Interestingly I could have possibly ran into Alan, but never did, as during the times he was in high school and college I was in those same areas.
RIP and condolences to his family and friends.
The GPS i n a car is a receiver, not a transmitter and not a recorder (unless one pays for extra services which it appears the dealer did not).
The power comes from the normal car battery.
I thought it was mentioned in one of the articles that the husband tried to access some other electronic devices like the computer and everything was password protected. The phone might be the same.
Link please? I am interested in learning about this as all I have read is that tracking is an "opt in" option with the in-car systems (and a money stream for the manufacturer).
I believe when it was discussed before that the factory "tracking" service required monthly subscription. The dealer may have chosen to forgo the expense because they aren't renting to the general public but to a customer who will return to their own car.
Independent rental companies, as well...
There's been a lot of discussion about locking keys in the car. The thing is on most cars that have an electronic fob with a removable key there is some procedure to lock the key in the car. For example, you're at the beach. You want to lock the car but you don't want to take a chance on getting...
Just to clarify: There are three possibilities as I don't know the order of the pings:
1) 315 north to the "top" of I-270, head west then south to the Hilliard area.
2) 315 south to I-70 (or I-670 then I-70 if I-670 was completed by then). I-70 takes you to the Hilliard area.
3) 315 south to...
It's quite possible with someone near the intersection of US Rt23 and I-285 (on the south side of Columbus, not the more populated north side) that they could have been hitchhiking. Mile marker 53 would put him near the river but also near the western ramps between 23 and 270. The 23/270...
But if Waze didn't say anything (and the one report said Waze was closed when Snapchat opened or something similar to that), he may have assumed he was still on the correct path and would meet up with the interstate or a road leading to the interstate soon.
Waze doesn't always take you the same...
So, if Waze was turned off or muted, there would be no obvious, easy to see alert that you should turn rather than continue straight and that road turns to Salt Flat Rd.
That is why the question "Why did Jason turn onto Salt Flat Rd" is not valid in my opinion. Study the map of Lulling.
He did...
So many people think he was targeted for the "expensive car" he was driving. If the car was the target, why was it abandoned? I just don't see the car as being the reason.
There is a very good chance his personal car (in for service or repairs) was more valuable than the loaner.
Only once have...

I'm not sure of the exact location found, because neither I-70 or I-71 would have a mile marker 51 in Franklin...
The only references I've seen to the pause go back to "rumors' from unapproved sources.
Do I think it could have happened? Certainly, whatever on the phone may have distracted him at the gas station could have also distracted him as the started to drive away and he dealt with it before driving off.
The two businesses are side by side. Here's a link to a reporter referencing it earlier in the discussion:
