Don't you wonder what he is doing tonight? LOL I adore him too and will never forget his Glass Spider concert. Phenom he is. xox

Scandi just quoting you cause yours was the last post concerning the telethon! I do believe that all of the songs that were performed are available for purchase through iTunes for 99cents. All of the proceeds will then go to the people of Haiti. At least that is how I took it.

Hope this will raise even more for all who are suffering.

Mel

I'm confused. Was the Telethon two hours long? I found where I could watch the performances (huffingtonpost) over the internet and the sound was better over my computer than it had been from the TV. I wish they would have announced the artists names somehow as I don't know who they all are (like the women with braids who sang like an old spiritual song with such emotion and heart) who was she? I tried to find a list of the performers but couldn't find one. Also I didn't hear the performance that Scandi is referencing. What gives?

Thanks to the poster (SWAG1959) who i.d.'d that it was Dave Matthews who sang with Neil Young - cool. Anyway, I had his album and practically wore it out but never paid attention to what he looked like - he's aged well imo. Plus I noticed that DM adjusted his voice to go along with NY's. I thought that was professional and kind.

Thank you very much. I knew all of them but three. Do you happen to know who sang while playing the guitar with Justin Timberlake? Thank you.

I found the answer on YouTube (almost forgot I'm supposed to sleuth stuff - ha). His name is Matt Morris and has written songs for JT. I notice on 1/19/10 a post that says "Ellen can't stop talking about her new favorite musician, Matt Morris." I'm going to listen to him on YouTube later. Their joint performance was excellent imo - really showcased JT's voice to the max. All the performances were wonderful and heartfelt. Thank you Artists.

My sis-in-law is in Florida (has been since Friday) - has finally been reunited with one of the 2 children. Love this pic! However, the girl's brother is still tied up in all the red tape. He supposedly is on a plane with two other kids today, but there is talk about Orlando holding onto the children, wanting to put them in foster homes first - meanwhile the adoptive parents are there, frantic to get their children. Also something about the adoptive parents having to have the paperwork to be foster parents.Things are very unclear right now as they are trying to get the straight story. We are hoping for a reunion with her son since she already has the daughter.

On GMA this morning, George S. mentioned that the Telethon raised over fifty millions dollars. Way to go.

Local news reported that a team of twenty Docs, Nurses, Anesthesiologists and Orthopedic Doc are leaving today for Port-au-Prince. Each specialist is paying their own way, $1,400.00, in support of a second wave effort to help the injured. The team is a collective effort of U of Chicago, Rush U, Northwestern U, and UIC.

Additionally, a separate team of five is going to a town on the Haitian border.

What a wonderful picture. Can others see that they look the same? Do you see what I'm seeing? What a great picture!

Do you know what the difference is regarding the daughter and the son's paperwork? It is upsetting to think that somebody is trying to make the situation harder for the children and their adoptive parent/s. I don't understand that at all. As long as there is some way to verify that a child had been designated to a parent prior to the earthquake the child should be given to that parent now imo (even if the brother's adoption had not gotten underway, let him stay with his sister - it's a no brainer imo.) Why put the children through additional confusion. It makes no sense. What benefit does the foster care step add to the situation? I don't get it.

Aside from paperwork, depending on the age of the child, there's a simple test; mother stands in a room among a few other people. Child enters the room. If he runs up to her with a look of recognition on his face, she's his mother. Duh! Why do they want to complicate this thus making it harder for the adoptive parent and the child - why? What do the red tapers say?

Too funny - a LOT of people have said how much Patricia looks like her mama! I totally see it in this pic. I love this pic and can't stop looking at it. Patricia looks so happy!

Our family have been refreshing and updating on Facebook and that is where I'm getting the info. The latest is this, from Dawn, which explains it more:

Here's the latest: he is supposed to be on a plane with two other kids whose families only got one of their children. The Dept. Of Health & Human Resources & (HHR) & Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) is now taking kids into Child Proctective Custody (CPC) and putting them into foster care until adoptive parents are all licensed as foster parents (we are good enough to be approved to be adoptive parents, but not good enough to be foster parents?? It's better to send them to people who do not know and love them already??). A different group of kids arrived into Sarasota last night and are in CPC. My agency director told me that I need to go to the Sanford airport in Orlando (the same one on the national news that held parents in a different room so that they could not speak to the press and took 35 hours to process 80 children-whereas Miami took 13 hrs to process 100). I am told the the staff are being very passive with the exception, a woman who started this whole thing, who is in charge of HHR at this location. I am supposed to ask for her & demand answers. Insist on getting our son because we already have our daughter. Please pray for the RIGHT thing to happen!!! This is seriously beyond ridiculous & WE WANT TO GO HOME!!!! Patricia keeps asking when we can go to Minnesota.

The good news is it sounds like Philippe is with other separated children so we are hoping that will mean he will be reunited with Dawn and Patricia. However, it sounds very grim about the news how the kids are immediately being taking into child protective services. I hope Dawn is there when he gets there to prevent that.

I love my sis-in-law but I have seen her get mad and I sure would not want to be those officials if she is denied her son!

And as far as I know there was no difference in paperwork between Patricia and Philippe.

I sure hope things go smoothly. It's so stressful as it stands already. No, you don't want her to cut off her nose to spite her face so-to-speak (been there, done that!).

My grandpa used to recite this to me: I went to Minnesota on a little boata, took a drink of vaata, cost me a dollar and a quaata. (I have no idea why I remember that - he died when I was eight.)

Just got off the phone with my mom. Moved me to tears.

Patricia has been having trouble sleeping - she has been waking up whimpering. :(
Dawn has been having trouble trying to convince Patricia that she can drink all her water in her water bottle. Patricia keeps saving it, thinking she will run out :(

However there are wonderful things - we believe she had her first bath with hot water in a tub. She was all smiles and splashing water everywhere.
She was beyond excited when they took her to a mall. They had to get some clothes for warmer weather.
Patricia saw an escalator and took off running from Dawn and by the time Dawn was going up the escalator to find her, Patricia was coming back down LOL She had to be told that is not something to do!

Just thought I'd share this as it shows more from the child's perspective. Sure can't wait to hug those two!

LOL! Funny what you remember. Can't say I have ever heard that little saying!

The things we take for granted. (regarding drining water, baths, mall, etc.)
When I heard about the escalator, I immediately thought "if she has shoelaces make sure she knows not to stand near the edge of the stairs as that's dangerous.". Once you're a mother there's no going back - ha.

The latest :( :( :( Looks like UNICEF thinks they can sweep in and keep my brother's son from him and his family. Unbelievable that they separated him from his sister. I am just boiling mad right now and will soon be on the phones to anyone that will listen. I guess I can understand they want to do what is best, but to keep children WITH HOMES AND FAMILIES WAITING FOR THEM that have already had paperwork cleared is unacceptable! My former FBI agent uncle is saying they should file kidnapping charges to get someone to look at this and make something happen.

Seventy-nine of the 106 children from Maison des Enfants de Dieu (Children of the House of God) orphanage, who were granted humanitarian parole, arrived in Florida on Saturday, January 23rd. The Haitian Government has blocked the remaining 27 children, including the adopted son of the For His Glory (FHG) Adoption Outreach ... See MorePresident, Kim Harmon, from departing Port-au-Prince. In a surprise announcement, Haitian Prime Minister Bellerive stated that all future cases of humanitarian parole would have to complete an exit process with his office. He has not yet defined this exit process so no action can be taken to bring the remaining children to their adoptive parents in the United States.

The Maison des Enfants de Dieu orphanage staff announced that they soon would be accepting 30 children orphaned since the January 12th earthquake. Over the past week, the orphanage has received numerous requests to take newly orphaned children. In one instance alone, it was asked to accept 70 orphans. The orphanage and FHG remain firmly committed to the children and the people of Haiti. Pat Flowers, an FHG board member who has been in Haiti this past week consulting with the orphanage staff, agreed, "we must act responsibly in accepting new orphans to ensure that we will have sufficient supplies and facilities to care for these children." Pat explained that not only is each child, who is united with adoptive parents, helped, but much-needed space is opened up at the orphanage to help other children. He added, "The need in Port-au-Prince is great."

Kim Harmon reiterated the need to quickly complete the departure process of the remaining 27 children, who have been granted humanitarian parole. She stated "These children have adoptive families waiting to care for them in the United States. The faster we resolve the departure issue, the quicker we will be able to reach out to those unfortunate children in Port-au-Prince who now have no one." FHG urges adoptive parents, supporters and all those concerned about the welfare of the orphans in Haiti to contact their Congressmen, Senators, Governors and the White House to urge the Secretary of State to quickly resolve this issue with Prime Minister Bellerive.

I am somewhat confused as to why you are blaming UNICEF for this problem. The info you quoted states that it is the Haitian government that is holding up the process in Haiti and CPS in Florida. Can you provide a link to the complete story so that perhaps we can understand what part UNICEF supposedly plays in this situation?

Yeah, reading back on it I realized there was no mention of UNICEF - I was adding my comment based on an article I read before - I should have included it!

"We are very concerned that there are increasing reports that children are being picked up and trafficked out of the country," said Kent Page, a spokesman for the U.N. Children's Fund (UNICEF). But he had no details of specific cases.

Authorities also fear that legitimate aid groups may have flown earthquake orphans out of the country for adoption before efforts to find their parents had been exhausted.

As a result, the Haitian government last week halted these types of adoptions. "There is no question that either NGOs (non-governmental organizations) or institutions of any kind can take children off the streets (for adoption) and say that they are orphans," said Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive, expressing his fears that this might be happening.

Again, I understand the need to be cautious, but legitimate adoptions are being caught up in all the red tape.

sdshelt, This has to be painful for your family. Have faith that it will all work out in the end. Last night Anderson Cooper featured a segment about the concern about child trafficking. He asked something along the lines of is this a serious concern? The answer was "yes" because there are bad people ready to sweep these children into a black market for the purpose of illegal adoption or worse. On top of that, some of the children may still have living parents or close relatives who they have been separated from.

I know the above explanation does not fit your family's situation, but the timing of trying to ward off any bad thing has created another bad thing - that previously adopted children are on hold also. CNN repeats their segments many times; it will probably air again today. It would have been nice if they had covered how the in progress adoptions will be affected.
Let's hope and pray for a short delay.

I wonder why they use the term "parole"? That word is connected to prisoners. We're talking about children here. I'd say humanitarian residency or something other than "parole". Strange.

Our hospitals in South Florida are starting to fill with injured people

they are bringing kids in too....

and help is going out

in the first aftermath there is no communication, the runway was not accessible...now things are starting to take shape...

God Bless these poor people

it does not look good for my friend Rich or the others from Lynn University

I read where one of the girls was so moved by her FIRST and only day in Haiti, just seeing the poverty...that she had told her classmates she was changing her major to social work....Britany Gengel..she is among the missing

that is a testimony to them....and I hope that others will follow their kind hearts and care about this poor country ...this is a disaster of epic proportions...and they need any help they can get, even if it is just prayers, well wishes and positive thoughts JMO

Anderson Cooper reported yesterday that nearly 5,000 Americans are missing in Haiti. He is highlighting the search at the Montana Hotel. Bil Hawkins, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, states they are "trying to recover bodies with respect and dignity and honor ...for some sense of closure ...". AC states that the Montana Hotel is one of the most searched sites in Port Au Prince. ... Some Americans who died have already disappeared. He's talking about how the Haitian government is bulldozing people into piles and not even covering them with dirt. Dishonoring the dead. Mass graves not covered over ... just dumped on the ground ... little effort has been made to cover them ... this is not how anyone wants their loved one's life to end. Haitian government could at least make the effort to bury their citizens and others but they are literally just leaving the bodies in piles. AC said the Haitain government has answering to do as to why they are treating people this way - the dead and the living - no one from the government has answered their calls to explain why they are not making an effort to give the dead a proper buriel.

Lynn University Richard Bruno's lovely daughter, Lauren Bruno. nods while AC says that her dad served the foreign service for 21 years. Lauren does not blame the State Department but wants her dad home however that could be done. She realizes this is a disaster that is hard to deal with and AC assures her they are working to recover the people at the Montana with dignity. She thanks the rescuers for their help. She wants people to know that her dad was a wonderful person who only wanted to help people and make people happy by teaching and trying to help. Lauren has sisters and they are hanging in there but it's hard for them. All the Lynn U families need closure and want their family members home for buriel. AC wishes them strength.
