11.10am: Outside court, Daniel Morcombe's parents Bruce and Denise said they were disappointed they could not listen to all of the evidence.

"We look forward to listening to the witnesses' evidence in open court and obviously we're just blocked for the time being," Mr Morcombe said.

"But that's the system we deal with so we march on."

Sandra Drummond, a former friend of the accused, gave evidence today.

She told the court she had known Cowan for about two years and occasionally smoked cannabis with him.

Ms Drummond said there was a possibility that Cowan was with her at her Beerwah home the day Daniel was abducted, but she could not recall the exact details of the day.

Another eight witnesses are giving evidence this week, with six to be heard in a closed-court session.

Daniel Morcombe's accused killer Brett Peter Cowan told undercover police he choked boy in moment of panic, court hears

February 05, 2013

ONE of the "principal investigators" into the murder of Daniel Morcombe has told how the accused killer, Brett Peter Cowan, told an undercover officer he panicked and strangled the teenager after abducting him from a Sunshine Coast bus stop.
Giving evidence on Tuesday during the third week of a committal hearing, Homicide Detective Senior Sergeant Stephen Blanchfield told how Cowan admitted to kidnapping and killing Daniel on December 7, 2003, in a conversation secretly recorded by a police officer in August 2011.

BRETT Cowan was first visited by police two weeks after Daniel Morcombe disappeared from a Sunshine Coast bus stop, a court has heard.
Defence lawyer Michael Bosscher said detectives from Task Force Argos - a unit that investigates cases of child abuse - visited his client on December 21, 2003, to ask about his movements on the day the teenager went missing.

"He indicated that at the relevant time, he was in the vicinity of where Daniel disappeared," he said.

THE committal hearing into the abduction and murder of Daniel Morcombe resumes in Brisbane.

Asked if it was frustrating to have to leave the hearing, Mr Morcombe said: "It certainly is. We've made it very known we'd like to sit in and listen."

There were "no surprises" in the morning's evidence and the couple was "fully motivated" to seeing through the court process, he said.

"On the way here this morning we drove past the cemetery where Daniel was laid to rest. We drove past the abduction site. The blood's flowing on the way here."

Wow. Mr. Bruce and Mrs. Denise Morcombe. Wow.
Were I to have 1/10th of their character.
God bless them as they march on.

Thanks for the warning, details of this case are very disturbing ...

I so admire the Morecombes for sitting through the terrible details of what their dear son went through. Such respect and love for Daniel.

I have trouble believing Cowan's confessed story. I cannot imagine that Daniel went willingly with him for a ride to the shops, especially as eye witness accounts in previous MSM have said how uncomfortable Daniel looked with a greasy, unkempt Cowan lurking behind him at the underpass. And the rest is just designed to make Cowan look less barbaric ... he disgusts me.

An absolutely poignant "opinion" report from Amy Remeikis at Brisbane Times

Emotion remains raw in sterile Morcombe courtroom

February 6, 2013

Opinion

It's a myth to suggest that journalists can turn off emotions. An impossible ideal. I cried so hard at Daniel's funeral I thought my heart would break. The Morcombes are so giving, it is hard not to get attached. I would go so far as to call them my friends. Many journalists would.

Over the years, the unknowns have given flight to fears which I cannot bring myself to make real in the black and white of text.

So hearing those words in such a sterile environment, at the same time as Bruce and Denise were finally given some idea - albeit only alleged - of their son's final moments, I did what we're trained to do.

I'd bet my life that although Cowan has confessed, his version of Daniel's death is sanitised. I don't know how exactly this confession happened (e.g. talking to him while he's high on pot, and/or using some questioning technique/s in order to get him to divulge all the details), but I bet he has nonetheless changed a lot of it to make him look better.

His previous crimes against children were vicious! Then, even when the police cornered him and told him they knew he did it and had the proof, etc, he still tried to get away with it. I really doubt that Daniel's death was an "accident" as he claims it was. As for the molestation side of things...I doubt he would have been able to restrain himself there, unless he was interrupted.

Utter scum. I hope he's having a horrible life behind bars!

"(He described) putting branches over Daniel's body and returning (about a week) later where all that was left was a small piece of bone," Mr Cash said.

.. so how does that happen? Even if, to be horribly blunt, there were packs of feral dogs in the area, there'd be more left of him than that, surely.

What purpose would Cowan have in lying, at this point?

(And yes, thank you Marly! Much appreciated. :) )

I am not following close enough to be sure - but one of his charges is for interfering with the body I think. If this was post charges I assume he'd be lying to cover up whatever it was that led to that charge?

May Bruce and Denise find the strength for the trial. I feel for their prolonged pain.

Daniel, my heart still breaks for you. I think about you all the time.

Thank you Marly for your unwavering commitment to the updates for this case (and others).

For the first time since Daniel Morcombe went missing, his family have returned to their Sunshine Coast home with some certainty they will receive the answers they have waited nine years to hear

No date has been set, but it is hoped that the trial can be held in the second half of 2013, possibly October.

It means that about the same time the Morcombes mark 10 years since Daniel's disappearance and what would have been his 24th birthday, they may know the truth about his death.
