LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) – The man accused of killing Little Rock real estate agent Beverly Carter will represent himself in court.

Arron Lewis made the formal request Wednesday morning in court to represent himself and terminate his lawyer, Jim Hensley. After discussing the decision with the judge, he was granted his request.

Lewis is considered fit to stand trial. His next appearance will be June 1.

Crystal Lowery's next court appearance will be July 7 at 8:30 a.m. The court intends to try Lewis before Lowery.

CL... plea dealing???

Ok, if someone chooses (demands) to represent themselves in court, does that mean that they give up their right to appeal on the grounds that their lawyer didn't do a proper job, if they are found guilty? It should...but you know how things go. If so, then it's a good thing he's housing to route. One less thing for him to appeal on if he's found guilty.

Update (March 4):

LITTLE ROCK, AR - A pre-trial hearing date in Pulaski County Circuit Court has been set for June 1 for accused killer Arron Lewis.

Lewis, 34, of Jacksonville faces charges of capital murder and kidnapping in the September death of local realtor Beverly Carter, 50.

In court this morning, Judge Herbert Wright allowed Lewis to fire his public defender Jim Hensley and act as his own attorney in the case.

Reporter Shannon Miller says in making the request, Lewis cited a lawsuit he won against Benton County as legal experience.

Also in court this morning was Lewis' estranged wife, Crystal Lowery, 41. She is also facing charges of capital murder and kidnapping in the death of Carter.

The realtor disappeared after telling family she was heading to an appointment to show a home in Scott.

What's the old saying.. something like A man who represents himself has a client for a fool?
Tho I would be upset if my lawyer was suppose to be at the eval and wasn't, then didn't get my paperwork for transfer filed until the day of court (feb 26th). Considering the charges, this isn't anything like he has been up against and unless he has some solid evidence of something... Well he just a fool, no matter what. Looks like the court clerk will start getting motions left and right. Cue the circus music.

He will start leaking info, or his version soon. 10,9,8,7........

Holeeee canolli!

I may just have to drive over to LR to witness this myself. I bet Mr Hensley is glad to be done with him! BUT! Won't this just give him grounds for an appeal later when it turns out he sucks as a lawyer? As much potential as this has to be entertaining, I hate to see this turned into a circus and then watch this clown skate on some technicality.

I hope CL makes a plea agreement in exchange for her testimony. As much as she's tried to play the complete innocent in all this, I still feel that she knows WAY more than she's let on and possibly helped him try to cover it up. I would love to see her finally do the right thing and tell what she knows so the Carter family can have some peace.

She wouldn't be able to plea, with out knowing some pretty hard hitting stuff and therefore some involvement I would think. They charged her with the same charges, and had a month to build on charging her, whereas they charged AL right away. JMHO

Just my opinion: I think she helped him dispose of the body and/or evidence. Time will tell.

It actually speeds things up without the death penalty on the table. I think the family just wants this all to end so they can move on. I don't know them, it's just my opinion. Or maybe they don't believe in the death penalty. I am against the death penalty as being locked up forever in a tiny cell would be miserable enough. And too many people have been executed that were innocent. It's not been proven to deter crime either.

It appears to me that they didn't give the media a chance to shout questions to him or CL as they have in the past. He thrives on the attention, so I hope they escorted him in and out without access to the media. I haven't seen any video show up yet.

I agree. They didn't go for the DP in Anne Pressley death either, and it was equally horrible. Most on death row, wont ever meet their sentence. I think they should have hard labor in prison doing their time. JMHO and the whole commissary $, that should be an earned privilege. JMO

I've been wondering if they kept the media away from him, because they had video of CL up almost immediately. I bet that really pissed him off! LOL

Does this mean he is now free to call whatever witnesses he wants and he can question them himself? If the theory that he is going to go with the "wait until you see what the good girl did" story turns out to be correct, I *really* hate this for the Carter family! He has nobody (ie: his lawyer) to put a muzzle on him.

(disclaimer no legal education) He could/would call the same witnesses with a lawyer. He also can and will do depositions of all the Pros witnesses... so that he knows what they will testify to in court and/or use to impeach the witness. (as will the Pros depose the def witnesses). And AL has the right not to testify on his own behalf. I still out on if he is cocky enough to not do that. All his other legal cases, he has made plea deals.

So how does it work him doing this Pro Se, who pays for the depositions and so forth, that would normally be paid for by the Public Defenders office?

ETA: I think (just from following other trials) just because AL wants to bring up there are legal test that have to be passed and Relevance will be one. We don't know yet what he "has" as his defense, although not hard to guess.

LOL that was fast Arron Lewis has Returned from Out to Court Status, and returned to the ADOC.
