Irish eyes weep at Jill Meagher memorial

October 06, 2012

STILL reeling from her death on the other side of the world, there were a lot of tears but little room at Jill Meagher's memorial service in her hometown in Ireland

"From Melbourne to Drogheda, from Dublin to Perth, from Boyle in Roscommon to Brisbane in Australia and around the world, all of us have been touched by Jillian Meagher's tragic passing," said Father Oliver Devine, who conducted her wedding ceremony at the church four years ago.

Public safety push spurring Queensland councils to install more CCTV cameras

October 06, 2012

AUDITS, public grants and more surveillance cameras are part of a new push to wipe out crime blackspots throughout the state.
The move follows the rape and murder of Melbourne woman Jill Meagher, who was farewelled in a moving ceremony in Melbourne yesterday.

CCTV footage recorded by a nearby shop played a pivotal role in the investigation, leading Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu to announce an audit of Melbourne's network.
Brisbane's CCTV network could also soon be audited.

Councils across the state are bolstering their surveillance arsenals, with cameras even finding their way into the main streets of towns in the Western Downs.

Young women say safety at night a big issue in city following Jill Meagher's death

THE death of Brunswick woman Jill Meagher has made Melbourne women rethink the way they get home at night.

Rachel, 25, said she was now much more aware of safety.

"I'll probably try to stick to main roads and I'd like to have someone with me," she said.

Katia, 24, had lived in the area her whole life and said she was shocked to hear something so violent could happen in the neighbourhood she knows so well.

"I have walked these streets so many times, but it really hit home when I heard about this," she said.

"I am always pretty cautious but more so now.

"We have talked about it as friends and we are going to make sure we all get in taxis together or make sure we go home with someone we know."

Zara, 28, moved to Brunswick three weeks ago from Scotland and was attracted to the lively area for its music and bar scene.

The night Ms Meagher disappeared, Zara left her housemate at nearby bar The Penny Black and walked home - only blocks away from where Ms Meagher went missing.

Thank you for this link, it really is a beautiful piece. :) It heartened me to hear there was a whole lotta laughter and joy in celebrating her life at the ceremony. I particularly liked JM's mum's request for us to "Smile when you think of her. She was gorgeous in every way."

I noted that one of her friends "....recounted the embarrassment she felt that her friend would not update her "brick of a Nokia phone"." There was a bit of discussion earlier in this thread about the tracking abilities of a smart phone & how Vodaphone was of great assistance in the case. Would her old style (dumb as opposed to smart?? :p) Nokia phone have had the same tracking features as a newer smart phone? Would it have made any difference if she'd had a newer phone?

oh hang on a minute according to this: http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/vi...-of-jill-meagher/story-e6frf7kx-1226483766187
it states on Saturdy 2am AB's neighbour saw 2 cop cars puill up. Again cant remember if this was discussed in thread. So "sounds" like someone (JM or her brother) had alerted police in someway immediately. so either Jill did manage to dial 000 (phone line may have just been left open) or her brother alerted police once he couldnt get hold of her. Sounds like alot of information was kept secret re: calls made) right from the very beginning of disappearance, to not jeopardise the right moment for police to make there arrest.

Saturday morning – Ms Meagher reported missing to police. Police start search for the missing 29-year-old.

Well done Cyansea:rocker:

There is no one answer for anything unfortunately. A member of my family nearly died as a result of an unprovoked brutal attack and the perp got off on a 2.5 year suspended sentence and is out in our community (near the area where Jill lived), ready to offend again. What does it take to put these people away for good? Why does the minority have the upper hand, because that's what it feels like. No, we must as a community rise up now and tell anyone who will listen that we have had enough, we are going the UK way I'm afraid, maybe some will disagree but that is MO, things need to change. Our Judiciary needs to impose the full sentence and stop pussyfooting and leave the perps easy ways out, they need to be held accountable for their actions, full stop. For me one strike your're out. If someone can inflict that sort of harm on another human being there is something terribly wrong with them, something which a 'quick fix' WILL NOT fix. I am of the belief that these sorts of problems with people are more genetic than anything they have learned environmentally. There is a HUGE problem in our society and if it is swept under the carpet by our politicians, we as a community will have no choice but to live with these people who have been released out on parole in our communities without even knowing about them? Seriously how wrong is that? Something needs to be done. In an email I sent the other day to the Minister for Corrections, I did not receive a reply, I did not expect to receive a reply but just had to get it off my chest. One thing I did add to that email was that I would be happy to attend any forum that they could arrange and that I would appreciate a reply to my email. Guess what? I got nothing. That's exactly what I expected. Hopefully some change can occur and it needs to occur swiftly.

Who are the Judges accountable to? Maybe one of our legal eagles can clarify that for me? Why are they handing out light sentences for horrific crimes? No one wants that I'm sure, so why hand out light sentences?
Who is the Parole Board accountable to? Who do they justify their decisions to when they let Perps who have a long criminal history out on Parole? Why? I don't want them out in our Society and I am sure no one else does. So what do we do, keep them in prison? YES. What problems arise if we keep them locked up? Why don't our Politicians want to keep them locked up? Because that's what it looks like to me, get them in, get them out is what is happening. These are questions which need answers. If Judges are 'past it' the need to be put out to pasture. Get some Judges who can dole out sentences which equate to the crime. If they can't what are we paying them for?

Very well said Cyansea. You ask who are the judges accountable to. IMO they are accountable to we the public to ensure that justice is served and that a sentence handed down fits the crime. Sadly it seems that the judges are accountable to no one but themselves. Similarly the Parole Board IMO is also accountable to we the public to ensure that an offender does not ever have the opportunity to offend again.

MOO.

Thank you TGY,
I do feel very strongly about safety in all our Communities and things need to change, fast.

I love your courage, posts & passion.
Australia is now broke & the judges answer the commissioner. (me finks) we can't afford to feed & house these effluent in the way these human rights greenies want....lets face it, even the mental homes have closed.....so we let them go back onto the streets for society to handle. God help us when there are injection rooms for druggies to do um what druggies do! AMOO only.
Don't get me started on where our taxes should be spent maybe another time and place for that!
Build a high security prison out in the middle of The Australian dessert & let the absolute crazies be there, cultivate, water & feed themselves & let society walk with the freedom Jill deserved.
Please don't tell me I'm over the top, I know I am but at the moment we have a right to be angry on Jill's behalf, yes Cyansea?

Absolutely TGY, we have the right to be very angry indeed.
The government worries about what to do with illegal immigrants (don't get me started :) ), The Government needs to fix what is in OUR society FIRST. I think what you have written is correct.
Some Perps should NEVER be released. What to do with them? Well, like you say middle of the Australian Dessert is a good place to start. The government needs to look at overseas models, how they deal with crime, because obviously what Australia is doing isn't working, it's broken and it NEEDS TO BE FIXED. There are people who can't be rehabilitated, they just can't. We don't want them back in Society. We have a RIGHT not to have them back in society. They need to stay locked up for good. I am for Capital Punishment, that's not going to happen in our lifetime, so what's the answer? Short term is to keep them incarcerated, whatever it takes. Then build more prisons, employ more professionals who are accountable for their actions as we are in our positions of employment. We are accountable for everything we do re our employment, why not them? Bottom, line, never to be released. The rest can be worked out.
