I guess Stephanie's items that were sent to be pawned have been kept for evidence so her family has to wait until after the trial. I guess, in the grand scheme of things, it's not as important as seeing justice served.

Pyschiatric material sought from Netherlands for Stephanie Scott case leads to delay

November 25, 2015 The family of murdered Leeton school teacher Stephanie Scott sat in stony-faced silence in Griffith Court House on Wednesday morning as they heard the case had been adjourned to February 25...

Hard to credit that info from Holland can take 7 months. It must be being sent by sailboat. Way back within the first day or so of Stanford being a suspect, then arrested, there were many stories out of Holland by former neighbours , friends, I think one employer and his wife etc..

February it is, then. Why do I get the distinct impression that these two men are not at all uncomfortable in their Leeton custodial arrangement? Otherwise you would think they would be pressing a bit for some sort of resolution to their predicament. . Obviously, not a bit of it.

" ... The court heard psychiatric material was being sought from the Netherlands in relation to the matter and it was not expected to arrive in Australia until the end of January. It would then take a further 10 to 15 days before it was translated"...

Why can't psych evidence be translated into English in the Netherlands to ensure 'accurate meaning' of interpreted words etc? :gaah:

Will they go for grounds of insanity or similar?

Justice for Stephanie.

it would be a rare Dutch Psychiatrist who didn't speak , read and write superb English. How else would he/she keep up with the demands of that profession? .. I don't buy that story at all. It sounds dodgy ,and something just plucked out of the air ...

I don't know what kind of psyche trouble Vincent had, because his employer, Joss Constructions, never mentioned any illness, and Vincent must have had a police check working with children, and what's more, he worked unsupervised , in a remote area. Remote as in off the beaten track for any attending Psychiatric medical attention.

No doctor ever came forward as Vincent being one of his patients in that area, or any other.

It would be odd if the mere event of moving to Australia was considered a cure in and of itself. I cant imagine the stress of leaving Europe, trying to find a job in Australia, moving inland, and with all that infers , the heat, the isolation, the long long distances from anything to anywhere, the housing shortage, the lack of friends, relatives, peripheral support, language difficulties ( they speak English with a strong Dutch accent ) you would think if he / they had a known condition, they would never have left Holland, with it's known medical expertise, to the unknown in Australia.

Will they go for grounds of insanity or similar?

Justice for Stephanie.

I reckon it would be a hell of a gamble for the both of them to claim this, ( same disease? same timeline of onset and manifestation? one murders and one keeps quiet and sells off the belongings of the victim...be interesting, if nothing else )...of course, that implies that they would be pleading guilty, on those grounds.. That hasn't arisen so far...

Anyways... I am presuming it is the defence, that is, Vincent 's lawyer.. ( I wouldn't think both had the same lawyer, this would be a conflict of interest, and this report doesn't say exactly who's lawyer is awaiting the stuff from the Netherlands.. could be Markus, could be Vincent) who , having been delegated to the case by Legal Aid , are a bit behind the starting blocks, and also, having to deal with the non communicative Vincent, and/or the recalcitrant Markus.

Still. .. a hard hot day in Griffith for Steph's mother , father, the boyfriend.. how truly terrible, ..

"He (Vincent Stanford) never had a girlfriend in his life because of his autism. He had a problem connecting to people so he couldn’t look a girl in the eye or speak to her,' Mr Vandersteen said.

'He was more comfortable talking to animals than people.'

'Once we went to Belgium for a day trip and we went to my friend’s bar. Vincent had a whisky and a beer and straight away threw up. I remember afterwards I had to put him in the car and he slept for three or four hours."

His former employer has revealed the Tasmanian-born cleaner had trouble reading social situations and would hardly ever speak.

Stanford initially came work for Mrs Antonisse and her husband, Richard, at their industrial cleaning company after leaving school and quitting his job on a cargo barge at the age of 17.

The couple claim they were told by his mother he suffered from autism.

They resolved to help him and read up on the disorder on Google.

The Antonisses claim Stanford initially struggled with normal social behaviour.

'He was monosyllabic. On a 15-mile car journey he would not speak,' Mr Antonisse remembered.

'If a client had a problem and spoke to him he just wouldn't answer he would just look at the ground.'

Mr Antonisse also claimed Stanford struggled with personal hygiene, leading clients to complain about the smell.

'He sweated so much and it smelled of s***. He didn't shave or wash or wear deodorant. I had to teach him to do all that and buy him deodorant. His armpits were like Bob Marley,' Mr Antonisse told Daily Mail Australia.

But gradually their interest made him more socially competent. He passed his driving licence and became 'a really hard worker'.

The couple claim Stanford showed traits of autism such as disliking when his routine was changed

'In Leeton, he landed a casual job with cleaning company Colin Joss & Co, who have a contract with the Department of Education in NSW.

Senior manager at the company Fleur Dooley told Daily Mail Australia Stanford had worked for them since October last year.

She explained he had passed national criminal record checks and worked at multiple schools in the area, as well as the local TAFE.'

no record of autism, or aspergers, or whatever else here in AU.. nothing about it on his employment record, no mention of it as a matter of being treated medically, anywhere, no mention of any special arrangements being made by Colin Joss ( employer) re his 'condition' and his placement..

Just a quick comment: No information would be made available to employers or media regarding medical conditions without the permission of the patient. This area is subject to Australian Privacy Laws and Health Records Laws. However, if such info were available, then it could be accessed for Court by the relevant legal authorities IMO.

This case may highlight the deficiencies of our Australian criminal police checks for employment when a person has migrated from overseas. This case may also highlight people who migrated from overseas living in our community with substantial mental health disorders without corresponding medical records or case management.

Expecting a family to care for and assist with adjustment through a major change, for such a person, is too much for them to expect - without systemic support.

As far as we know, this person has slipped through the gaps in our migration system.
My opinion only.

Nothing you have said there is in error, Fuskier.. the only thing is , and I had to remind myself of it, is, they were not immigrants, . except for the mother Annike, who was re immigrating to AU , the three boys were in fact returning citizens of AU, born in AU and merely expatriated and therefore not subject to checks re immigration. .....

It is odd that in that news thingy, there are people who , apparently , are in the family and quite au fait with the autism of Vincent.. no mention of Markus with this condition. This is back in Holland, and the mother tells these people, according to the report that Vincent has this ... but a veil of silence comes over here in AU in regard to this aspect of Vincent's situation.

How dangerous was this, if the family of Vincent is well aware of his Autism, and they keep silent when he gets a job in a school.. ...... the only condition seems to be that the twin brother isn't allowed to reside in the home ... ( or even in the same state) ...

In June, safety concerns over the hiring of external contractors were raised when 26-year-old teacher Stephanie Scott was allegedly murdered by a cleaner who had been contracted to clean Leeton High School through an external company.
Ms Scott's alleged killer, 24-year-old Vincent Stanford, had passed police background checks before beginning work at the Colin Joss & Co cleaning company.
Mr Stanford allegedly sexually assaulted Ms Scott before dumping her body in bushland in Griffith in the state's north.
According to its website Colin Joss & Co is contracted to clean more than 1000 schools across the state.
A spokesman for the Department of Education downplayed any risks associated with engaging external contractors in school environments.
"Safety checks are a contractual obligation for service providers," he said.
Employees working in schools currently have to undergo working with children checks and department safety checks before they can be employed on school grounds.
The spokesman said no further safety checks had been instituted since Ms Scott was killed six months ago.

Thanks Trooper. I did not refer to 'Immigration'. I referred to 'migration' meaning from one place to another:
http://www.diffen.com/difference/Immigration_vs_Migration
"While immigration means for an individual or a family to move to a new country from their country of origin, the word migration denotes the act of moving from one place to another..."

Sure VS and MS may have Australian citizenship, but they emigrated to the Netherlands as children, were educated/socialised and lived there for many years, before they migrated back to Australia as adults.
The alleged accused was permitted to migrate back to Australia with an alleged substantial mental health disorder.

Were there no checks of mental health or criminal records simply because he was considered 'expat'?

It is not surprising that Australian employment checks did not bring up any areas of concern because there appear to be no records of mental health or criminal activity here in Australia.
Surely, this has implications for our 'migration' system?

When 'expats' who have lived overseas for many years seek to migrate back to Australia, their educational, employment, mental health and criminal records need to be checked IMO for their re-settlement impact upon local communities and our welfare/criminal systems etc. The country of emigration and the country of migration need to collaborate with regards to relevant records.
My opinion only.

Just for you Troop: http://www.vocabulary.com/articles/chooseyourwords/emigrate-immigrate-migrate/
emigrate/immigrate/migrate
Emigrate means to leave one's country to live in another. Immigrate is to come into another country to live permanently. Migrate is to move, like bird in the winter.

Tips for disclosing a mental health condition

There is no obligation to tell your employer about a mental health condition if it does not affect how well you do your job.

Ozols says if you do decide to be open about your mental health in the workplace, there are a number of aspects to consider.

Does this person need to know?
Do you have a good rapport with them?
How comfortable are you sharing your personal information with them?
Do you feel confident they will maintain your privacy and confidentiality?
She also says timing is important. Try to make an appointment with enough time for a lengthy conversation. Also make sure it is a good time for the person you are meeting with and they aren't distracted by other concerns.

Barnes says, "Disclosing comes down to how comfortable you are and the skills you have to have those conversations". However once a mental health condition is disclosed people can involve their doctor as a team member in developing a graded return to work plan.

She also said it's important to remember that once you have disclosed a mental health condition you are protected by antidiscrimination law.
