I imagine LE are deep into the investigation ... retrieving bank records, cell phone data, gps from VW personal vehicle, reviewing the status of any social media accounts, interviewing co-workers, friends and family ... somebody knows something! And it's just a matter of time before they are caught - even if they are holed up somewhere safe, they will eventually need supplies. LE will be hot on this case ... before CW kills someone else. I believe we will hear soon that they have either found them, or someone has encountered them, and is hopefully still alive to tell about it. Moo
This is a lawyer question and I have no idea, but what happens if you break someone out of prison and they hurt or kill someone? Are you on the hook for that? Accessory to murder? Negligent homicide? Would you get additional jail time on top of the jail time for the jail break?

Is she going to be in serious trouble if he hurts someone??

I am not a lawyer but ... she had to be seriously aware that he is capable of killing someone, maybe anyone. Moo

Re: The question about whether she helped him willingly or was coerced.

Wondering, coerced how? He was behind bars. Difficult to imagine how Vicki would have been physically coerced.
So psychologically? Is there family? Threats, by means of this man's contacts on the outside?
Blackmail? Something he knew about her?

No-one speaking up about her well being....have family and friends been advised to stay quiet? Either by LE or this inmate?

Or, as stated above, she might be a loner.

Hard to imagine that someone in law enforcement, with experience "who has been with the sheriff’s office for 25 years", and at 56 years old, would fall for this 38 year old creep's romantic advances and promises.
I know, but remember this case? ‘Shawskank’ Joyce Mitchell seen with husband in first photos since release

It is mystifying to any level headed person as to why a person would get sucked in by a killer. Like the women who marry a convicted killer????? Maybe VW believed he was innocent and/or she could "save" him????

Or maybe she was at a very vulnerable period in her life, needing connection and attention, and this Casey killer caught on to that, and gave her that attention. I dunno.

2013 Ford Taurus police car.

Edit: "The 2013 Ford Taurus patrol car the corrections official used to transport the inmate was found at about 11 a.m. CDT at a shopping center in Florence, AL.com reported."

Sheriff: Evidence points toward Alabama corrections officer helping murder suspect escape
Not to be too morbid, but I sure hope LE has checked the trunk of that patrol car

Even if VW willingly helped him escape, he might not keep her around for long -- maybe only as long as needed for him to get out and have some cash, a set of civilian clothes and a travel plan in place (available vehicle or bus ticket, etc)

Having worked in a prison (way back in the 90's) I don't understand the logistics of this kind of thing. How do these guards/prisoners find the time to spend together having heart-to-heart talks and "falling in love"? Especially alone. It's not like sitting in a cafe chit-chatting. It's jail. There is little to no privacy or time for this kind of thing. They should be asking the other inmates what was going on with these two. If anyone knows, they will.

I wonder if she was calling him when she was off duty? Burner phone or something?

I've never understood that, either! My knowledge of prison is from movies, so may not be accurate, LOL. Thinking of the "Orange is the New Black" series where a male guard had a sexual affair with a female inmate and got her pregnant (I seem to recall they used a broom closet for their encounters?), I guess it can happen if the person is not always in their cell. If they're on kitchen duty or some kind of duty with guards interacting... but still, I totally agree with you. There's no privacy, or at least shouldn't be. Might be one thing to have a quick you-know-what but to PLAN something like this?

I gotta say, I'm "shocked", too. What is going on at that facility that allows a correctional officer to just waltz out with any inmate they like? I worked in corrections years ago and there is no way I could have gotten a capital murder inmate (or any inmate for that matter) through the sally port without a bunch of pieces of paper. It's not like we were allowed to just take the inmates out of their cells, walk them out of the facility, put them in a car, and just drive off.

This is not a case of one CO violating policy - a whole bunch of them did. IMO

Unbelievable.
I'm also confused as to why a single individual would be assigned to transport a prisoner. That can't be a safe practice right?

Vicki White (also spelled 'Vicky') has training in inmate mental health.

In 2016, Vicky was quoted in an AL.com article about a hands-on experiment where she wore an earpiece to understand what it like for inmates with severe mental health issues: "it's hard to concentrate on what you're supposed to be doing," she told the paper.

In 2017, minutes of the Lauderdale County Commission show that she and other members of the Sheriffs Department attended the National Institute of Corrections Inmate Behavior Management conference in Aurora, CO.

I can't help but wonder if the psychosis-simulating exercises and all of the talk about "jail is not where these people need to be" had some kind of effect on her.

It was definitely against their rules, but there was one news article today—I think it’s the one that gives a timeline—where there wasn’t another qualified deputy available. (Did she do the scheduling?) So since he needed to keep that (nonexistent) appointment, off they went! Grrr!

Here's a recent CNN article and it floors me that a "policy was put in place" to always have 2 sworn deputies (not sure what that means) with him. Huh? So previous policies were "one is enough"???

Also thought I read upthread that she claimed she was the only deputy who was legally able to carry a weapon? I'm not using the correct terms, but that's how I interpreted it. Don't they all carry weapons???

Alabama authorities searching for an inmate and the corrections officer who removed him from jail - CNN

Quote from article above:

Corrections officer knew the protocol on prisoner transport
Casey White, 38, is a state prisoner serving 75 years for a crime spree he committed in Limestone County in 2015, Singleton said. He was being held at the detention center in Lauderdale County, in the state's northwest corner, for hearings related to a 2015 homicide in which he has been charged.

In 2020, Casey intended to escape and take a person hostage but his plan was discovered, the sheriff said. A policy was put in place mandating that two sworn deputies should be with him at all times, including during transportation to court, he said.

Vicki White coordinates all transports from the detention center to court and therefore knew the protocol, the sheriff said.

No one assigned her to transport the inmate anywhere. She took it upon to herself to go to the booking officer and request the inmate be handed over to her for transport for a mental health evaluation at the court house (there was no such appointment).

Why the booking officer cooperated in this is a whole other question. I imagine that person is currently suspended. Or should be. This should never have happened and I imagine the sheriff is having a terrible day, too, and having to answer serious questions about the way he's been running that jail. imo

Also thought I read upthread that she claimed she was the only deputy who was legally able to carry a weapon? I'm not using the correct terms, but that's how I interpreted it. Don't they all carry weapons?
.
I think there were other deputies that carried guns but they were out transferring other prisoners. It makes me wonder if Vicki planned this to happen when she knew the other COs would be occupied.

I get how relationships can start in prison. In the case of Sweat and Matt they both worked in the prison sewing room. There was alone time with Tilly. Now Jail would be a different story. Not like there would be long term programs for short term prisoners. Seems like a very lax jail for this to happen.IMO

Two transport vans had just left 20 minutes prior (one with 7 inmates, the other with 5) bound for the courthouse. VW waited until they left and then approached the booking officer and requested CW. It's no mystery why she was the only qualified deputy left. She waited until all the others were gone.

If CW had a hearing or evaluation at the court house he would have been transported with the other 12 in one of the two transport vans that left for the court house that morning.

The timeline was posted earlier in the thread, by @sds71, I think.

I suspect something has not been right here for a while. Normally when a police officer or prison official is taken hostage or kidnapped by a violent criminal other officers, friends, family loudly express concern via social media, press conferences and other statements.

Here, we have zero of that. Nothing. Which is terribly strange. jmo
Because she wasn't kidnapped IMO.

Certainly the force that can make people do the craziest, most out of character things is love (or perhaps lust).
