Damned if they do, damned if they don't. I think they handled the situation professionally, under the circumstances. While I wish they didn't release the video/images, I understand why they did, and I absolutely respect how they did it. They compromised with the media. Found a middle ground to give them what they want, while avoiding a circus.

I, for one, appreciate their efforts to remain respectful to EVERYBODY in this case, from the victim, to the media, to the general public, and even the accused. It has been most professional.

This was posted earlier but important to share again as it focuses on the victim's family,

From the Canadian Press:
Lawyers intend to take special care of Lin’s family

http://www.canada.com/health/Lawyers+intend+take+special+care+family/6811076/story.html

Lin, who was brutally killed and dismembered last month in Montreal, was a Chinese national studying computer science at Concordia University.

The 33-year-old’s family has been in the city since arriving from China about two weeks ago.

“My colleague and I really want them to believe in our justice system and we’ll do our best to reassure them that we’ll work very, very hard in this case,” Di Salvo said Tuesday at the Montreal courthouse, following Magnotta’s first Canadian court appearance since his arrest in Germany earlier this month.

“It’s the beginning of a very, very long year or two years, so we’ll try to help them (get) through this.”

From Paris Match:

Magnotta plaide non-coupable

Article is written in French. It would be awesome if someone fluent in French might share their thoughts on this article; sometimes Google translate doesn't give the full effect/understanding that a native speaker can provide.

Google Translate doesn't always give the full effect/understanding even for somebody who can read some French, and can generally un-jumble and decode the translated version. It isn't always correct. As for any language, context is everything, and while something written may translate directly to one thing, a proper, human translation may show that it means something completely different.

Canada really needs to improve its French language education! It is our official second language. We should all speak it fluently! :rocker:

Thank you for the links, by the way :)

G'Morning everyone! (Bonjour tout le monde!) Well here we are again in the continuing drama of LRM.

I feel badly for the police in Montreal having to deal with this dude. Must be horrible. :jail:

Wonder if he'll go for the insanity thing. I doubt it as I truly believe he wants everyone to know that he's a monster on this earth.

:maddening:

VIDEO NEWS REPORT

From the Toronto Sun Television:
It's all theatre for Magnotta
http://vancouver.24hrs.ca/video/1697424329001

Toronto Sun columnist Joe Warmington looks back on his 2007 interview with accused cannibal killer Luka Magnotta, and reacts to his plea of not guilty.

I didn't know Justin is French-Canadian. The only Canadian I know by that name is Justin Bieber lol. I also haven't seen any jokes at all about Jun Lin, but I may have missed a lot since I've been in my office a lot (dash them all -- do they not know I've got far more pressing postings to attend?!)

Just an o/t aside, I believe that my ancestry is quite French-Canadian. The surname on my mom's side is DeGraw, and all of the girls in my grandmother's generation have French names. I'd forgotten about that until you posted about the name Justin. So maybe Canada really is my motherland!

eta: but can you at least call me Sally? :)

It's not. Just because it's a popular name, the origin is not French Canadian.

I'll provide a link.

fwiw....his fb page (the ones who organized the vigil) and friends at Concordia University also know him as Patrick.

Ironically, I was thinking about justice for Jun Lin and wanted to post a question for the legal experts here but I think I answered my own question. lol

I wanted to know if the accused murderer could be extradited to China but realized because China has Capital Punishment, I don't believe a Canadian citizen can face justice over there. Too bad. Jun Lin was Chinese citizen and IMO, justice should be served where the victim is from.:moo:

No, it should be served where the crime is committed. Anything else would lead to madness and confusion, not to mention open season on victims from countries where the justice system is in chaos.

The Canadian courts are well able to deal with the likes of Luka Magnotta. And I don't believe he will enter an insanity plea either, nor that it would work if he did enter one.

I'm seeing fewer and fewer sources labelling him a *advertiser censored* "star" and more calling him a *advertiser censored* "actor". It's about time. That will be my happy thought for the day.

I'm reading several posters describing Lin Jun as lonely. IMO we should be careful to not distort or create caricaturs without enough facts. Lin Jun comes from a very different culture and there are apparently differences that would discourage his friends from stepping forward to speak. No doubt what little reports are out there of Lin Jun are positive...describing him repeatedly as a "nice guy", "happy", "hard working", "good student". I am not sure where the evidence is that he was "lonely". Apparently he had a lot of friends. He was interested in finding a longterm relationship but that doesn't make him necessarily lonely. He may have missed China at times, but that's not lonely, its homesick. IMO he likely met LM on some Craigslist post or in passing. Lin Jun appears to have been a more openly trusting personality. Caring. He probably assumed (in error) that LM was decent enough and due to the cultural differences may have not as readily picked up on the creepy cues, instead misreading it as cultural difference. Predatory types are often very careful and some exquisitly able to indentify empathic type persons and then use that goodness from another to lead them to their demise. It is perhaps that concept that rattles us all a little bit. Could we have been Lin Jun in another circumstance whereby we empathized or showed compassion to another who would intend us grave harm. It creates an inner conflict, do we fore go the basic good human trait of compassion/empathy or risk grave danger on infrequent occasion. IMO there is no real decision. A life without compassion/empathy is worse then death. So the risk I must face, but I can do so by using screening tools to assist in weeding out the most dangerous. It will never guarantee my safety at all times, but it will certainly increase it. Below is a link to an article that discusses Lin Jun...and some of the cultural differences as to why his friends aren't talking to the press..

Excellent post! The thanks button wasn't enough!

If he had not appeared in a few pornographic videos, would he be referred to as an "unemployed 29 year old"?

I agree... I did a comparison of his alleged abuse photo with his Berlin mugshot and IMO his nose, particularly the rounded end is very different.

FootballMom, thank you for this before-after comparison, awesome!
I'd love to be sure about how many surgeries Magnotta went through , he claimed so many on the plastic addict reality show video. Nosejob, hair transplant, under eye bags surgery etc
I keep thinking if they really happened or he fabricated?
Did he ever for once told the real truth or always had to exaggerate or lie?
I know this is unrelated to the murder but it makes me wonder about his personality. I wish I could find pictures of him from around 17 to 20 years old, I've only found from his school yearbooks

I think the word you're looking for is matriotism -- what with the Queen and all

'k'k...I'll stop now :)

Ahahahaha! That reminds me of an episode of "House" where Dr. House calls one of his interns a "Brit" to which the intern replies he is not English, but Aussie.

House then says "You've got the Queen on your money, nuff said" or words to that effect!

Funnier still that the American character of House is played by British Hugh Laurie! :D
