* the person who reported it saw it Tuesday, tipped it out and examined the contents, then waited until Wednesday to report
* why? don't know (reporter seemed a bit like WHY? about that herself) but she did say it's very remote - who knows, maybe their phone wasn't working/getting signal or something
* people who drive that highway have been seeing that suitcase on the side of the road but driving past it for 6 weeks
* police are there and searching the area and they are stopping people who drive past and asking them questions
* child definitely murdered.

Would they be doing DNA testing? Because there are several missing children referred to early in the thread (plus WT) who could surely be quickly ruled out (or in) as the child if that was done?

Seven news says gender should be known by this afternoon.

I would say definitely. Not only on the child but on all the items to try to find out who did this.

Yes. Superintendent Bray said they were doing DNA testing.

Superintendent Bray said police were not prepared to comment on the other contents of the suitcase but "there was a variety of things inside".
"The child was originally in the suitcase and at some point we believe somebody has removed the child from the suitcase to there," he said.

"It's hard to say what happened, or why, but we know for certain that somebody has come and found the suitcase, opened it to have a look what's in there, tipped out the contents and at that stage become aware that it was most likely human remains."

So is it being said the person that was drawn to something on the side of the road actually stopped on Tuesday, tipped the contents of the suitcase out and examined it and removed the remains and placed them under the bushes. Then on Wednesday contacted the police.

I am thinking I would be in shock if I had made that discovery. I am trying to find a plausible explanation for the delay in reporting.
I am really curious as to what the variety of things were in the suitcase.
I hope what ever they were they help in finding who this poor child is very quickly.

Maybe they thought the bones were from an animal ?

“It’s hard to say what happened and why but somebody has found the suitcase, opened it to have a look what’s in there and tipped out the contents and discovered the human remains,” Det-Supt Bray said.

And they waited to report it?!

9 News report just now: police are wishing to speak to a man seen walking through the town with a suitcase. Clean appearance, approx. 60 yrs old

I'm thinking that as well..... If there was no skull , visible hands and feet, It could have looked like animal bones...

You hardly ever see people using suitcases that don't have wheels these days so it this was an oldfashioned suitcase I imagine it would stand out. I don't know if you can even buy them in shops anymore.

Locals would know if the man was known to them I imagine.

#BREAKING: Police have identified an person of interest in the case of the bones found in #Wynarka.

BREAKING: Detectives want to speak to an elderly man seen in #Wynarka 6-8 weeks ago carrying a big, black suitcase. @7NewsAdelaide

Giving the person who found it the benefit of doubt. Perhaps they didn't want to be involved in anyway, maybe thought someone else would report it, but went home and had a good think about it.

Obviously, whoever dumped it knew it would be found. Of all the places you could hide a body, or ways to dispose a body, a few metres off a highway is sure to be found.

I was thinking the same thing re not much of an attempt to hide it.
But I wonder if before the roadworks there were more bushes etc and that the roadworks made the suitcase more visible than it was.

When they say they have identified a person of interest, do they mean they know who he is ?

from the above article-

He said up to seven people have since told police they had seen the suitcase on the side of the road where police believe it was first placed up to two-and-a-half months ago.

One had dragged the suitcase from the bushes where police had originally believed it dumped and placed it in full sight on the verge.

Others had opened the suitcase, some had even "poked around ... not realising the importance of what was inside".

If that many people had not only seen it but rummaged through it (WT??) it clearly was just dumped. How could that many people look through it and not realise what was in there? The bones obviously aren't clearly identifiable as human, surely? Gah, this is heartbreaking. A poor little baby dumped like freaking rubbish on the side of the road and no one notices. :(

Yet a man walking with a suitcase two months ago is? Humans are weird with what we remember. :gaah:

Wow just imagine the headache trying to get dna from the suitcase and contents.
