"He (Vincent Stanford) never had a girlfriend in his life because of his autism. He had a problem connecting to people so he couldnt look a girl in the eye or speak to her,' Mr Vandersteen said.
'He was more comfortable talking to animals than people.'
'Once we went to Belgium for a day trip and we went to my friends bar. Vincent had a whisky and a beer and straight away threw up. I remember afterwards I had to put him in the car and he slept for three or four hours."
His former employer has revealed the Tasmanian-born cleaner had trouble reading social situations and would hardly ever speak.
Stanford initially came work for Mrs Antonisse and her husband, Richard, at their industrial cleaning company after leaving school and quitting his job on a cargo barge at the age of 17.
The couple claim they were told by his mother he suffered from autism.
They resolved to help him and read up on the disorder on Google.
The Antonisses claim Stanford initially struggled with normal social behaviour.
'He was monosyllabic. On a 15-mile car journey he would not speak,' Mr Antonisse remembered.
'If a client had a problem and spoke to him he just wouldn't answer he would just look at the ground.'
Mr Antonisse also claimed Stanford struggled with personal hygiene, leading clients to complain about the smell.
'He sweated so much and it smelled of s***. He didn't shave or wash or wear deodorant. I had to teach him to do all that and buy him deodorant. His armpits were like Bob Marley,' Mr Antonisse told Daily Mail Australia.
But gradually their interest made him more socially competent. He passed his driving licence and became 'a really hard worker'.
The couple claim Stanford showed traits of autism such as disliking when his routine was changed
