Testimony From Key Casey Witness Could Be Falling Apart

Updated: 6:50 pm EST November 17, 2010
http://www.wftv.com/news/25830173/detail.html

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Testimony from one of Casey Anthony's key witnesses may be falling apart. Casey's lawyers were hoping to use EquuSearch volunteer Laura Buchanan to show Casey couldn't have put Caylee's body where it was found.

Buchanan showed up Wednesday for a second round of questioning under oath by prosecutors after calling in sick last time and then getting a new lawyer. Now, she's under investigation by the Orange County Sheriff's Office for allegedly faking a document claiming she and other volunteers searched right where Caylee Anthony's remains were found three months earlier, and found nothing.

Buchanan is also accused by another volunteer of using the bogus report to try to convince him to go along with her story.

Funding For DNA Tests Granted In Casey Case

The 1:30pm hearing lasted a little over 10 minutes.
The defense had asked the judge for permission to use an out-of-state lab to conduct DNA tests on a laundry bag and some shorts found with Caylee's remains.
But at Thursday's hearing, Judge Belvin Perry granted the defense motion.

"The fees which are announced, which are a little more than $2,000 and change, is not an exorbitant amount of money and therefore the court will grant the motion for DNA testing at the figures placed in the motion," Judge Belvin Perry ruled Thursday afternoon (watch full hearing).

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The latest moves by Casey Anthony's defense team show that lawyers are hoping to use science to raise reasonable doubt about who put Caylee Anthony's remains in the woods.

A year ago, Anthony's defense produced statements from Texas EquuSearch volunteers Laura Buchanan and Joe Jordan that indicated there was nothing in the area off of Suburban Drive where Caylee Anthony's remains were later found.

Jordan later told detectives that was not his claim, and a source with knowledge of Buchanan's recent sworn deposition said her statement has changed as well.

"The defense seems willing to rely on questionable witnesses and incredible people to try to save Anthony's life, and in the end it's only going to do her more harm than good," Hornsby said.

The source told WESH 2 News that a recent deposition of meter reader Roy Kronk's son, Brandon Sparks, was not helpful to defense efforts to paint Kronk as a potential suspect.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Casey Anthony's defense team said on Monday it has more than a dozen new witnesses that support the claim Anthony did not place her daughter's remains in the woods.

Defense attorneys said they have 15 to 20 people who searched the exact area where Caylee Anthony's remains were found but found no body.
Defense attorney Cheney Mason said the names of the witnesses will be given to Judge Belvin Perry on Friday.

For the first time on Monday, Anthony defense attorney Jose Baez acknowledged his team may put off a motion to introduce evidence that the man who found the remains, Roy Kronk, should have been considered a suspect in the case.
Perry warned Baez that he should make up his mind about the motion soon.

Also, the defense wants the state commission that monitors its spending to approve a higher rate for copies of deposition transcripts.

Also, Judge Belvin Perry will hear a request from Jose Baez to be reimbursed for the cost of flying his team of experts to Central Florida in July to review evidence.

The costs run into the thousands of dollars, but no specific amount was given.

At Tuesday's hearing, Baez will also ask the court to fund more hours for defense investigators to continue their work.

It was not immediately known whether Anthony will attend Tuesday afternoon's hearing, but court records show her defense team has been given permission to participate over the phone as will lawyers for the state agency that distributes money to indigent clients.

Perry Gives Casey Anthony Defense More Investigative Hours

Anthony defense attorney Jose Baez requested 300 additional hours, saying that that the hours that had already been granted by Perry had been exhausted.
Perry pointed to at least one invoice, saying that he believes some of the costs that have been invoiced may not be reimbursable under the JAC's guidelines. The JAC said the invoices had not yet been gone through in detail.

Perry ended up saying the defense could have 110 hours to use after the JAC determined how many hours the defense had gone over its allotment. In other words, the defense will have 100 hours to use moving forward.
Perry also heard a motion from the defense asking for reimbursement of experts' travel expenses.
Perry replied that he would not issue an order without seeing exactly how much money Baez was requesting reimbursement for.

I have certain concerns about how the investigator is being utilized," Perry told defense attorney Jose Baez. "Some of those things can be done by a paralegal or a secretary."
He specifically noted collection of public records, attendance at defense team meetings and requests for public records as examples of what "more than likely will not be reimbursable costs."

George's Alleged Mistress Reveals Details In Casey Case

Posted: 7:34 am EST December 17, 2010Updated: 7:43 pm EST December 17, 2010

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Evidence released Friday unveiled new details about the secrets in Casey Anthony's family. Who really is Caylee's father? And George Anthony's alleged mistress told investigators all she knew about the case against Casey.
Her real name is Krystal Holloway, but says she created a new name, River Cruz, and a whole new life to escape her past. She said even George didn't know.

"OK. Do you know why he threw her against the wall and choked her?" Sgt. John Allen asked.

"Because he said, 'I know you killed her. What did you do to her?' And he choked her and Cindy had to get George off of, off of Casey.

"How do you know this?" Allen asked.

"He told me," she said.

Holloway told detectives George wanted to throw Casey out of the house when she was back home after bailing out of jail.

"Because it was too many lies," Holloway told investigators.

But she says George then lied to investigators and to the public about someone else murdering Caylee.

"He didn't want to have to lose his other kid. He lost one," she said.

Holloway also told investigators Casey's brother Lee knows she killed Caylee.

"Because George said his son does not understand why," Holloway told investigators.

Judge Holds Off On Ruling On Casey Witness List
Updated: 2:01 pm EST December 20, 2010

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Casey Anthony was in court Monday afternoon where her lawyers fought to keep the witness list in the death penalty phase of the trial from being made public.

After about 15 minutes of each side stating their case, including an attorney with the Orlando Sentinel, Judge Belvin Perry said he was reserving ruling for a later time.

The defense previously failed to get Judge Perry to seal its death penalty witness list by order, so Monday Casey's lawyers tried to make convincing arguments to keep that list secret from the public.

The defense says some of Casey's relatives in Ohio and others, who have known her and her family since she was a child, don't want to help her stay off death row if she's convicted of murdering her daughter, Caylee Anthony, because they don't want to be contacted or covered by the media.

NOTE @ 20:06 minutes, Judge Perry questions the Defense Motion to abandon Roy K. and the admission of bad acts. Judge Perry wants it prior to 12/31/10.(correction by 23rd)

Also details about Dr. Lee which follows, payment for travel...still pending. ( (does anyone recall Dr. Lee saying he could work for a crate of oranges if he chose )

Entomologist Deposed In Case Against Casey
Updated: 5:33 pm EST December 28, 2010

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- An expert working for Casey Anthony's defense team was questioned under oath Tuesday. Dr. Tim Huntington is an entomologist, which is a bug expert.

Dr. Huntington may have tried to convince jurors there were no coffin flies in the trunk of Casey's car. According to court documents filed by Casey Anthony's defense, that's one thing he planned to say.

Prosecutors conducted a Skype video deposition with Dr. Huntington, who is a board certified entomologist from Nebraska.

Huntington's role will be to discredit scientific methods used by experts for the prosecution. Defense attorneys will hope it casts doubt in the minds of jurors that Casey killed her daughter.

DEFENSE NO LONGER LOOKING AT KRONK AS SUSPECT

The man who found Caylee Anthony's body in the woods is back to being a hero in the case. It looks like the defense abandoned its claims that Roy Kronk should be a suspect instead.

In an attempt to cast doubt on Kronk's damaging testimony, the defense said he should be a suspect and got people in Kronk's past to make disturbing accusations against him.

The defense had until December 23 to ask Chief Judge Belvin Perry to bring those accusations against Kronk into the trial so a jury could hear them. It didn't happen.

"The defense was floating balloons to see how this shift of focus from Casey to Kronk would play out. It did not play out well at all. It backfired," WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer said.
