Makes you wonder if the staffing was even adequate

It's definitely not the most well-run facility, that's for sure.

As of September 2021, the jail had seven open positions it needed to fill. New hires have quit their first day on the job because of staffing issues.

In November 2021, a former detention officer was arrested for smuggling meth inside the jail.

Sheriff Singleton also forced his deputy sheriff to take administrative leave after he announced he was going to run against Singleton.

Why in the world an inmate charged with capital murder and has a history of escape plans was allowed to be housed in this facility is beyond me.

I think there were other deputies that carried guns but they were out transferring other prisoners. It makes me wonder if Vicki planned this to happen when she knew the other COs would be occupied.
And somehow she thought no one would think transferring him to the courthouse for a mental health evaluation was odd, as apparently none take place there! Does make you wonder how many others in the facility were in on this, but why??

If she was participating in this, she had to have known that the likelihood of getting caught is very high. Why do something that is criminal and get her sentenced to prison at this point in her life? It just doesn't make sense..... JMHO
She could have been coerced. Casey claims to have been paid to murder Connie Ridgeway. If that is true then there is someone on the outside who wants to get Casey out of jail to keep their identity safe.

The DA said that Connie Ridgeway was a grand jury witness in a case involving "elderly financial exploitation" at the time. So money is involved.

What investigators are working to figure out now is a possible motive. According to District Attorney Connolly, White said he was paid to do it.

“That’s the unknown about this point is the claim that he was paid to do it,” Connolly said. “We have certainly looked at the angle because she was a witness in a grand jury unrelated proceeding that was going on at that time.”

Connolly elaborates that Ridgeway was a witness in a case involving elderly financial exploitation.

Woooo... this was a lot. I'm all caught up now. I seriously hope this woman didn't throw her life away and possibly get murdered because someone gave her attention. This entire situation infuriates me. It is not uncommon for guards and inmates to fall for eachother, it's also understandable that it can happen. But this, this would just be a different level. I hope she lives to tell her story because this doesn't make any sense. MOO

"We are following up on a couple of leads but nothing solid to report tonight," Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton says regarding search for missing Vicki White and Casey Cole White. No relation.
@WAAYTV

I wonder if they actually have nothing solid to report or if they just don't want to tip them off.

I will say it's good the FBI, Secret Service, and US Marshals are involved because I don't have much confidence in the Lauderdale County Sheriffs Office when they just let a capital murder inmate waltz out the door for a fake appointment. MOO.

I wonder if the sheriff even has all of the latest updates....with a high likelihood of local LE collusion in this case, I would think the Feds are running the show almost 100%. They would arguably be more objective. MOO and all that...

That's kind of funny. Who exactly is "We"? You know the FBI has cut the sheriff out of this investigation entirely because he is now a subject of this investigation, too. As are all the other deputies that work there. jmo

I'm having trouble piecing together why CW was even at that jail. According to this article, CW wanted to stay at the Lauderdale County jail, but the judge ordered him back to prison after the shiv incident back in 2020. So why was he even there? Did they even send him back to prison as the judge ordered? If they did, how/when did he get back there?

Oct 2, 2020:

"We got information yesterday that he had made a shank and he intended to escape today and take a hostage,” said Lauderdale County District Attorney, Chris Connolly.

He says that they found two shanks in the shower belonging to white before the arraignment. During the arraignment, White pleaded not guilty to both charges by reason of insanity.

The judge also released him back into the custody of the Department of corrections where he was in prison for a string of other unrelated charges.

“Our deputies did a great job. Found the shank and eliminated that threat this morning so we obviously aren’t equipped to house somebody like that for that long term in our jail so we are happy that the judge ordered him to go back to the department of corrections,” said Connolly."

I thought I read that he was there temporarily since it was conviently located to a (real) hearing he was scheduled to attend.... but yes it's a bit confusing.

It's even more confusing (if that's even possible) because on the Alabama Department of Corrections website, he is listed as an inmate at the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility, which obviously isn't accurate.

In Close Custody at that:

Close: The most restrictive custody level to which an inmate can be assigned. Inmates in this custody will be housed in a single cell in a close security institution. Movement outside the housing area requires that the inmate be restrained and accompanied by armed correctional personnel in accordance with Administrative Regulations and Standard Operating Procedures.

And he isn't even there!

Yikes. The Lauderdale Co. Sheriffs Office and the Alabama DOC are going to have a lot of explaining to do because this situation wouldn't have happened if there weren't systemic failures. MOO.

The sheriff said in a CNN interview that he was there because he was getting charged for the Ridgefield murder which was in their county. I can't find the interview in whole, but it is referenced in this story on the interview:
Casey White, 38, is a state prisoner serving 75 years for a crime spree he committed in Limestone County in 2015, Singleton said. He was being held at the detention center in Lauderdale County, in the state's northwest corner, for hearings related to a 2015 homicide in which he has been charged.

The Alabama DOC still hasn't even listed him as escaped yet. There's only one inmate on the escaped list. And it isn't CW.

ETA: Oh, wow. The guy who escaped on 4/23/22 walked away from work release. He was doing 99 years for murder.

If they were traveling in an RV driven by someone else, they could remain unseen.

The question then becomes, who? It doesn't seem like VW has any close family (at least that we know of) and CW has been in prison since 2015 so his contact with his 'outside' friends/family has been severely limited and closely monitored (although maybe not given the lack of oversight at the Lauderdale Co. jail) so coordinating with them would be a challenge.
