, Rothwell says they also got a fingerprint. But when they compared the DNA and fingerprint to the men in Tara's life, there was no match.

As astonishing as it seems that someone could disappear without a trace, and that a stranger might be involved, shortly after Tara disappeared, the GBI learned of another case of a beautiful young woman who vanished, this one in Orlando, Fla., exactly three months after Tara disappeared. The similarities were eerie.

Asked if there could be a link between the cases, Rothwell says, "Possibly. It’s something we really, really need to consider."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Even as a child, people were drawn to Jennifer Kesse, says her mother Joyce. "She walked into a room and people noticed her. She was just so vibrant and really full of life," Joyce remembers.
By the time she was in her twenties, her father Drew says Jennifer had blossomed into a beautiful young lady, and her career as a financial analyst was taking off.
Just like in Tara's case, there were no signs of forced entry, and no signs of a struggle. Jen's luggage was still in the front hall, untouched. But her purse, her keys and the cell phone, which she always kept with her, were missing.
Detectives checked for activity on her ATM card and "pinged" her phone to pinpoint its location. There was no response. At 7 p.m., police Sergeant Roger Brennan says they entered her into the system as a missing person and issued an alert for both Jennifer and her car.
Two days after Jennifer’s disappearance, investigators got a major break in the case when her car was spotted at a housing complex just a mile from her condo.
Luckily, there were security cameras nearby. When police checked the tape, they watched as someone pulled her Chevy Malibu into the lot. Then, a ghostly figure emerges (video) from Jennifer’s car and calmly strolls away as if on an afternoon walk.
This person is the main suspect in Jennifer's abduction, and should be easy to identify. But because the security cameras only take a photo every three seconds, his face is obscured on the surveillance footage.
Bloodhounds were called in to track any scent from Jennifer’s car. Brennan says one of those dogs essentially tracked back to her complex.
Could Jennifer's abductor be someone who lived in her own complex? Detectives discovered there was extensive remodeling going on, including some work in Jennifer’s own unit, and Jennifer had complained to her family that some of the workers were making her feel uncomfortable.
Asked what she said, Joyce says, "They would stop and stare. …Leering stares is what she would say."
"Were these guys mostly day workers?" Van Sant asks.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two beautiful, beloved women - for everyone touched by the disappearance of Tara and Jennifer, hope now rests on a DNA match, or someone, somewhere, who will have the courage to share what they know with police.

"Someone has to do the right thing?" Van Sant asks Jennifer's father Drew.

"Yes, and it’s time. It’s been time. And it’s time right now," he says.

"I really want to see justice take place for Tara. I want the person who's responsible he held accountable for it," Tara's stepmother Connie says.

"We'll never give up," Jennifer's mother Joyce vows. "We will never give up the hope of finding her and bringing her home."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Georgia, investigators have compared the DNA of 150 men to the DNA on the glove outside Tara Grinstead’s home. There was no match.

In Florida, a task force of 12 top investigators is pursuing new leads in the disappearance of Jennifer Kesse

Teams to mount weekend search for Jennifer Kesse
Teams will be searching for Jennifer Kesse but will also have Tracy Ocasio on their minds.
6:06 AM EDT, July 31, 2009
<snipped>
This time, certified search and rescue teams are looking for missing Orlando resident Jennifer Kesse. But this search could be different from the others because they also will keep their eyes out for missing Ocoee resident Tracy Ocasio.

Some of the search areas for Kesse overlap possible locations where Ocasio may be located, her mother Liz Ocasio said earlier this week.

"The search this weekend is for Jennifer," Liz Ocasio told the Orlando Sentinel earlier this week. "But since some of the areas overlap, they won't just walk over her [Tracy Ocasio] if they find her."

A tipster had reported seeing Ocasio's yellow Chevrolet Cobalt parked on the wrong side of a two-lane road near a wooded area the night she disappeared.

That is the first credible tip that police have had about the missing 27-year-old's car since it was found abandoned near James Hataway's home hours after she was reported missing on May 27.

Kesse disappeared Jan 24, 2006. Police think she was abducted in the area of the Mosaic at Millenia condominium where she lived.

Large scale searches conducted earlier this summer by Texas EquuSearch didn't yield any clues about Ocasio's whereabouts.

The search, which will be performed by trained search and rescue teams, is planned for Aug. 1 and 2. The experts will look for Kesse, as well as other missing people in Central Florida, on a volunteer basis.

Fifty to 70 trained and experienced searchers, including firefighters, police officers and K-9 handlers, will head out from a command post on John Young Parkway and L.B. McLeod Road Saturday morning.

Saturday's search will involve a fleet of vehicles, including airboats ATVs and three aerial units.

Drew and Joyce Kesse announced a "preplanned extensive ground search" with a news release Monday evening.

No law enforcement agencies are involved in the search, but the Kesses said police have been made aware of the search should they need to respond.

Kesse Tip Prompts Search Near Mall
POSTED: Monday, June 29, 2009
UPDATED: 7:32 pm EDT June 29, 2009

Orlando police detectives conducted a search near the Mall at Millenia after receiving a tip related to the case of Jennifer Kesse, who was last seen in January 2006, but turned up nothing.

The search took place Monday near the area of John Young Parkway and Millenia Boulevard, Orlando police Sgt. Barb Jones said.

Kesse's father, Drew Kesse, contacted a private search group over the weekend and asked them to inspect the lot again. The Kesse family has always believed the area might hold clues to their daughter's disappearance.

Drew Kesse said the land has always bothered him because it once contained a large pond, but sometime after his daughter's disappearance part of the pond was filled in.

"I hoped she hadn't been lying there for three years and five months right there under our nose. We have to find her someday. We have to," Drew Kesse said.

Dad: Kesse Visited Same Bar As Ocasio
Suspect In Recent Disappearance Could Be Tied To Other Attacks
POSTED: Thursday, June 4, 2009
UPDATED: 8:39 pm EDT June 4, 2009
<snipped>
Jennifer Kesse's parents want to know if the primary suspect in a recent disappearance could be connected to their daughter's disappearance.

Kesse went missing in January of 2006 and her father, Drew Kesse, said she frequented the Tap Room, which is the same bar that Tracy Ocasio was last seen at.

"That was her old hang. That was her old neighborhood," Drew Kesse said.

Jennifer Kesse lived next door to the bar for three years.

Ocasio was last seen early in the morning on May 27 after spending the evening prior at the bar in Metro West. Hataway said Ocasio drove him home from the bar, but left his house around 2 a.m.

On Thursday, investigators named James Hataway, 28, as the primary suspect in Ocasio's disappearance.

Hataway lives in Ocoee, which is where Jennifer Kesse worked.

Volunteers Search For Jennifer Kesse

Several search groups gathered at the search command post Saturday morning to go over what areas they would be searching.

In addition to manpower, searchers used an amphibious car, K-9 search teams, and airboats in an attempt to rule out more areas where Kesse could be.

For Jennifer’s mother, Joyce Kesse, their search seems endless, but the searching helps, even if nothing is found.

"We don't know what happened. We don't know if she's dead, but hopefully something will be revealed."

The search will continue all weekend. Local law enforcement is not involved in the search but say they will be ready and available if anything is found.

At one point, search teams were also going to search an area of interest in the case of Missing Ocoee woman Tracy Ocasio. They have since decided to call off that search, saying the Kesse search area is so large they wont have the time or resources to search another area.

UPDATED: Searchers Halt For The Day In Kesse, Ocasio Cases
Sunday, August 02, 2009 6:05:24 AM
<snipped>
More than six hours of searching Saturday produced no evidence in the disappearance of Jennifer Kesse, a woman who disappeared without a trace in 2006.

For the latest search, half a dozen teams of certified search and rescue volunteers looked at areas by her home near the Mall at Millenia. The search was centered around the intersection of John Young Parkway and Presidents Drive.

The volunteers covered a three-mile radius around the intersection and called it off to avoid rising temperature. But they will return Sunday.

"It's painful for me. We know the statistics and we know the realities," said Joyce Kesse, Jennifer's mom.

The searchers relied on an unusual tool, a radio-controlled aircraft equipped with a remote control camera.

Saturday marked the first time Kesse's parents met Liz Ocasio, Tracy's mom.

Liz Ocasio vowed in July to dog James Hataway, possibly the last person to Tracy Ocasio, at every court appearance

Tracy Ocasio has been missing since when she gave James Hataway a ride home from a Metrowest bar.

"How do you decide? I don't understand when people ask us, 'When will you give up?'" said Joyce Kesse, Jennifer's mother. "I just can't wrap my head around it."

Joyce and her husband, Drew, stood united on Saturday, front and center as professional searchers prepared to head out and look for their daughter.

The last time anyone saw Jennifer Kesse was Jan. 24, 2006. Authorities said they believe someone abducted her at or near her Orlando apartment in the Mosaic at Millenia condo complex.

Almost four years later, her parents seemed as hopeful as ever and refused to give up on finding their only daughter.

"We're not letting evil win twice," Joyce Kesse said. "That's probably one of our biggest things. Evil will not win twice."

"We have lives," Drew Kesse said. "We understand bad happens, we do. We are doing things about it. It just can't rip you until you can't do anything about it...then what good are you?"

The Kesses said they'll never give up hope for their daughter.

The search for her and Ocasio will resume Sunday morning.

UPDATED: Day 1 in search for Jennifer Kesse turns up empty

About 70 certified volunteer searchers from around the state showed up Friday night to help Jennifer's parents find their missing daughter. The trained searchers, many of whom are former or current firefighters, are paying for the search out of their own pockets. There will be no volunteers needed for the day's physical ground search.

Crews will be searching a three-mile radius around John Young Parkway and Conroy Road both Saturday and Sunday. They have an amphibious hydratrek vehicle, airboats with sonar scanner, K-9 cadaver dogs and a remote-controlled drone airplane with cameras attached underneath that can take video of area below.

“This search, is a joint search effort with FL-3 ASAR as the sponsor of this mission working with five other top notch certified search teams in Florida," reads a statement on Jennifer's Web site . "All six teams will take an equal part in this search mission for Jennifer."

Yet even with this latest effort, Drew Kesse, Jennifer's father says three years of not knowing what happened to their daughter is still taking a toll on his family. "When this is all over Sunday night were going to crash and it will take us probably a week to recover we seem strong in the public, but it's a horrible life, we miss Jennifer tremendously," said Kesse.

However, at the end of day one, crews ended their search of a three-mile radius around John Young Parkway and Conroy Road at around 3 p.m. with nothing new. Search crews will return again Sunday.

There is a $10,000 reward available to anyone who helps lead authorities to a man photographed in Kesse's complex the day she disappeared.

Search For Kesse Continues
No Clues Found Saturday In Search For 26-Year-Old

Search teams will be back out Sunday morning, looking for Kesse along with Tracy Ocasio, also missing. The search has brought the families of Kesse and Ocasio together for the first time.

Since Ocasio spent time in the same area, they also searched for her. She was last seen in May leaving an Orlando bar with James Hataway, who is in jail on other charges.

Local 6 spoke to Ocasio's mother and she said that she is hopeful, as a new credible witness may bring them some clues. The witness believes he saw Ocasio's car the morning she disappeared in the area of Binion Road, just north of Ocoee High School.

The search was primarily for Kesse, but because the search area overlaps, the Ocasios also monitored activity at the command post located at the First Baptist Church of Orlando.

The teams are using a variety of different tools to comb through areas of interest. Searchers utilized airboats, all-terrain vehicles, cadaver dogs, and even modified airplanes equipped with TV cameras.

Some of the volunteers traveled to Orlando from as far away as Georgia. The search will resume again at 6 a.m.Sunday.

No New Clues Found In Kesse Search
Kesse's Parents Won't Give Up Hope

An intense search over the weekend failed to reveal any new clues to locate an Orlando woman who disappeared more than three years ago.

Searchers spent the weekend looking for clues in several areas of Orange County. Kesse's parents said the search is far from over.

K-9 units assisted in the search. Amaretto is a chocolate labrador retriever, who is 3 years old and certified by the National Association for Search and Rescue. She's in training to find human remains.

"The dogs can smell things that we can't. They smell things and detect things we can't detect," K-9 handler Whitney Hart said.

In Sunday's search, crews looked through muddy trails with K-9s, and cut their way through thick brush looking for even the smallest clue. Tiny cameras were even mounted on remote control airplanes giving searchers a birds eye view.

Jennifer's parents, along with 70 certified volunteer searchers from around the state arrived in Orange County Friday night to help in this weekend's search. It's one search on a list of many, but this time Search and Rescue Spokesperson Joe St. Cyr, says it's different.

Yet even with this latest effort, Drew Kesse, Jennifer's father says three years of not knowing what happened to their daughter is still taking a toll on his family. "Joyce went home yesterday, it's just a little bit overwhelming for her, but we thank these people behind us and we are humbled. I've never met people who just want to help they're not after anything, they just want to help," said Jennifer's father, Drew Kesse.

However, at the end of the weekend, crews ended their search of a three-mile radius around John Young Parkway and Conroy Road with nothing new. At this time, they're not sure when they plan to return to search for Kesse. However, there is a very good chance the next search they do will be for Tracy Ocasio.
