‘Beste lerares van de staat Queensland.’ Die prijs gaat in 1997 naar Marion Barter, 51 jaar, moeder van twee uit Southport, een stadje gelegen in het noordoosten van Australië. Barter is fier op de erkenning. Toch is ze haar Australische leventje meer dan beu. Ze wil er weg, ondanks een dochter van 21 en een zoon van 17.
Barter deelt aan het eind van de lente aan haar kinderen mee dat ze een sabbatical plant, door Europa wil reizen en daarom ook haar huis zal verkopen. Haar huwelijk met voetbalinternational Johnny Warren, down under gekend als Captain Socceroo, is dan al een tijd op de klippen gelopen.
Haar exodus moet duidelijk snel gaan: ze geeft haar ontslag op school, verkoopt haar huis met verlies en neemt amper de tijd om afscheid te nemen van vrienden en familie.
Op zondag 22 juni 1997 geeft een buurman Barter een lift naar het busstation. Na een jaar reizen, zo deelt ze mee aan haar kinderen, zal ze via de Oriënt Express en enkele vluchten terug in Queensland arriveren. Het afscheid is bruusk, alsof ze gebrainwasht is. Haar dochter Sally ziet haar moeder nog in een glimp bij een vreemde man in de auto zitten. En het is niet de buurman.
Via Brisbane vliegt de lerares van het jaar naar Zuid-Korea, en van daar naar London Heathrow. Eind juli ‘97, een maand na de start van haar onverwachte sabbatical, arriveren thuis in Southport nog drie postkaarten. Op 31 juli belt Barter vanuit Tunbridge Wells, een stadje in Kent (Verenigd Koninkrijk), naar haar dochter. Het zal hun laatste gesprek worden.
Pas vele jaren later zal blijken dat Marion Barter al in mei 1997, dus net voor haar vertrek, haar naam heeft laten veranderen in Florabella Natalia Marion Remakel. Opmerkelijk: twee dagen na dat laatste gesprek met haar dochter Sally komt diezelfde mevrouw Remakel Australië opnieuw binnen. Ze geeft aan een getrouwde vrouw te zijn. Met haar twee kinderen neemt ze geen contact op.
In de maanden nadien verdwijnt er elke dag vijfduizend dollar van haar bankrekening. In oktober verdwijnt er nog eens 80.000 dollar. Het geld wordt telkens afgehaald in Byron Bay en in Burleigh Heads, in het zuidoosten van Australië.
Haar familie denkt op dat ogenblik dat ze nog steeds Barter heet én in Europa haar sluimerende depressie uit haar lijf reist. Maar wanneer Barter niet eens naar huis belt voor de achttiende verjaardag van haar zoon, wordt dochter Sally ongerust. Ze neemt contact op met de lokale politie in Australië, maar dat levert niets op. Barter is meerderjarig, vrijwillig vertrokken en (zogezegd) op reis. Er is dus geen reden tot paniek, laat staan tot een internationaal onderzoek, klinkt het.
Meer dan twee decennia gaan voorbij. Al die tijd geeft hun moeder noch onder Barter noch onder de naam Remakel enig teken van leven. Ze lijkt in rook opgegaan. Haar twee kinderen zijn ten einde raad. Dochter Sally klopt op meerdere deuren.
Zo belandt ze ook bij de podcast The lady vanishes, van de Australische nieuwszender 7News. Daar zetten ze Marion Barters verdwijning centraal. Met succes. De druk op de autoriteiten stijgt. De Australische politie zet haar in 2019 – 22 jaar na datum – eindelijk op de lijst van vermiste personen. Wie de gouden tip kan aanleveren, strijkt 330.000 euro op.
Intussen zijn we 62 episodes en twaalf miljoen beluisteringen verder. Met dank aan het onlineforum van de podcast regent het hypotheses, sporen en af en toe bruikbare tips. Een van die tips leidt naar ene Fernand Remakel, destijds een Luxemburgse voetballer. Die had zogezegd in 1994 een annonce in de krant gezet dat hij een relatie zocht met een dame. En ja, Marion Barter zou dat zoekertje beantwoord hebben.
Wanneer Luxemburgse onderzoeksjournalisten hem confronteren met die hypothese, valt de echte Remakel uit de lucht. Wat blijkt? In Australië loopt een man rond die heel hard gelijkt op Remakel, hem ooit ontmoette en een rijbewijs met krek dezelfde naam heeft: een uitgeweken Belg die in 1969 naar Australië is geëmigreerd, en dus rondrijdt onder de naam Remakel, maar eigenlijk Ric Blum heet.
Geconfronteerd met die onthullingen in de podcast geeft Ric Blum toe destijds onder een valse naam een annonce in de krant te hebben gezet. Hij beweert dat hij in ‘68 in Zwitserland een affaire had met Marion Barter, toen ze nog getrouwd was met haar Australische voetballer. Die was, volgens Blum, toen op stage in Zwitserland en zij had hem in de lobby van een hotel verleid. Onderzoek leert dat de Socceroos – het Australische nationale team – inderdaad op Europese voetbalstages gingen én dat Barter haar man vergezelde, maar de data kloppen niet. Voetballer Johnny Warren is in 1968 nooit in Zwitserland geweest.
Het blijkt niet de eerste leugen van Ric Blum. Hij stelt dat ze zoveel jaren later, in 1997, in Australië ook een affaire hebben gehad. “Maar ik beëindigde die, want ik was getrouwd met mijn vierde vrouw.” Waarom Barter dan onder één van zijn aliassen van destijds – Remakel – een nieuw leven was begonnen? Dat kan hij niet zeggen. “Ze heeft allicht mijn rijbewijs gestolen.”
Onderzoek wijst uit dat Ric Blum de allerlaatste persoon is die Barter levend heeft gezien. De onthullingen in de podcast leidden tot een formeel onderzoek door het Australische gerecht. Blum, intussen 83, is onlangs in de rechtbank verhoord als getuige. Op de vraag of hij haar gedood heeft, zegt hij letterlijk: “Ben je gek? Natuurlijk niet.”
Waarom hij destijds, amper een week voor haar verdwijning, Australië verlaat richting Japan onder het alias Richard Lloyd Westbury, kan hij in de rechtbank niet toelichten.
En het mysterie wordt alleen maar groter wanneer twee Australische vrouwen zich melden die de podcast beluisterden en hem formeel op foto herkennen. Een van hen, Janet Oldenburg, verklaart aan de politie dat ze door Blum is opgelicht voor vele tienduizenden euro’s. Ze ondernam vóór 1997 een gelijkaardige trip als Marion Barter. De twee, zo verklaart ze, hadden een haast identieke reisroute, met krek dezelfde stops in het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Ze zegt dat ze al haar geld aan hem kwijtspeelde. De interesse in de levenswandel van Ric Blum wordt er alleen maar groter door.
En de lijst met aliassen ook, zo blijkt uit het onderzoek. ‘Blum’ is in 1969 naar Australië geëmigreerd, onder de Belgische naam Willy Wouters. Vijf jaar later, in 1974, is hij onder de naam Frederick de Hedervary officieel Australiër geworden. Twee Luxemburgse onderzoeksjournalisten onthullen samen met deze krant dat hij effectief als Willy Wouters het levenslicht heeft gezien. Hij is geboren in 1939 in Doornik, als telg van antiekhandelaars, en opgegroeid in een kroostrijk gezin, met ook nog twee halfbroers die de achternaam David dragen.
Uit oude gerechtelijke documenten blijkt dat hij op zijn 26ste voor het eerst is veroordeeld wegens het uitgeven van ongedekte cheques. In 1971 krijgt hij in Rouen van een Franse rechter vier jaar cel. Zijn crimineel parcours bevat naast tal van verkeersinbreuken ook handel in gestolen goederen, fraude en, jawel, identiteitsdiefstal. Van ons land tot Frankrijk en Luxemburg laat hij een crimineel spoor achter. Ook in Marokko belandt hij in ‘76 en ‘77 achter tralies. De Marokkaanse inlichtingendiensten kennen hem ginder als Roger Lauzoney, geboren in Casablanca. Een zoveelste geval van identiteitsdiefstal.
Dat laatste brengt ons terug naar het alias ‘Remakel’. De Belg Willy Wouters baat in de jaren 80 in een Luxemburgs dorpje, Noertzange, een antiekwinkel uit. Hij koopt er (gestolen) goederen op en verkoopt ze met winst. De Luxemburgse voetballer van toen, Remakel, herkent de oplichter als ‘Freddy David’. De gestolen familienaam van zijn halfbroers, dus. Hij geeft zich in Luxemburg uit als fotograaf en handelaar in (gouden) munten.
Afgaand op de tijdstippen valt te concluderen dat hij dus jarenlang onder valse namen van Australië naar Europa en Marokko reisde. Onderzoek legt bloot dat hij in Australië ook jarenlang een pensioen van de Belgische Staat opstrijkt na een ongeval tijdens zijn militaire dienst destijds in Congo.
Fast forward naar september 2006. Ghislaine Dubois-Danlois stapt er het politiekantoor van Tervuren binnen. De Belgische, die haar leven lang in het Vlaams-Brabantse Moorsel woont, heeft geen benul van de verdwijning van Marion Barter aan de andere kant van de wereld. Ze doet aangifte nadat ze opgelicht is door ene Frederic de Hedervary, de Belg die 32 jaar eerder dus officieel Australiër is geworden. Ook van dat laatste heeft ze in 2006 nog geen flauw benul.
Ze maakt in het politiekantoor melding dat De Hedervary haar 70.000 euro armer heeft gemaakt en met de noorderzon is verdwenen. Hoewel de weduwe amper een maand eerder nog stapelverliefd van plan was geweest om met hem te emigreren naar Australië. Tot grote consternatie van haar vier kinderen.
“Ik was een vogel voor de kat”, vertelt de tachtigjarige vrouw aan het Nieuwsblad. Ghislaine Dubois-Danlois woont intussen in Zuid-Frankrijk en is speciaal naar een Brussels café gekomen nadat we haar confronteren met recente foto’s van Ric Blum, alias Frederic de Hedervary, alias ... “Destijds, in 2006, was ik eenzaam. Ik was weduwe, had vier kinderen, was blond, niet onaantrekkelijk en was niet van plan om eeuwig single te blijven.”
En dus, vertelt ze, had ze een annonce in de krant geplaatst, op zoek naar een nieuwe man in haar leven. Van Tinder was nog geen sprake. Het was old school, via een zoekertje in de krant. Er was veel reactie op gekomen, maar vooral die ene handgeschreven brief, in het Frans, zonder spelfouten, had haar aandacht getrokken. Ze was onder de indruk en viel als een blok voor de rijzige man met de blonde lokken die zich voorstelde als een Belgische gendarme die destijds als vrijwilliger in de Vietnamoorlog had gevochten. Als een handelaar ook in gouden munten die veel moest reizen voor zijn werk en vaak in Australië vertoefde.
Het ging allemaal razendsnel. Ghislaine Dubois-Danlois riep haar kinderen op 9 augustus 2006 bij elkaar. “Hier, champagne, dit is mijn nieuwe vriend, met wie ik dra trouwen zal en met wie ik naar Australië zal emigreren.”
Haar schoondochter Alexandra herinnert zich nog dat De Hedervary voor de gelegenheid spaghetti had gemaakt. Niemand die hem voordien ooit had gezien. Haar schoonmoeder blijkt stapelverliefd en geeft aan dat ze haar huis in Moorsel zal verkopen, net als haar auto. Ze was niet op andere gedachten te brengen. “Hij trof me, als ik daar nu op terugkijk, op een handig moment”, vertelt ze. “Ik ben niet dom, ik werkte als verzekeringsagente en had soms vijfhonderd cliënten die ik moest peilen. Ik kende mensen. Maar ja, ik ben naïef geweest.”
De attente spraakwaterval die De Hedervary toen was, wou zogezegd trouwen op Bali. De handgeschreven brief die had geleid tot hun verloving zou hij zogezegd in hun slaapkamer in Australië ophangen. Een verhuisfirma kwam Ghislaines kostbare spullen inladen. Zelfs haar trouwring van destijds verdween in een doos, naast een rist juwelen.
Ze herinnert zich ook nog haarscherp dat hij haar voor de vermeende afreis nog vroeg om haar lever te testen. Opmerkelijk: uit Australische medische dossiers blijkt dat ook Marion Barter in de weken voor haar verdwijning een uitgebreide test van de lever liet uitvoeren. Wilde hij haar vergiftigen? Ghislaine Dubois-Danlois denkt van wel. Haar schoondochter vond destijds een boek van De Hedervary in huis waarin de auteur uitgebreid beschrijft hoe je iemand geruisloos kon vergiftigen.
De enige zekerheid is dat de meesteroplichter als een dief in de nacht verdween met kostbare bezittingen ter waarde van 70.000 euro. “Ik heb hem nog één keer aan de telefoon gehad”, zegt ze. “Zijn letterlijke woorden: Als ik ooit nog van u hoor, zal je weten wat er volgt.”
Van haar klacht, ook bij het Leuvense parket, is nooit iets gekomen. De dader was spoorloos. Uit het gerechtelijke dossier dat we konden inkijken valt niet meteen te concluderen dat er heel hard naar de dader is gezocht. “Mijn geld is weg, maar ik leef. Ik kan enkel hopen dat mijn getuigenis kan vermijden dat er nog slachtoffers vallen.”
In 2013 kreeg ze wel telefoon van de politie van Doornik. Daar was een gelijkaardige klacht binnengelopen, klonk het. Nog een vrouw had er aangifte gedaan. Ze stelde dat ze voor bijna 200.000 euro was opgelicht door een ver familielid die haar overtuigde om te investeren in vastgoed op Bali.
Op 10 april 2012 is de vrouw naar de politie gestapt. In een cafeetje in het Henegouwse Pipaix wil ze bijna elf jaar later ook met ons praten, zij het anoniem. ‘Charlotte’ is naar eigen zeggen beschaamd omdat ze zich destijds zo liet rollen. Op dat ogenblik woonde ‘Ric Blum’ officieel al 43 jaar aan de andere kant van de wereld. Toch duikt hij als Willy Wouters – zijn echte naam, dus – op in geboortestad Doornik.
“Hij is de neef van mijn overleden echtgenoot”, vertelt ze. “De halfbroer van Freddy en Desiré David. Ik had Cousin Willy ooit één keer eerder gezien, jaren terug, op een begrafenis van een familielid.” Ze omschrijft hem als iemand die heel eloquent sprak, iemand met een knap voorkomen. Een charmeur. Zelf heeft ze op dat ogenblik al jaren een goede job in Brussel. Of de twee iets amoureus hadden, laat ze in het midden. Ze zegt dat hij – op doorreis – drie weken bij haar inwoonde. Hij slaagde erin om haar te overtuigen om mee te investeren in vastgoed aan de andere kant van de wereld. “Elk 100.000 euro, goed voor een prachtig huis op Bali. Ik vond het een interessante piste.” In een lokaal bankkantoor haalde ze twee keer 50.000 euro cash af. Hij overtuigde haar ook om te investeren in gouden munten.
De twee spraken af om elkaar in Amsterdam te treffen, om van daar verder naar Bali af te reizen. “Hij wilde al vroeger naar ginder, want hij wilde niet gezien worden met zoveel cash geld”, vertelt ze. Het was de ideale manier om haar geld te doen verdwijnen. Ze vlogen effectief samen naar Bali, zogezegd om daar te gaan investeren. Uit reisdocumenten valt uit te maken dat ze tussen 23 en 29 maart 2012 samen op Bali vertoefden. Op een avond krijgt ‘Charlotte’ van hem een avondje in de wellness cadeau. Intussen gaat hij naar “een afspraak” en komt nooit meer terug.
Het duurt dagen voor ze beseft dat ze aan de andere kant van de wereld al haar spaargeld kwijt is aan een gewiekste meesteroplichter. “Hij had mijn retourtickets al aangekocht en in een kluis van het hotel bewaard”, zegt ze. “Op 1 april 2012 kreeg ik plots een dreigende e-mail van hem. Je overleden man moest me nog een hoop geld. Ik ga deze investering dus voor mezelf houden.” Negen dagen later stapt ze naar de politie. Elf jaar later wacht ze nog steeds op een arrestatie én op een eurocent.
Speurwerk van de makers van The lady vanishes brengt trouwens aan het licht dat “neef Willy” in april 2012 opnieuw opduikt in Australië. Hij stapt er in Sydney zelf naar de politie en diept een verhaal op dat hij zelf beroofd is van 50.000 euro cash. Net op een plek in de stad waar geen videocamera’s hangen. Is ook dit in scène gezet? Onduidelijk.
Ric Blum zelf is intussen 83 jaar. Hij woont nog steeds in Australië met zijn vierde vrouw, met wie hij kinderen heeft. Op foto’s uit 2011 is te zien hoe hij, gehuld in roos hemd en witte flanellen broek, zijn dochter naar het altaar begeleidt. Hij leidde er decennia een zorgeloos leven, tot de podcastmakers hem dus confronteerden met zijn criminele parcours en zijn wirwar aan leugens. Intussen kwam ook aan het licht dat een vorig huwelijk daar strandde nadat zijn toenmalige vrouw overleed na een bizar verkeersongeval. Bewijzen dat er meer aan de hand is, zijn er niet.
Met dank aan twee Luxemburgse onderzoeksjournalisten staat de teller intussen op 30 aliassen in vijftig jaar tijd. 62 podcastepisodes ten spijt en duizenden Australiërs die mee zoeken naar Marion Barter is de lerares uit Southport nog steeds onvindbaar. Het Australische gerecht beslist binnenkort of het Ric Blum officieel in verdenking stelt wegens betrokkenheid bij haar verdwijning. De twee Belgische vrouwen hopen alsnog op een mirakel. “Onze centen zien we nooit meer terug. Maar hij moet gestraft worden.”
Een wanhopige dochter, een true crime podcast die razend populair werd, een gigantische premie voor de gouden tip en een stel misdaadjournalisten die mee speuren naar de waarheid. Dat zijn de ingrediënten voor dit verhaal.
The lady vanishes groeide de voorbije jaren uit tot de meest beluisterde true crime podcast van Australië. Intussen telt de podcast 62 episodes en zijn de afleveringen al meer dan twaalf miljoen keer beluisterd. De podcast is wereldwijd te beluisteren. Met dank aan de dochter van Marion Barter, die ten einde raad via deze weg alsnog een doorbraak hoopt te forceren. Het podcastteam bestaat naast dochter Sally uit twee onderzoeksjournalisten en een producer. Er is een forum waarop luisteraars kunnen discussiëren, zoals bij ons bijvoorbeeld ook gebeurt op het Bende van Nijvel-forum.
Na een reeks tips met linken in Luxemburg beten twee onderzoeksjournalisten uit het Groothertogdom, Yannick Lambert en Tom Rüdell, zich het afgelopen jaar eveneens vast in de zaak. Zij werken voor de Luxemburgse tak van Mediahuis. Zo kwam de zaak ook bij ons op de radar. De afgelopen maanden brachten we het Belgische luik van de meesteroplichter mee in kaart. Op basis van gerechtelijke documenten konden we zijn crimineel parcours reconstrueren en de echte naam van Ric Blum, Willy Wouters, ontdekken. Op die manier kwamen we uit bij twee Belgische slachtoffers.

Dat kan hij niet zeggen. “Ze heeft allicht mijn rijbewijs gestolen.”
Onderzoek wijst uit dat Ric Blum de allerlaatste persoon is die Barter levend heeft gezien. De onthullingen in de podcast leidden tot een formeel onderzoek door het Australische gerecht. Blum, intussen 83, is onlangs in de rechtbank verhoord als getuige. Op de vraag of hij haar gedood heeft, zegt hij letterlijk: “Ben je gek? Natuurlijk niet.”
Waarom hij destijds, amper een week voor haar verdwijning, Australië verlaat richting Japan onder het alias Richard Lloyd Westbury, kan hij in de rechtbank niet toelichten.
En het mysterie wordt alleen maar groter wanneer twee Australische vrouwen zich melden die de podcast beluisterden en hem formeel op foto herkennen. Een van hen, Janet Oldenburg, verklaart aan de politie dat ze door Blum is opgelicht voor vele tienduizenden euro’s. Ze ondernam vóór 1997 een gelijkaardige trip als Marion Barter. De twee, zo verklaart ze, hadden een haast identieke reisroute, met krek dezelfde stops in het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Ze zegt dat ze al haar geld aan hem kwijtspeelde. De interesse in de levenswandel van Ric Blum wordt er alleen maar groter door.
En de lijst met aliassen ook, zo blijkt uit het onderzoek. ‘Blum’ is in 1969 naar Australië geëmigreerd, onder de Belgische naam Willy Wouters. Vijf jaar later, in 1974, is hij onder de naam Frederick de Hedervary officieel Australiër geworden. Twee Luxemburgse onderzoeksjournalisten onthullen samen met deze krant dat hij effectief als Willy Wouters het levenslicht heeft gezien. Hij is geboren in 1939 in Doornik, als telg van antiekhandelaars, en opgegroeid in een kroostrijk gezin, met ook nog twee halfbroers die de achternaam David dragen.
Uit oude gerechtelijke documenten blijkt dat hij op zijn 26ste voor het eerst is veroordeeld wegens het uitgeven van ongedekte cheques. In 1971 krijgt hij in Rouen van een Franse rechter vier jaar cel. Zijn crimineel parcours bevat naast tal van verkeersinbreuken ook handel in gestolen goederen, fraude en, jawel, identiteitsdiefstal. Van ons land tot Frankrijk en Luxemburg laat hij een crimineel spoor achter. Ook in Marokko belandt hij in ‘76 en ‘77 achter tralies. De Marokkaanse inlichtingendiensten kennen hem ginder als Roger Lauzoney, geboren in Casablanca. Een zoveelste geval van identiteitsdiefstal.
Dat laatste brengt ons terug naar het alias ‘Remakel’. De Belg Willy Wouters baat in de jaren 80 in een Luxemburgs dorpje, Noertzange, een antiekwinkel uit. Hij koopt er (gestolen) goederen op en verkoopt ze met winst. De Luxemburgse voetballer van toen, Remakel, herkent de oplichter als ‘Freddy David’. De gestolen familienaam van zijn halfbroers, dus. Hij geeft zich in Luxemburg uit als fotograaf en handelaar in (gouden) munten.
Afgaand op de tijdstippen valt te concluderen dat hij dus jarenlang onder valse namen van Australië naar Europa en Marokko reisde. Onderzoek legt bloot dat hij in Australië ook jarenlang een pensioen van de Belgische Staat opstrijkt na een ongeval tijdens zijn militaire dienst destijds in Congo.
Fast forward naar september 2006. Ghislaine Dubois-Danlois stapt er het politiekantoor van Tervuren binnen. De Belgische, die haar leven lang in het Vlaams-Brabantse Moorsel woont, heeft geen benul van de verdwijning van Marion Barter aan de andere kant van de wereld. Ze doet aangifte nadat ze opgelicht is door ene Frederic de Hedervary, de Belg die 32 jaar eerder dus officieel Australiër is geworden. Ook van dat laatste heeft ze in 2006 nog geen flauw benul.
Ze maakt in het politiekantoor melding dat De Hedervary haar 70.000 euro armer heeft gemaakt en met de noorderzon is verdwenen. Hoewel de weduwe amper een maand eerder nog stapelverliefd van plan was geweest om met hem te emigreren naar Australië. Tot grote consternatie van haar vier kinderen.
“Ik was een vogel voor de kat”, vertelt de tachtigjarige vrouw aan het Nieuwsblad. Ghislaine Dubois-Danlois woont intussen in Zuid-Frankrijk en is speciaal naar een Brussels café gekomen nadat we haar confronteren met recente foto’s van Ric Blum, alias Frederic de Hedervary, alias ... “Destijds, in 2006, was ik eenzaam. Ik was weduwe, had vier kinderen, was blond, niet onaantrekkelijk en was niet van plan om eeuwig single te blijven.”
En dus, vertelt ze, had ze een annonce in de krant geplaatst, op zoek naar een nieuwe man in haar leven. Van Tinder was nog geen sprake. Het was old school, via een zoekertje in de krant. Er was veel reactie op gekomen, maar vooral die ene handgeschreven brief, in het Frans, zonder spelfouten, had haar aandacht getrokken. Ze was onder de indruk en viel als een blok voor de rijzige man met de blonde lokken die zich voorstelde als een Belgische gendarme die destijds als vrijwilliger in de Vietnamoorlog had gevochten. Als een handelaar ook in gouden munten die veel moest reizen voor zijn werk en vaak in Australië vertoefde.
Het ging allemaal razendsnel. Ghislaine Dubois-Danlois riep haar kinderen op 9 augustus 2006 bij elkaar. “Hier, champagne, dit is mijn nieuwe vriend, met wie ik dra trouwen zal en met wie ik naar Australië zal emigreren.”
Haar schoondochter Alexandra herinnert zich nog dat De Hedervary voor de gelegenheid spaghetti had gemaakt. Niemand die hem voordien ooit had gezien. Haar schoonmoeder blijkt stapelverliefd en geeft aan dat ze haar huis in Moorsel zal verkopen, net als haar auto. Ze was niet op andere gedachten te brengen. “Hij trof me, als ik daar nu op terugkijk, op een handig moment”, vertelt ze. “Ik ben niet dom, ik werkte als verzekeringsagente en had soms vijfhonderd cliënten die ik moest peilen. Ik kende mensen. Maar ja, ik ben naïef geweest.”
De attente spraakwaterval die De Hedervary toen was, wou zogezegd trouwen op Bali. De handgeschreven brief die had geleid tot hun verloving zou hij zogezegd in hun slaapkamer in Australië ophangen. Een verhuisfirma kwam Ghislaines kostbare spullen inladen. Zelfs haar trouwring van destijds verdween in een doos, naast een rist juwelen.
Ze herinnert zich ook nog haarscherp dat hij haar voor de vermeende afreis nog vroeg om haar lever te testen. Opmerkelijk: uit Australische medische dossiers blijkt dat ook Marion Barter in de weken voor haar verdwijning een uitgebreide test van de lever liet uitvoeren. Wilde hij haar vergiftigen? Ghislaine Dubois-Danlois denkt van wel. Haar schoondochter vond destijds een boek van De Hedervary in huis waarin de auteur uitgebreid beschrijft hoe je iemand geruisloos kon vergiftigen.
De enige zekerheid is dat de meesteroplichter als een dief in de nacht verdween met kostbare bezittingen ter waarde van 70.000 euro. “Ik heb hem nog één keer aan de telefoon gehad”, zegt ze. “Zijn letterlijke woorden: Als ik ooit nog van u hoor, zal je weten wat er volgt.”
Van haar klacht, ook bij het Leuvense parket, is nooit iets gekomen. De dader was spoorloos. Uit het gerechtelijke dossier dat we konden inkijken valt niet meteen te concluderen dat er heel hard naar de dader is gezocht. “Mijn geld is weg, maar ik leef. Ik kan enkel hopen dat mijn getuigenis kan vermijden dat er nog slachtoffers vallen.”
In 2013 kreeg ze wel telefoon van de politie van Doornik. Daar was een gelijkaardige klacht binnengelopen, klonk het. Nog een vrouw had er aangifte gedaan. Ze stelde dat ze voor bijna 200.000 euro was opgelicht door een ver familielid die haar overtuigde om te investeren in vastgoed op Bali.
Op 10 april 2012 is de vrouw naar de politie gestapt. In een cafeetje in het Henegouwse Pipaix wil ze bijna elf jaar later ook met ons praten, zij het anoniem. ‘Charlotte’ is naar eigen zeggen beschaamd omdat ze zich destijds zo liet rollen. Op dat ogenblik woonde ‘Ric Blum’ officieel al 43 jaar aan de andere kant van de wereld. Toch duikt hij als Willy Wouters – zijn echte naam, dus – op in geboortestad Doornik.
“Hij is de neef van mijn overleden echtgenoot”, vertelt ze. “De halfbroer van Freddy en Desiré David. Ik had Cousin Willy ooit één keer eerder gezien, jaren terug, op een begrafenis van een familielid.” Ze omschrijft hem als iemand die heel eloquent sprak, iemand met een knap voorkomen. Een charmeur. Zelf heeft ze op dat ogenblik al jaren een goede job in Brussel. Of de twee iets amoureus hadden, laat ze in het midden. Ze zegt dat hij – op doorreis – drie weken bij haar inwoonde. Hij slaagde erin om haar te overtuigen om mee te investeren in vastgoed aan de andere kant van de wereld. “Elk 100.000 euro, goed voor een prachtig huis op Bali. Ik vond het een interessante piste.” In een lokaal bankkantoor haalde ze twee keer 50.000 euro cash af. Hij overtuigde haar ook om te investeren in gouden munten.
De twee spraken af om elkaar in Amsterdam te treffen, om van daar verder naar Bali af te reizen. “Hij wilde al vroeger naar ginder, want hij wilde niet gezien worden met zoveel cash geld”, vertelt ze. Het was de ideale manier om haar geld te doen verdwijnen. Ze vlogen effectief samen naar Bali, zogezegd om daar te gaan investeren. Uit reisdocumenten valt uit te maken dat ze tussen 23 en 29 maart 2012 samen op Bali vertoefden. Op een avond krijgt ‘Charlotte’ van hem een avondje in de wellness cadeau. Intussen gaat hij naar “een afspraak” en komt nooit meer terug.
Het duurt dagen voor ze beseft dat ze aan de andere kant van de wereld al haar spaargeld kwijt is aan een gewiekste meesteroplichter. “Hij had mijn retourtickets al aangekocht en in een kluis van het hotel bewaard”, zegt ze. “Op 1 april 2012 kreeg ik plots een dreigende e-mail van hem. Je overleden man moest me nog een hoop geld. Ik ga deze investering dus voor mezelf houden.” Negen dagen later stapt ze naar de politie. Elf jaar later wacht ze nog steeds op een arrestatie én op een eurocent.
Speurwerk van de makers van The lady vanishes brengt trouwens aan het licht dat “neef Willy” in april 2012 opnieuw opduikt in Australië. Hij stapt er in Sydney zelf naar de politie en diept een verhaal op dat hij zelf beroofd is van 50.000 euro cash. Net op een plek in de stad waar geen videocamera’s hangen. Is ook dit in scène gezet? Onduidelijk.
Ric Blum zelf is intussen 83 jaar. Hij woont nog steeds in Australië met zijn vierde vrouw, met wie hij kinderen heeft. Op foto’s uit 2011 is te zien hoe hij, gehuld in roos hemd en witte flanellen broek, zijn dochter naar het altaar begeleidt. Hij leidde er decennia een zorgeloos leven, tot de podcastmakers hem dus confronteerden met zijn criminele parcours en zijn wirwar aan leugens. Intussen kwam ook aan het licht dat een vorig huwelijk daar strandde nadat zijn toenmalige vrouw overleed na een bizar verkeersongeval. Bewijzen dat er meer aan de hand is, zijn er niet.
Met dank aan twee Luxemburgse onderzoeksjournalisten staat de teller intussen op 30 aliassen in vijftig jaar tijd. 62 podcastepisodes ten spijt en duizenden Australiërs die mee zoeken naar Marion Barter is de lerares uit Southport nog steeds onvindbaar. Het Australische gerecht beslist binnenkort of het Ric Blum officieel in verdenking stelt wegens betrokkenheid bij haar verdwijning. De twee Belgische vrouwen hopen alsnog op een mirakel. “Onze centen zien we nooit meer terug. Maar hij moet gestraft worden.”
Een wanhopige dochter, een true crime podcast die razend populair werd, een gigantische premie voor de gouden tip en een stel misdaadjournalisten die mee speuren naar de waarheid. Dat zijn de ingrediënten voor dit verhaal.
The lady vanishes groeide de voorbije jaren uit tot de meest beluisterde true crime podcast van Australië. Intussen telt de podcast 62 episodes en zijn de afleveringen al meer dan twaalf miljoen keer beluisterd. De podcast is wereldwijd te beluisteren. Met dank aan de dochter van Marion Barter, die ten einde raad via deze weg alsnog een doorbraak hoopt te forceren. Het podcastteam bestaat naast dochter Sally uit twee onderzoeksjournalisten en een producer. Er is een forum waarop luisteraars kunnen discussiëren, zoals bij ons bijvoorbeeld ook gebeurt op het Bende van Nijvel-forum.
Na een reeks tips met linken in Luxemburg beten twee onderzoeksjournalisten uit het Groothertogdom, Yannick Lambert en Tom Rüdell, zich het afgelopen jaar eveneens vast in de zaak. Zij werken voor de Luxemburgse tak van Mediahuis. Zo kwam de zaak ook bij ons op de radar. De afgelopen maanden brachten we het Belgische luik van de meesteroplichter mee in kaart. Op basis van gerechtelijke documenten konden we zijn crimineel parcours reconstrueren en de echte naam van Ric Blum, Willy Wouters, ontdekken. Op die manier kwamen we uit bij twee Belgische slachtoffers.
