"A first-year spraying painting apprentice lived with his parents and teenage sister in a Spring Hill apartment complex on Leichhardt St just a short walk from the murder scene.

The McEwans moved in to the Spring Hill apartment complex after selling their previous home at Coorparoo, where neighbours yesterday told a story of a friendly family."

He basically lived 600 metres away from where the incident took place. A 5 minute walk.

EUNJI Ban was the victim of a random thrill killing, dying at the hands of a Brisbane teenager who had fantasised about murder since he was a child, police will allege.

Police will allege *McEwan believed from childhood he would grow up to be a killer - often dreaming about it or drawing pictures of savage murders.

McEwan went out on Sunday morning with the express purpose of killing someone and Ms Ban was the first person to cross his path, police will allege.

It is expected police will allege when officers arrested McEwan he was wearing a fresh plaster cast for a broken hand sustained in the attack

Sorry, I know it seems like I'm repeating myself (I posted earlier about this), I really wonder now about that other woman jogger who was strangled to unconsciousness in similar circumstances minutes from the park a month ago. The woman got a good look at the man when she regained consciousness and even spoke to him before he took off.

Thumbs up to the Brisbane police for solving this quickly. This is truely a monster and there would have been more victims. I also wonder if Ban was his first victim or if there were others.

I am truly shocked reading the articles this morning. And Possum, I agree with you, those details are very graphic - not often that is released so soon after a crime.

I'm a bit confused - they say he was someone that people would not have suspected of committing such a crime, yet clearly there is evidence that he had a perverse fantasy to commit murder. Was it private drawings they found, did his parents/teachers know about these fantasies? Clearly the friend was privy to something - question is was it before or after the murder that he knew something? Of course I'm happy he came forward though.

It seems like if he does have a criminal history, it mustn't be violent, because the papers are claiming he wasn't a likely suspect. Did he have a psychiatric history? I am just hoping that someone didn't have insight into his fantasies before Eunji was murdered, because they should be feeling somewhat guilty themselves now. I know that sounds harsh, but if someone indicates they have a fantasy to kill someone, something should be done BEFORE it happens.

Rambling done - I'm just very angry about the whole situation this morning. It almost would have been easier if it was just a random drunk/high accidental killing. But this was clearly premeditated in a very sick way which is just horrific.

You are completely on to something there, from that attack site to the perps last sighting heading towards Cornwall St if you a continue a line it goes to AM's current residence. (also in the region where he used to live and work until late 2011)

Police will claim he then dragged Ms Ban up a set of concrete and stone steps and hid her body behind a tree. The accused killer allegedly left items in the branches.

Spring Hill is about a good half hour walk from there, if not longer. Spring Hill is pretty much Brisbane CBD and Annerley and Ekibin are suburbs of Brisbane, a few KMs from the CBD. I'm not saying it is definitely not him, but I do think it is a bit premature to assume it is linked.

I have lived in Brisbane all my life and there are always reports about random assults on joggers etc, many of whom are found not to be linked to each other, regardless of if the attack was in the same suburb etc. Brisbane is a fairly safe city, but like all places there are always going to be seedy people.

Annerley also for a bit of background on the suburb is not the safest place. High crime rate, even to the point that if you were a renter and tried to get house and contents insurance, you will either be paying through the nose, or turned down completely due to the high break and enter rate that occurs in the suburb. So the suburb in it's own right could have plenty of potential attackers roaming around. And Spring Hill is a bit of a cross section, due to it being in the CBD, many professionals choose to buy and live there as it is close to work etc. But it also has the total opposite clientle, such as a high rate of homeless, many of whom congregate in the park when Eunji's body was found. I used to work in Spring Hill and had to walk up the hill that Eunji was walking, and even during the day I would choose to walk along the main path instead of cutting through the park due to knowing the types that lurked within it. In saying that though, the same could be said about West End, Fortitude Valley. There are some places where you just wouldn't walk at night alone, or even with just 1 other person, because even though they are popular places to live with the professionals, they are also home to the down and outs.

BRISBANE residents have gathered to mourn the death of Eunji Ban - the 22-year-old woman murdered in a CBD park on Sunday.

The ceremony is taking part in Wickham Park in the Brisbane CBD, off Albert Street and Turbot Street, behind the Brisbane Dental Hospital.

The event was announced by the Brisbane City Council announced on behalf of the Korean Society Queensland.

This is an absolutely chilling crime. The whole idea of him just 'deciding' to kill someone that day is so difficult to even comprehend. I'm very interested in his background - does he have a psych history? And like another wise sleuther said earlier, I wonder who was aware of his fantasies and how seriously they were taken?

Also wondering whether he was another gamer (like Morgan Huxley's accused murderer)........seems the gaming completely desensitises these young guys and an already blurred reality becomes completely surreal....:facepalm:

I don't know anything about the Morgon Huxley case but there does seem to be a glut of serial killer TV shows on at the moment, The Following, Hannibal and Dexter.

edit: I'd also put up The walking dead and game of thrones as shows to take off the disturbed persons watch list.

One report said that while he was bashing/stomping on this girl, he lay down beside her when cars drove past (I don't know how far or how close they were, though) so as to make it look like they were a drunk couple who were making out.

I agree re the psychopath theory - he doesn't sound delusional or psychotic. He apparently left home with a plan and he acted upon it. The fact that he lay down beside her when cars drove past is very alarming - such clarity of thought there. He wasn't lost in a frenzy of emotion (even though it sounds like he must have been when you read about what he actually did to the poor woman and how he was yelling out 'Die!')

He knew exactly what he was doing - would have fantasised about it endlessly before.

I too want to know how they know all this information about him so quickly. And if they know from other people being aware of this, was mental health care sought for him? Or did he slip through the cracks??

He has no internet presence that I have been able to find so far, which seems odd for a twenty year old......

I just read that three of his friends rang the police. At least they had the courage/decency to do that for Eunji. Blessings to her.

I am thankful his friends dobbed him in. It makes me wonder if he bragged about it to them or somehow his behaviour was suspicious. But thank you, whoever you are, you may have saved a lot more people from this vicious individual.

I saw some weird tweets the other night - before the arrest. Someone was asking about a guy but I could only see one side of the conversation. The person was asking about a guy because 'it sounded like him.' Wish I could find them now.

Alex Reuben McEwan used his laptop to google media reports on the case as detectives hunted the killer, it will be alleged.
