Homewood pastor Richard Shahan expected to return to Jefferson County today

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - Homewood minister Richard Shahan is expected to return to Jefferson County some time on Wednesday.

Shahan will be transported from Tennessee to the Jefferson County Jail after he waived extradition during a hearing on Tuesday in Nashville. Shahan is charged with murder in the summer slaying of his wife, Karen Louise Shahan.
Clipped from the article you posted:

"The 53-year-old Shahan was arrested by Homeland Security agents at the Nashville airport on New Year's Day as he was attempting to board a plane to Germany, Homewood Police Chief Jim Roberson said during a news conference last week. Exact details as to why Shahan was charged at this point in the investigation are still limited. The arrest warrant charging Shahan won't be made public until he is formally served the papers."

Yes, that's the response I just got on Twitter too.

@XXXX He has to be served the papers first. Not likely it will reveal much though

I agree, we won't know much from those papers. The Police Chief said as much in his press conference, imo.

Unless his attorneys start leaking stuff, I doubt we will know much until a trial, if there is one.

Welcome LaurelC

Thank you.

This case has been distressing to me and my husband, since we knew Richard and Karen a number of years ago when they were at a different church. Kahne and Pastorpk, we just want you to know we've been praying for you all and FBC. What you are going through must be magnitudes greater.

I do have some thoughts and questions, but I'll save those for another post.

I can ditto the above comment, as I worked with him many years ago in another church as well. I just found out about this whole drama on Friday.
My question is, did anyone at the church know about his planned mission trip before November? Was it discussed or advertised around VBS?
I don't want to make any assumtuous opinions on my question, but maybe I could ask this...was Karen aware that he was planning this trip? Surely she was. And when? Was she an advocate for the trip and BMI?

Would like to know that as well. Was she planning on going with him for three years? That's a long time to be separated from your spouse.

Let's stay on topic folks and not get into discussions about other cases that have nothing to do with this one.

UPDATE: Homewood murder suspect Richard Shahan has been returned to Alabama, and is now in the Jefferson County Jail.

I agree...

Karen's assessment of this situation could be critical to the case...

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - Homewood pastor Richard Shahan said nothing as he was escorted into the Jefferson County Jail Wednesday afternoon, the first step in facing charges that he fatally stabbed his wife.

Shahan, 53, arrived in Jefferson County from Tennessee just after 3 p.m. He stared straight ahead as he was taken in for booking. Jail officials said he will be held in protective custody for his own safety while awaiting classification and cell assignment. He is being held without bond.

Pastor charged with murder is on way to Alabama
An Alabama Baptist minister arrested New Year’s Day while trying to leave the country has been released from jail in Nashville, Tenn., and is on his way to Alabama to face charges of murdering his wife at the couple’s home in July.

The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office online inmate database reported that 53-year-old Richard Shahan, admitted to jail at 10:53 p.m. on Jan. 1, was released at 12:04 p.m. on Jan. 8. He is now in custody of authorities in Jefferson County, Alabama, where he is expected to arrive later today.

From your link:

“At my suggestion early on he received a written statement from his legal counsel that in their opinion he was free to leave/return to the USA,” Carter told the Alabama Baptist. “He was not fleeing; he was en route to assume a new position as a missionary.”

How "early on"? Again, why leave when someone has murdered your wife? IMO, I would be staying and doing all I could to help bring the person to justice.

The dates of the VBS were only 3 days before the murder. If one is not a member of an SBC chuch, then you would not know that VBS (as big and elaborate as it was) is always one of the largest events of the year, and RS was totally in charge of it. It's all downhill for the rest of the year for RS as far as any major events...he's finished with the big responsibilities after VBS. Seems if K was opposed to the preparation for the move...it might have been around that time. I think this is very important to this thread.

"We hope this arrest will bring some closure to family of Karen Shahan," Roberson said….

I found this 'standard' comment by Homewood Police Chief Jim Roberson interesting. I would have thought a comment like ‘we are sorry for the family that things turned out this way’ would have been more appropriate. Or no comment about the family at all.

Unless the family suspected Shahan of Karen’s murder and wanted it dealt with? Maybe his son(s) could not support Shahan’s timeline of his visit to them. And/or saw other signs that something was very off.

I would have thought that the arrest of your father/brother/son/uncle for the alleged murder of your mother/sister/daughter/aunt would open a whole other can of worms, both emotionally and practically, not provide any real closure.

<modsnip> I have only noticed public comments by the church, LE, and attorneys.

I also wonder if Shahan’s cell phone activity supports his version of where he was during the estimated time of Karen’s murder.

Authorities said that Shahan told investigators that he was in Bowling Green, KY when his wife's body was found.

Bowling Green, KY or Fort Campbell? Not all that close.

Shahan's attorneys say they plan to file a motion for a bond hearing sometime this week.
