Was just checking up some details on Annette Deverall for the CSK thread and reading about the crime scene had me thinking of Ivan Milat.

"Annette Deverell was last seen heading to Mandurah to buy cigarettes on September 13, 1980.

Two years later, her burnt, skeletal remains were found in bush at Pinjarra. A shotgun was found nearby and a post mortem examination revealed her skull had been fractured."

David Birnie POI.
The yellow panel van might be the clue.
I wonder if it's the same Ford XR Panel Van that my dad sold in 1977 in Beckenham, to a local bloke?
My dad had bought an ex Post office panel van from Kevin James dealership in 1972 or 1973, but mum hated it being post office red, so whilst at work in Pearce one day the RAAF was repainting all their fire tenders this luminous yellow, and he asked one of his mates to include the panel van, which they dutifully sprayed for him. Besides fire trucks, there was no other vehicles at the time painted in this yellow. I once saw it parked at the Canning Show in 1979. It still had the reflective RAAF base security sticker on the front bumper "PEA" in green and white, and the Iron Cross decal (which was cool at the time) above the windscreen in the middle, which I stuck on it early in 1977. David Birnie either lived in or was a regular visitor to Beckenham at the time that the panel van was sold I believe.

That's an interesting "degrees of separation" story. Very recognisable car as well, if anyone happened to see it.

Where David Birnie is a POI always interests me, because I think there's a question as to whether he would have done anything without Catherine. The way those two fed on each other, I wonder if they would have acted alone or if the toxic combination was necessary.

There's the suggestion from the Civil Liberties guy that he acknowledged three other murders before he died. I don't think it was ever determined whether he may have been referring to murders with Catherine or by himself separately. However, if they were him alone that would explain something to me. Given he confessed to the spree with Catherine pretty quickly, why would he have kept the others to himself for all that time? But if they were independent and not linked to her, maybe that's why.

If he did ever act alone, there's probably a whole raft of crimes that could be attributed to him.

I think, from memory, it was brought up on an earlier CSK thread. It was discussed at some point whether Sarah might've been mistaken for one since she was standing on a corner waiting for her taxi. Now that BRE has been charged, discussion of alternative suspects has pretty much ended on the CSK thread. A Lisa Govan thread has been started but is dormant at present.
It is interesting to note though that relatives of Julie Cutler had friends who knew Sarah Spiers. It's only a casual link, but might serve to bring focus upon solving Julie's disappearance.

Petedavo, Do you think Donald Morey is the guy Con Bayen’s stopped in Highgate loitering in what appeared to be an unmarked police car with a blue plastic lined boot, plastic ties, pliers and masking tape; that he reported to the Macro Taskforce as a possible suspect of the CSK? If not do you have any thoughts as to who else it may have been?

What leads credence is the phone call to the journalist, which the content of might not of been fully reported. It would've become apparent to the perp though that they might've got the niece instead of the wife once her dad held the press conference and it was Roger and not Brian on TV.
Although Roger believed that her disappearance is related to CSK case.

IMO there are differences in the case which appears that Julie was stalked and thus her disappearance was premeditated.
And why that might be is what I'm trying to work out, in case that leads to solving this mystery.

Yes, the information mentioned by Julie’s sister in The West article you quoted above does make Julie’s disappearance seem more like it was either someone she knew and/or someone stalking her, which is quite different to the CSK apparently random victims (IMO).

“Ms Cutler’s sister wants three parts of her sister’s disappearance reinvestigated — a break-in at her Fremantle home shortly before she disappeared, her complaint a man had tried to force her car off Stirling Highway and a question of whether she made it home the night she disappeared because her wallet was found at her house.”

So if I’m following your thoughts correctly, are you investigating whether someone was intending to kidnap Julie’s Aunt for ransom because her husband was a mining entrepreneur? Very interesting.

There was a bloke who was convicted of raping sex workers impersonating a cop once. Maybe him?

I was looking for some info about the CSK case and I found this Crimestoppers Cold Case page with several more long-term missing women in Perth, some of whom I’ve seen mentioned on this thread but some I haven’t.

I don’t recall ever hearing about the following cases, does anyone know anything about these cases?

Sharon Elizabeth Fulton

DESCRIPTION: (at time of disappearance):

AGE: 39 years
HEIGHT: 165cm
BUILD: Medium
EYES: Green
HAIR: Brown shoulder length wavy hair
COMPLEXION: Fair

To this day a mystery still surrounds the disappearance of mother of four – Sharon Elizabeth FULTON.

FULTON was born Sharon Elizabeth HULME on the 31st of May 1946 in Dubbo, New South Wales, the only child of Robert and Betty HULME.

When Sharon was 21 years of age she married Maxwell Robert FULTON on the 8th of July at St Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Brisbane. Together, Robert (which he preferred to be called) and Sharon had four children.

Robert was employed by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and was often posted to RAAF bases both within Australia and overseas. In February 1983 Robert was transferred to Western Australia where the family took up residence on Readshaw Road in Duncraig while Robert worked at Pearce Air Base in Bullsbrook.

It was from this address that Sharon FULTON, aged 39, was reported missing to police on the 21st of March 1986, by her husband who last saw his wife four days earlier on March 18th 1986.

Robert reported that he had arrived home from work around Midday on March the 18th to find his wife missing after having had a conversation with her the previous day where she informed him that she needed time to herself. He later told police that he had taken his wife to the East Perth Train Station on this date.

Sharon has not been seen or heard of since. At the time of Sharon’s death her children aged 15 years, 10 years, 7 years and 3 years, were left to fend for themselves without a mother, never knowing what happened to her. She was described as an enthusiastic person by all that knew her, centring her life on motherhood, and occasionally enjoying times with her friends while following her hobby of ten pin bowling. The circumstances surrounding her disappearance still remain a mystery and the tragedy continues to haunt her children – now all grown up – and her friends who are still searching for answers.

Maybell Yamalulu

DESCRIPTION: (at time of disappearance):

AGE: 16 years
BUILD: Slim
EYES: Brown
HAIR: Brown
COMPLEXION: Tanned

Sadly, at just 16 years of age, Maybell Yamalulu’s body was discovered in bushland west of Fitzroy Crossing on the 5th of February, 1983.

Three elderly Aboriginal men found her decomposed body whilst they were hunting near a dam site situated only 13 kilometres west of the Fitzroy Crossing Township.

There were tyre tracks leading into the bush where Maybell’s body was found and also returning to the dam area.

Investigations revealed there were no crocodiles in this dam. It is probably for this reason that the dam was a popular recreational spot utilised by local residents for swimming and barbecues.

Last seen alive on the 14th of January, 1983, Police still remain hopeful that someone may know something that will help uncover the truth about the circumstances surrounding her death.

What Police do know is that on that day Maybell visited a trucking yard just out of town during the late afternoon to socialise with her brother, sister and friends.

After spending some time together the group were dropped off at the Windmill Reserve. Later that evening Maybell was sighted around the Crossing Inn Hotel which was the last known location where she was seen alive.

A post mortem examination confirmed she had been the victim of a brutal assault which ultimately led to her death.

Glenyce Rae McGOWAN

DESCRIPTION: (at time of disappearance):
AGE: 19 years
HEIGHT: 155cm
BUILD: Medium
EYES: Brown

Family and friends of Glenyce Rae McGowan are still desperate to solve the puzzle surrounding her disappearance from a campsite up north in 1975.

Glenyce was born on the 28th of August, 1956 and lived with her family in Medina at the time of her disappearance. She was independent, outgoing and popular, as was reflected by the many friends she had. She was also an experienced traveller, having travelled both intrastate and interstate and always maintained regular contact with her family whilst away.

In December 1975 Glenyce decided to travel to Tom Price to visit her best friend who had recently become pregnant. She arranged to hitch a lift with a family friend who was driving to Port Hedland. They left on the 8th of December, 1975 driving a 1962 blue Ford Falcon station wagon.

Before she left, Glenyce sent a telegram to her best friend advising her she was on her way and she also told her father that she would be home before Christmas.

On the 9th of December, 1975 Glenyce and the family friend arrived in Carnarvon and spent three hours there, during which time Glenyce withdrew $40.00 from her bank account and made a couple of small purchases. The two then headed north and arrived at Nanutarra Roadhouse at 5:00pm.

Due to Tropical Cyclone Joan the road to Tom Price was washed out causing them to spend the night in the camping area adjacent to the roadhouse. They ended up sleeping in the car because the ground was covered in ants.

The following day – the 10th of December, 1975 the family friend continued travelling north towards Port Hedland alone as Glenyce had arranged to get a lift with a family at the campsite who were returning home to Tom Price. By coincidence, the family knew of Glenyce’s friend. It was agreed they would leave Nanutarra at dawn on the 11th of December, 1975.

Glenyce was camped about 30 metres away from the family who were to give her a lift in the morning. She was sleeping on the ground in her sleeping bag.

When the family rose at about 5.00am the 11th of December, 1975 and went to collect Glenyce from her campsite they discovered that both Glenyce and her belongings were gone. They searched up and down the river for about an hour to no avail leading the family to think she must have left with someone else so they eventually departed Nanutarra for Tom Price.

En route, the family could not pass the Beasley River so were forced to camp there for another two days during which time they did not see any other vehicles pass. They arrived in Tom Price on the 13th of December 1975, but only realised that Glenyce was missing several days later when they visited her girlfriend. A missing persons report was lodged on the 19th of December 1975.

When last sighted on the 10th of December, 1975, Glenyce was wearing a long, blue cottton or cheesecloth skirt, an Indian style cream coloured, button-up top and a pair of strap on sandals. She had a small haversack, a green sleeping bag and an Indian style shoulder bag and was swimming and reading and by the riverbank.

Her bank account has not been accessed since the 9th of December, 1975 in Carnarvon.

I know you directed this at petedavo, but I thought I'd add this article as it has more info about the dates (it was in 2002). That puts it closer to the Morey conviction (and others that he's a POI in) than it seemed when I watched the program (or maybe I missed that part).

It also explains why they may have disregarded it for Claremont. However, I am baffled as to why they didn't look into the guy for other crimes. Claremont wasn't the only thing happening.

Short of.
If the perp acted upon rumours and embellished stories about the Leopold case. Remember there was no internet then, so the perp wouldn't be able to verify facts from innuendo and verify who was who.
You'll find interesting old newspaper articles from Trove in previous posts upon this thread.

A bit more about Sharon Fulton. Although it was in the same year as the Birnies, the link was investigated and discounted. The article also gives a different location. Makes you wonder...

"According to WA Police, the last confirmed sighting of Sharon was at the WA Sound and Coordination Centre in Wangara about 9.30am on March 18, 1986. She was dropping off her three-year-old son. "

I've wondered if Lisa Govan could be the work of the CSK.

It's not long after the spate of killings in Claremont, especially taking into account that Lisa Brown went missing in the intervening period. It is a woman heading home after a night out who just vanishes from an otherwise populated area. I think the bikie venue is a red herring, unless there's evidence about which we are unaware that links her to them.

(Am I supposed to put this in the CSK thread? Unsure as it's not directly related to that, just musing about her disappearance.)

Not very much to go on in her case, though.

There was talk over in the CSK thread about this - IIRC someone said they knew a Telstra colleague of BRE and they were working away in Kalgoorlie at the time of Lisa’s disappearance.
However I don’t know if this was ever substantiated or just a rumour?? I don’t remember which CSK thread number it was on but it was discussed not that long after the arrest when people where speculating about other possible cases the alleged CSK may have been involved in.

Regarding Sharon Fulton, there are a few odd things about when she was last seen.

As already pointed out, different last locations.

But also, what about the fact that her husband "later" said he had "dropped her at the East Perth railway station"? Why did he only add that "later"? Did this happen? If so, was it investigated? If not, why would he say that?

Plus that's inconsistent with saying he found her gone when he came home at Midday.

Then there's the fact that it says he had last seen her four days prior, which is inconsistent with dropping her at the station.

Not to mention that it is very unclear about why he had last seen her four days prior. Is that because he worked away sometimes (possible for someone in the military)?

So much missing from that picture, and concerning inconsistencies from the husband.
