I also can't figure out why DH would list one of his aliases along with his real name (for all to find in a simple ABN search). Can anyone suggest a benefit to doing that?

That's real sharp thinking. Police had Karlie's dental work examined, but they found no matching records. Why?
But how did the killer know that she wouldn't be found soon after dumping her. How did he know she wouldn't be identified by dental records? How did forensics mess up big time, stating that the victim would have been in Australia only for a short time.
If she had been identified, for sure identity fraud would have come to light and CCTV of bank transactions etc. would have been on crime stoppers and in the press. And the person that would have been using her identity after she must already have been dead, would have to have an incredible story.
That part really stumps me as well. The dental work led investigators searching for a backpacker of European origins. The body was poorly concealed in Milat family hunting grounds famous for killing backpackers. Why does Karlie who has lived in Australia her whole life have European dental work. This was a major factor in her not being identified. The reconstructed drawing was probably affected by that assumption as well. Why WAS the killer so confident she wouldn't be identified? Were they just extremely lucky?
I guess with Karlie these people at least knew she hadn't been reported missing so far and with her transient history they could claim she'd just gone off on her own.
Yeah, wel that's why I don't understand the identity fraud. By keep using her identity, they couldn't say she just left and they never heard form her again.
I guess they were desperate for the money they could get of her.
If I stomped on your skull, it would be flat as a pancake
The coroner may have had several pieces of skull in her hands. Media doesnt state specifically whether the skull was whole to it may have been in several pieces
I don't understand how that's even possible. An alias is simply a fake name isn't it? Isn't that illegal?
So either he gave his fake name. Or the ABN people have thought of it as 2 people running a business together?
BBM I agree that this type of violence is characteristic of outlaw bikie gangs. I wouldn't be surprised if there are connections.
Judging by what I've witnessed in Alice the vast majority of the medical fraternity are from overseas. Likely the dental fraternity too. Few Aussies find it an attractive career option it seems. She probably never had any dental work done by an Australian dentist using Australian techniques .

I don't think it was the dentistry that made them think she was foreign, it was the isotope analysis.
"Detectives had made enquiries with dentists local to the Southern Highlands in the hope dental comparisons might help to identify the female, but had so far been unsuccessful.
“The female’s teeth show signs of dental work typical of Western dentistry and commonly carried out in Australia, but so far we’ve been unable to match them with dental records,” he said."

I assume they found no matching records because Karlie's dental records were not put forward as she was not officially a missing person at that time. I don't think DH and co are the sharpest tools in the shed and even seemingly intelligent people have killed and disposed of people they KNOW will be missed and they can be directly linked to, such as spouses or children. I guess with Karlie these people at least knew she hadn't been reported missing so far and with her transient history they could claim she'd just gone off on her own.
but then why go and use her card? Doesn't make sense, even if you are a few kegs short of a party.
He was required to present proof of identification and required an ABN for his work. He has had to change according his workplace etc. Submitting an invoice to an employer in the ACT stating you are in Alice Springs wouldnt look good.
The ATO is onto all of this with some pretty fancy powers of search.
Someone said baker.
This appears someone was working for someone else. ATO will be interested because you cant be a labourer on an ABN. There is no contract business as such.
A 1986 Commodore wouldn't have looked in the least odd in 2008. They wouldn't even be noticeable as unusual today. They are common as, well, Commodores.
In addition, remember that Karlie grew up among car fanatics and was undoubtedly one herself since she went to car shows.
She probably knew how to strip down and reassemble a Holden engine before she started school.
Holden parts are cheap and plentiful, so if she did her own mechanical work, then an older Holden is an obvious choice for her to drive on her numerous, long trips.
Easy to maintain, cheap parts, doesn't stand out.
