Here’s the harrowing account of the man in Halifax, which happened just five months ago, in February, so just a few weeks before Caleb!

He himself can’t comprehend how it happened that he wasn’t able to use his arms to prevent himself from completely falling in. He just took a step on the “pristine snow”, as he says, and the next thing he knew he was in ice-cold water. A woman heard his cries for help, saw him down the hole, and called 911.

Very happy for this man, yet it is also painful to hear if I imagine what poor Caleb might have gone through, with no savior to rescue him in time.

(I apologize if this was posted before. I thought someone posted some video before of an incident, but I don’t know if it was this one.)

Yes, this definitely confirms that the act of suddenly stepping your foot into a huge drop is enough to completely throw you off balance in every sense. This man was fortunate enough to have a witness to his yelling for help; otherwise it seems clear that he would not have survived.

Was this manhole put out in there in this farm field as part of the initial construction in anticipation of it being developed some day? The term man hole is used and suggests that this is like a man hole in the middle of city street that workmen use but this one is much narrower.
I just measured my shoulder width ( I am a regular size woman)and there is no way my shoulders would go down a 15 diameter hole unless my arms were straight over my head and I went straight down in, and it would be a tight fit for a 25 inch diameter hole. His shoulders are a lot wider than mine.
And, most of all, how and why did he walk BAREFOOT across that field for that distance and be unlucky enough to find a 15 inch hole and step into it . And, if all that could have happened, were there rungs on the inside of this manhole that he might have used to pull himself back up to the top? How do the workmen who use the hole get back up? MOO MOO MOO

So, I wonder—what of the sighting of Caleb walking past Simmons Bank on Rodd Field Road?

A false sighting? Or would it still fit in the timeline somehow?
I too believe that must be a false sighting as it was only ever mentioned on GHI to the best of my knowledge. One thing I thought about is maybe Caleb was walking backwards when he stepped into the hole. He was out taking pictures any maybe backed up to get a different angle and stepped into the hole. Sort of like a person stepping backwards and falling off a stage or a dock.

It was mentioned by the investigator that the cover was off that manhole and may have been damaged when someone plowed that field. I wonder if the person who did the plowing ever notified the city of the damage done to the manhole and if so when that report was made. With the cover off the manhole and grass over growing the hole that was an accident waiting to happen. And with Caleb wondering around there in the middle of the night one can easily imagine this accident occurring. It is still a bit miraculous that this missing manhole cover was not discovered during the initial searches.

The open manhole in the farm field was 25 inches in diameter, per both LE and the People magazine posted upthread. The 15-inch pipe is the lateral at the bottom of the 15-foot-deep manhole. It's that 15-inch lateral that ultimately carried water - and, LE tentatively believes, Caleb's skeletal remains - to the Perry Place lift station wet well.

I am led to believe it was in a grassy field. I also assume that if the field was plowed, it belonged to someone using it as an agricultural area. They might not have considered that a stranger would walk across that field.

I'd love to know if the cover was still off when LE found CH in the Perry Place lift station well. It could have been put back at any time after the accident.

IMO, given LE's current working theory that Caleb most likely perished in a freak accident, falling into an open manhole, if in fact they had video footage of him walking on Rodd Field Road that night, there would be absolutely no reason to hold that information back now.

Coincidentally, not only was GH Investigates the only place I heard about the supposed Rodd Field Road footage, it was also the only place I heard (and kind of saw) that the recovered remains included an intact, fully-fleshed torso. GH showed cellphone video of that, blurring parts, and said a credible source had provided the video to him. Yet in the People mag article and Channel 5 interviews, Deputy Chief Breedlove unequivocally stated that the remains were skeletal. Was GH taken in by fake information? JMO, it seems maybe so.

I mention this only to to say that I'll be wondering for a long time what it was about this sad case, or what it was about Caleb, or what it was about any and all of it that drove such intense, incredible and sometimes astonishing rumor mongering, breathless misstatements and outright speculations presented as fact, sometimes even by mainstream media.

I’m not sure I will ever understand how this was accidental. I just don’t see him being able to just fall in with the measurements given. He wasn’t a skinny, lanky kid. My heart breaks for his family.

That video really surprised me, that he would still be fleshed. I was sure he would have been more decomposed by then.

I was fully expecting mostly skeletal remains forced down the pipes by the recent rains, just based on the amount of time, the bacteria rich environment, the agitation of the water.

So maybe what GH was sent by his source was someone's remains being found in a lift station... but I'd be surprised if it was Caleb's.

I asked this before- seems that his arms/shoulders would not just slip right through. Even with a head injury, seems that he would have been seen or heard- it is just weird- IMO. How deep was the manhole?

amazing that he had no injuries... guess the physics of this is more like a Bugs Bunny cartoon than I can believe.

The open manhole in the farm field was 25 inches in diameter and 15 feet deep. I don't know if it had the rebar ladder rungs often built into urban manholes.

IMO, it can no longer be claimed that the field was impossible, painful, or unpleasant to walk around in. Here is a woman who was walking there with her dog. She was not searching for Caleb, she was just walking her dog. For pleasure, presumably.

No evidence that Caleb had any reason to avoid the field, and certainly no evidence to claim that only foul play could have caused him to be there. It is a place where people walk their dogs, maybe take a shortcut between shops and the apartments. The way it keeps getting described as some kind of minefield full of prickly thorns and sharp rocks and venomous snakes is clearly not an accurate picture.

All the important bits below (RSBM):

The remains, in an advanced state of decomposition, were sent to the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification, where forensic analysts confirmed they belonged to Harris though DNA analysis, according to a release sent out by the Corpus Christi Police Department Wednesday.

Local officials are now awaiting results from the Nueces County Medical examiner’s final autopsy report, which will rule the cause and manner of death to inform how the investigation will move forward.

...

“We opened all the manhole covers on the storm drains from South Padre Island Drive all the way back to Holly Road,” Green said. “There’s always an opening for the drains, so potentially someone could get in there.”

He pointed out that sewage manhole covers are found in the middle of the streets in the area, but police did not check those due to their location and the difficulty involved in opening them.

At the time, people were unaware that a manhole cover was located in one of the adjacent fields across Harris' apartment complex that was part of the drainage system. It was situated about 110 feet from the sidewalk.

“To our knowledge, no one noticed that, found it or reported it during that initial search,” Green said. “We don’t know if it was open at that time or not.”

Green said on April 17, a woman was walking her dog through that field and noticed the manhole was open and the cover was missing. She posted the finding on Facebook and then notified CCPD, he said.

CCPD detectives went to the field the next day and located the open manhole, which was partially filled with water, Green said.
...
Green said they did not notice anything or have a way to enter the sewer. With the water level in the lift station collection having been pumped to a low-enough level to inspect it, the crew began to search for a body or missing items.

...

The pipes that comprise the sewage system range in size from smaller pipes to larger pipes about 12- or 15-inches in diameter, Green said. Manholes that are about 24-inches in diameter drop down about 18-feet to a concrete pit.

The pit provides an access point to the well for the wastewater department and is covered by a steel grate secured with a padlock. Workers inside the building were checking on the pumps when they first discovered clothing that alarmed them according to Green. when the Corpus Christi Fire Department went outside to open the pit, a portion of Harris' body was visibly clear through the grate – including his head.

The next day, members of the wastewater department returned to the lift station with a large tanker truck to pump the rest of the contents of the well into the truck and transport them to another facility, finding clothing and bones.

A week after finding Harris' body, police returned to the lift station to run a camera up the length of pipe leading from the pump station to the manhole in the field to see if they could find any other items, such as Harris' phone which has been missing since the day he disappeared.
...
They interviewed Harris' roommates, who agreed to polygraph tests, Green said.

"After we searched that area as thoroughly as we did, the thought was that maybe he reached out to somebody for a ride," Green said. "We didn't find anything like that on his phone. All the vehicles that came into that area during the time period where he went missing we were able to identify through phone records, the tower dumps, the geofence and there was no connection. They just happened to be in the area at that time."

-------

Note that when you slip, the auto-response is usually to throw your arms up to balance. Shoulder width with arms over head is much narrower.

Around 600 feet from where Harris was last seen, investigators found an uncovered manhole, partially camouflaged by tall grass. Visibility was also poor the night Harris vanished. According to Deputy Chief Billy Breedlove of the CCPD, “It was probably one of the foggiest nights we’d had.”

Thanks for this post and information. I’m glad this was cleared up, because it was misinformation that the field was impossible to walk in.

It certainly makes a difference, and would explain why months ago the assistant Chief of Police said that this was the most “baffling” missing persons case he’d encountered.

He would surely not have said that if a hookup with a stranger had preceded the vanishing. But falling into a manhole would certainly be baffling as if he fell off the face of the earth, if that incident were unknown to law enforcement, as it apparently was.
