Authorities also revealed for the first time Ms Haddad’s cause of death was strangulation.

“It is possible to evidence the death of the victim by mechanical asphyxia by constriction of the neck,” Brazilian police said in the statement.

Mr Santoro is now considered a fugitive in both Australia and Brazil and can be arrested on the spot in either country, according to SBS Portuguese.

This morning the Brazilian Homicide Division confirmed in a statement, translated from Portuguese to English, that police had spoken to Ms Haddad's relatives and issued a warrant for Mr Santoro's arrest.

Mario Marcelo Santoro gave himself up without resistance on Saturday and simply told officers: “I’ve ended my life”.

Ex-lover arrested in Brazil over Sydney murder

This guy gives himself up, AFTER Police surround apartment.
He did not simply, go to Police and 'give himself up'.

As quoted, from above:
AS BRAZILIAN police officers surrounded the apartment where the ex-lover of murdered woman Cecilia Haddad was believed to be hiding, he gave himself up.

On Channel 7, evening news: It was good to see, Santoro, head down, handcuffed, led by Police.
This is just the beginning of his 'walk of shame': years I hope.

On ABC NEWS, this morning, it was stated, Santoro may only get 15 -18 years.
Yikes, is that all!!!

Mario Marcelo Santoro could enjoy up to five years as a free man before facing court over the death of mining executive Cecilia Haddad, whose body was found dumped in Lane Cove River, north of Sydney, in April.

Brazilian homicide police chief Dr Fabio Cardoso said Santoro had been 'swinging between normality and depression' since he was apprehended.

'The police investigating the murder have important information, witness statements, forensic and physical evidence, that will help us build up a case and bring a successful prosecution,' Dr Cardoso said.

'In April, by not accepting the break-up, he (Santoro) allegedly killed her by asphyxiation by pressing her neck and dumping her body in the river,' Mr Cardoso told the Seven Network in Brazil.

Cecilia Haddad's former boyfriend has been charged with her murder after his
arrest in Brazil on the weekend.

Mario Marcelo Santoro, 40, was formally charged with femicide and attempting to conceal a body on Monday night, Rio time.
........
On Sunday night, Ms Haddad's father Jose Ibrahim Haddad jnr told a Brazilian news program that in his last conversation with his daughter in Australia, she said she was scared of Mr Santoro being inside her home when she returned.

"She called me and said 'Dad, stay on the telephone. I am coming home and I don't know if he's already gone. He could have already entered the house. Stay on the phone.'

"I asked her 'where are you?' She said 'I am going up the elevator'."

Ms Haddad then said "You can sleep because everything is OK", according to her father.

Ms Haddad and Mr Santoro lived together in her Ryde apartment, where she was allegedly killed, until she broke up with him in the weeks before her death.

So both her father, and her mother (from previous posts) were aware she was wary of Santoro.

Rereading about Santoro, to prison, I found Cecilia's distraught father's statement:

Formal charges were laid against Santoro as Jose Haddad, Cecilia’s father, gave an emotional interview on Brazilian television on Sunday. Speaking to O Fantastico, Haddad described the last conversation he had with his daughter. “It was April 27th, it was 6.30am here. She called me and said, ‘Dad, stay on the phone, I’m arriving home and I don’t know if he’s left because he might have made a spare key … I’m entering the apartment … I called his name three times, he’s not here. It’s all OK, you can go back to sleep now.’ ” Haddad also spoke about his daughter’s increasing fear of Santoro during the last six months of her life.

It is understood Santoro is now being held in the basement of the homicide division inside a crammed, five-square-metre cell with a ceiling so low that he is unable to stand, the Daily Telegraph reported.

The three men being held with him are also accused of murder; one allegedly killed his wife, another is accused of murdering a policeman and the third is reportedly behind a series of taxi driver deaths.

Police chief Dr Fabio Cardoso revealed Santoro initially was surprised he had been arrested.

‘He had studied the laws and was confident that he would never be extradited, and that police here wouldn’t be able to investigate a crime that happened so far away.
