Best outcome!!!!! I am left wishing Bayley had the same 'street wise' judge.

Thank You for posting Fuskier!

This is a fantastic outcome! Does this mean a long-overdue precedent has now been set and other judges can follow suit?

Perhaps the fact that Sarah's mum is taking action against the state for failure to ensure the safety of the community is helping the judiciary to think a little more about the consequences of their sentencing.

For me, this case highlights even more - we need to ensure that those we love stay AWAY from drugs.

They only lead to pain and heartache.

Couldn't agree more Jenelle. Whilst I'd never blame Sarah or her friends for leading her to drugs and therefore leading her to her death, people need to remember that NOTHING good EVER comes from drugs!!!
They do so much damage in so many ways :(

Cafferkey killer, Steven James Hunter, appeals against life sentence

BY COURT REPORTER SARAH FARNSWORTH
UPDATED 55 MIN AGO

The man who murdered Melbourne woman Sarah Cafferkey has lodged an appeal against his life sentence.

Hunter had just finished serving a period of parole before the killing.

Supreme Court Justice Kevin Bell called Hunter a "serious violent offender" and said he would remain a threat even in old age.

Hunter's father Murray called the sentence unfair and said his son did not get enough rehabilitation after his first murder.

Hunter told a police interview that he wanted to be "locked up for forever".

This one has a bit more info on what happened in the days leading up to, on the day and the following days :( It's so sad reading it all...

It is terrible to read. Strange that he approached 2 (if I read correctly) different friends to assist him with disposing of Sarah's body - have those guys been charged with anything? Seems like they didn't rush to the police to tell what they knew when everyone was searching for Sarah. Apart from Hunter himself being a monster, it's frightening to think that there are also people out there who are willing to keep horrific knowledge and information to themselves, in the name of some creepy sense of mateship or loyalty.

I can't believe that he's appealing! It's bloody disgusting!!!

Appealing a Magistrates’ Court decision

Get legal advice before lodging an appeal. A lawyer can advise you on whether your sentence was appropriate. The decision might feel really unfair but this does not mean that you will definitely get a better result if you appeal. It is possible that you will get a heavier penalty.

Time limits
You only have 28 days from when the magistrate sentences you to appeal.

You need the County Court judge’s permission if you want to appeal after 28 days. You must show the judge that:

there was some exceptional circumstance or reason why you did not appeal in time
the prosecution’s case will not be harmed by the delay.

... or fear?

(They are having this problem with the Robert Martinez/Chantal Barnett case)

I just saw a promo that Sarah's mum is going to be speaking tomorrow night (Thursday 24/10) on The Project Ch 10 about SH's appeals to change his sentence, in case anyone is interested.

The promo showed Sarah's mum tending Sarah's grave, and saying "he got what he deserved .. that is what he should get."

The main things I got from tonight's interview with Noelle ...

- She is holding a march on Sunday 10th November (anniversary of Sarah's death) in Melbourne to remind people, and to keep fighting the fight to keep Hunter and others like him behind bars.
- Sarah was scheduled to go into drug rehab two days after Hunter murdered her
- While she feels bad for Hunter's crap upbringing, he is an adult and had a choice .. to do right, or to do wrong, no excuses

Parole Reforms Pass State Parliament After Adult Parole Board Review
by MATT JOHNSTON HERALD SUN OCTOBER 31, 2013 12:01AM

COMMUNITY safety is now written in law as the most important consideration for parole decision-making, after the first reforms to the system passed State Parliament.

The law changes were based on recommendations from a review of the Adult Parole Board by former High Court judge Ian Callinan, following the rape and murder of Jill Meagher.

Corrections Minister Edward O'Donohue said the law changes passed yesterday would allow for a full-time chair of the parole board, and for time limits on board appointments.

Some welcome progress towards reviewing the operation of the Adult Parole Board.
