I'm looking at some past UID / Missing Persons threads to better understand what's working and what isn't. I'm finding that a lot of the primary source material - like Namus records of this case - have already been pulled down. Many news sources will also blink out over time. If you want your...
Thank you for that! It feels good to have been part of something productive like this, and does the ego good to have it noticed. I do hope that Kaylaraow has gotten word of her match.
And I do miss Foxfire. I'd gotten to meet him a couple of times. Warm, engaging, fascinated by...
One of the themes of the Killing Season has been the poverty of US crime related data sets. No one knows how many women have gone missing, or been found dead. Tens of thousands of public entities are using thousands of approaches to collecting and sharing data and only a small fraction it is...
Not entirely on topic, but close. I came across this map on the official NYC Crime Map site. It is set to report rapes per thousand residents for October 2016. The rate for the 106th Precinct, which includes Howard Beach, was very low, relative to most other areas.
Welcome to the thread, and to Websleuths as a whole, Daniellam1330! It's great to have people on the thread who knew the victim. It can be discouraging to follow a case like this one that is slow to resolve, but the truth will out eventually, and I hope that we'll see you back here and on...
Thanks for that, and for that reference to CODIS. I'm early on the learning curve on this stuff, but it's starting to make better sense to me. If I'm understanding correctly from the Wikipedia page for CODIS, NamUs and state level DNA collection efforts take in DNA samples, digitize them...
It sounds like this is the right place! A little mapping skill can go a long way on Websleuths, and you sound like you have a lot. It's exciting to hear that you have worked with ArcGIS and Google Earth. They bigger guns that we are used to on Websleuths, but I'm sure they could be put to...
I've been wondering about that too and just tried to Google up an answer. NamUs does DNA samples and profiles, and has "DNA analysis" capabilities, and has some sort of automated matching capabilities for matching personal data, but doesn't claim to have the automaton to run DNA profiles...
Police ask public for help in identifying remains in Ridley Creek State Park

I share your impulse to wonder why LE would hesitate to deploy this awesome tool. But I bet it will prove tricky to apply, or at least until LE and the legal system gets its arms around it. Remember the polygraph. In some ways, DNA face estimations would be less good than a witness sketch -...
So if I'm understanding correctly, there's a fair likelyhood that LISK lives on a boat, eh? ;-)
You are getting good, c4rtm4n. That Rossmo map is much slicker than the ones you were doing some months back on the Colorado highway shootings. Thanks for doing it.
Fascinating stuff. It sounds like a very promising technology. Most of what I picked up in a quick Google search was a year or two out of date, but it was already awing me. I imagine that it will take a while for us to figure out just how to work it into law enforcement work. Here's an...
It's good to see cartographic talent coming to Websleuths! Welcome!
I've made some WS case maps in the form of linked Google My Maps, and seen lots of others. I could have missed them, but I have never seen anything beyond screenshots from any other mapping platform, including Google Earth...
"No it's not", you've clearly put a lot of thought into this (the post immediately below), so the fault may be mine, but I'm having trouble understanding your larger point. Could you give me more on the connections you are seeing?
Docrocker,
Mags forwarded me a link to this question of yours. Google My Maps doesn't afford a direct way to set vectors based on exact bearings, but it does let you plot lines, and its projection is nicely Cartesian, so you should be able to plots the two straight lines you describe...
Great article! Really brings her into focus for me. Thank you for posting it!

Do any of you have a sense of how rapists generally react to a victim fighting back, as Karina was said to have? Bullies are often apt to back off. Do rapists? Does it tell us something about Karina's killer that he persisted?
Yes, it was the pillow case, not the pillow that was missing.
"They [LE] later determined a black-and-white zebra-striped pillow case was missing from a pillow and keys to the apartment and Niswender's private bedroom were missing from a lanyard."*

As regular site visitors know, I'm convinced that a lot of the many side and back window shatterings on I-25 last year were deliberate and probably executed with a high powered air rifle of some sort - just as these attacks in Anna, TX clearly were. While the MO was clear in Anna, however, the...
