This is a recurring theme that continues in the news and media about the Claremont murders.
Media play a part & influence the public, They seem shocked, yet there had been attempted abductions,violence and rapes in the area, plenty of pre-cursor attacks. It was not safe. Were the crimes escalating?
Some took notice but many did not...
Would it be any different if it happened now in a similar type of scenario ?
Is it just media who play suprised?,
Could it have been done any better, with hindsight ?

Thanks- I thought perhaps you were referring to another incident more recently. I did see that previously but they referred to that Telstra POI being an ex cop. I figured it was not BRE as surely they tested the DNA of all suspects on their radar over the years.

IMO the 'ex cop' comment was thrown in as a red herring as likely that the Accused was across social media and sleuthing sites. If we consider that POI worked for Telstra, was divorced (or recently separated), lived Mandurah way (perhaps spent time at Madora Bay) - it is a very similar profile to accused. Similar enough to make BRE feel edgy.

Perhaps on breaking up from his recent relationship, the alleged CSK, BRE took to the streets again and was noticed. IMO BRE has been on the radar of WAPOL for quite awhile pre-arrest (since early 2016).

No it’s not just the media that was shocked. I had socialised in the area while a UWA student and post uni days up until a couple of years before Sarah’s disappearance and either worked or lived close by the area at the time of the crimes and ever since.

I had never heard of any of the pre-cursor attacks until well after the three victims disappeared/were murdered, when the pre-cursor attacks were featured in The Post.

However, being a little older than the CSK victims I had lived through the terrorising reign of the Birnie’s in 1986, so personal safety was very high on my and my friend’s agendas. But even still I felt very safe in Claremont. I didn’t go to school in the area I either went with uni friends who did or to see live bands. But most people seemed to be locals who new each other and therefore I guess felt very safe. It wasn’t a huge scene just a quiet suburban area, nothing like Northbridge at the time.

I worked in Subiaco when Sarah disappeared and it was a huge shock. I still remember being on my lunch break and seeing her missing posters plastered everywhere.

I still remember catching the train home from work the day Ciara’s body was found and looking at the guys in my carriage thinking “could it be him or him?

Perth was in shock and gripped in fear. You really had to be there to fully understand how it felt. Jane Marwick’s article captures it the best that I’ve seen.

Perth was such a small place only 1 or 2 degrees of separation. A friend worked with Jane’s Dad (RIP), a relative taught one of the Birnie’s victims and a friend’s sister went to uni with another. The alleged CSK went to my high school a couple of years below me, but no I never knew him.

The talk of death penalties is just more waste of time and energy , it is an option that does not exist thankfully.... Maybe people have had sheltered lives but there is a whole world of people who have had wrongful convictions .. To approve of the state executing people is turning the state into a serial killer ... Killing people is no solution to anything

I have not lead a sheltered life, anything but and I denounce your personal attack. I am fully entitled to my opinion as are you. You will see I don’t make any personal attacks on you. Nor will I try to change your mind but I will voice my opinion.

I am also fully aware of the cases where innocent people have been convicted and I abhor that too. In my opinion, which you can see from my earlier posts, the death penalty should be available for particularly brutal/heinous, multiple and serial murders that have irrefutable scientific proof which was not available in the days of the cases in WA of the wrongful murder convictions of Buttin, Mallard etc. I’ve never said every murder case should be punishable by capital punishment and I’ve always said if there is irrefutable scientific evidence (eg DNA, hair, fibres, fingerprints in the victim’s blood). In my opinion if this type of evidence isn’t available then the sentence should be life in prison without parol (but still with the rights to appeal).

Yes there have been many wrongful imprisonments and while this is terrible I still err on the side of the innocent victims and their families.

As always these are my opinions only and in a civilised society we are lucky to have the freedom to voice our opinions and debate each other who have different opinions.

I think the capital punishment topic was raised because of the new charges being laid for Sarah’s murder and the impending court appearance of the alleged CSK on Wednesday 28th Feb. In my opinion this has re-flamed people’s sadness, shock, fear, anger and passion. And also because of the sub-judice due to the upcoming court appearance, not much about the actual case can be discussed. Also because the whole topic of capital punishment is a very passionate one and most people tend to have very strong views on the somewhat black and white topic - there’s not much of a grey area there.

Absolutely agree Owlie. The only difference is that I did go to school & socialise in the area in the era of the Birnies and beyond & we still felt safe and were shocked by the CSK murders. We didnt hear about all the attacks, simple as that. Jane went to school with 1 possibly 2 of Birnies victims (Im not sure when Kate Moir left school). She lived through that horror up close too. It was a different time to todays world where info is at your fingertips.

Thanks, like I said I felt safe there too and in no way was I intending to blame the victims so I apologise if that’s how it came across. I thought perhaps being a local growing up in the area and knowing almost everyone made it feel even safer. Even in those days Northbridge wasn’t considered ‘totally safe’ but nothing like these days I think.

And yes you’re right info wasn’t at our fingertips like it is today.

What's interesting is that there was a spate of murders which commenced in March 1986. Prior to those, there weren't any for a few years. The murders/abductions continued after the Birnies were in prison.

What could have happened just prior to March 1986?

20/6/1988 Julie Cutler ex Parmelia Hilton hotel Perth after staff function. Car found in surf at Cottesloe 2 days later. Missing.
29/6/1991 Kerry Turner ex Victoria Park dropped of by taxi outside Cafe L'Affair (spelling ?), on way to Armadale. Witnessed getting into car which traveled east towards Midland. Had been to Pinocchio's Nightclub in Perth.
16/5/1992 Radina Djukich ex North Beach. (shockingly) had been handed to known pedophile through court system. Missing. Pedophile subsequently convicted of murder of woman in following year.
13/7/1992 Cariad Slater missing 67a Rosewood Ave Woodlands. Solved man charged and convicted; case going through appeal process. Located in yard he lived in and address where taxi had dropped her off at.

That is an amazing list. Thank you for posting it and to those who compiled it.

Sally Greenham & Kerry Turner interest me with respect to the CSK. The MO - a woman on her own, heading somewhere, late at night, and in Kerry's case having been out somewhere (and Sally could have been mistaken for having done that). From what I've read there is no evidence that any of the CSK victims had partners, which might be just a coincidence but also might be something the CSK knew or came to know.

I think that the CSK (whoever it may be) targeted women in that situation for a couple of reasons:
1. Unlikely to be a flag raised about their whereabouts until the following day. Partner or not, people are less surprised if someone isn't home when they've gone out drinking with friends for a night. In Sally's case, if she had just arrived in Perth and that had been established then it applies to her, too, that no alarm would be raised immediately.
2. The possibility they had been drinking might have made the CSK think they were easier to manipulate or less likely to put up a fight.

I have wondered over the years if the way the CSK captured the women was simply by asking for directions. Strike up a conversation in a non-threatening way, which means the CSK can make them feel comfortable and get to know them a bit.

As a woman who has been in the situation of the three alleged CSK victims - as in heading home on my own after a night out - and in a similar era (I'm slightly younger than Sarah Spiers), I can see how it might go. Walking along or waiting on your own, a car approaches and slows down and you start freaking out, but then the person winds down the window and goes, "Hi there, sorry to bother you, but I'm a bit lost. Do you know how to get........" And you're SO relieved, because you'd thought the person was coming to attack you, and now you know they're not. In fact, the relief is so great that you feel the opposite of suspicious and are even more open and friendly than you would otherwise be.

It's a very easy way to establish a few details about a person as well because they might very well reveal where they are headed, to whom and why. Applying that to Sally Greenham: She has just arrived in town and someone asks her for directions and she says, "Oh well, I don't know anywhere around here as I've just arrived." Bingo! CSK sees an opportunity.

The person could also get out of the car to be shown where you mean without too much suspicion. And then it would be easy with the right tools or drugs or simply greater physical capability to get the victim in the car.

And it's a great cover. If someone was suspicious or started to hurry on or try to gain attention, the CSK could just drive off. Woman says, "He was asking me for directions" and a lot of people would just think she was paranoid. If other people intervened the CSK could stick with the story and it would probably be an entirely forgettable exchange to them afterward. Plus it gives time to assess the surroundings for anyone watching.

It would have been possible in an era pre GPS and Google Maps having widespread use.

You could get a full licence at 17 in 1985 so Dec 85 for full licence, Sept 85 for learners.
