So, he seems to care a lot for his dolls. He takes them for drives and walks in the pram. IMO, not the mind of a sane man.

From what I've read though, he did (in a distorted way), seem to be somewhat be taking care of her.

Again, from what I've read, it appears as though she wasn't sexually abused. I hope not. That photo released from her in hospital, I doubt they would release a photo if she had gone through the torture of sexual abuse.

Maybe he saw her as an extension of his doll collection, you know, a life like doll.

I'm definitely not defending him, trying to figure out what makes him tick. He is definitely mad, and bad. Just not sure which personality is the most prevalent.

I hope you’re right. And you may be. He reminds me somewhat of those “reborn” doll people who collect these super expensive, realistic-looking dolls and care for them as if they were real babies. A lot of them seem to have some sort of mental disturbance, IMO. Grief. Depression. Etc.

It’s therapeutic for them but some post videos of them feeding, dressing, changing, these dolls. The dolls don’t move of course but the parents treat them as if they do. It’s an elaborate, adult play. It makes me feel super uncomfortable.

But whatever the motivation, this dude abducted a real child and held her prisoner as an anguished nation searched for her and her parents suffered.

He’s a danger to society.

My daughter, if CS age would immediately be in her element, however not all children like dolls, my daughter has a keen interest in collecting not so much to play with but to keep boxed and displayed, condition is a massive thing to her, and it's evident the person who collected the dolls pictured liked them in the correct order. Usually in displays like this the most important ones go at the top, or eye level. Dolls get grouped together on the range, ones from the same release go on the same shelf, it looks like this has been done to a degree.
:) Exactly the same system is implemented in shops - "top shelf" products being the most expensive.
But the most coveted place for producers is "eye level", and also those next to the tills.
Mind you - specialists organize all this.

And 20 years in prison, isn't going to fix this. I hope that there is a longer sentence or alternative. All he will be is more dangerous, as he will spend his time figuring out how not to get caught next time. There isn't enough meds or mental health care treatment to fix this.

The first priority after finding the child is to immediately re-establish a sense of safety and stability, and to reunite them with their family.

The most important thing is to avoid intrusive, probing questioning straight away as this can be frightening and distressing. It's a normal response for the child to try and not think about what they've just been through.

They will take their own time before they're able to share details of their experiences, and will need considerable support and care to do this.

Intrusive questioning may re-traumatise the child. For survivors of trauma, being asked to focus on their memories and experiences of fear can be distressing and bring back the terror of the experience, particularly if they're not ready to think about the events.

Police forces have skilled interviewers who understand and avoid this when recovering a child, and perform the interviews gradually.

There are open questions about any other sort of trauma may have experienced, but for now we don't have any information on this. We might never know all the details and we need to respect the family's right to privacy.

Some children might benefit from counselling, particularly if they have severe anxiety symptoms or have been held for a long time.

He has to prove he suffered a loss for that to succeed.

One does not have to prove financial loss to be successful in a defamation suit. Pain and suffering can be a huge component, and in this case it's not like the info was disseminated within a small community .. people from all over the world were reading about him and seeing his face. IMO, there will be a substantial Offer to Amend; if not, I can see a jury really handing them their $$ butts on a platter.

The article linked below also sets out re Offer to Make Amends, Defences, etc.

Basically ...

What Needs To Be Proven?
Generally, the elements for a successful claim of defamation are:

  1. Publication – the defamatory statement has been published to a third party. The publication can be written or oral publication;
  2. Defamatory matter – An ordinary person would take the meaning of the material to be defamatory;
  3. Identification – The person claiming defamation must be able to be identified through the publication. They do not have to be specifically named, but a reasonable person who is familiar with the relevant circumstances must be able to identify them.
  4. No lawful excuse – there must not be a lawful excuse for the publication (defences to defamation are considered further below).

A shoutout to our Aussie friends for all the info on the court system there. I have never followed an Australian trial and your info is a great help.

This is as good a starting place as any

(I'm a Pom not an Aussie, but the systems are very similar)

Was there anything about the courts you particularly wanted to know?

(edited to tidy up sone dreadful typing)

Right. This is what I was going to ask you. What is the likelihood that he would have let her play with them, in your opinion?

After googling, I'm guessing that you are not a pomeranian or a unit of work, but rather an English person? I had never heard that term before. (Is it an acceptable term for people to use?)

Are you or any other member here familiar whether the system provides procedures for releasing accused people on bond prior to trial? Just wondering. Thanks.

Defence has not applied for bail, and i don't expect they will, and nor would it likely be granted given the weight of evidence against the accused

Yes, there is provision for bail, but his lawyer does not seem to have requested it at this stage.

I think it is unlikely the accused wouid be granted bail in circumstances such as these. Thus link has info on bail, and you can navigate from it to other aspects of the court ps system

The police weren't able to interview him due to his unstable mental state.

They’re always suddenly too mentally unstable to be prosecuted. AFTER they’re caught. Before that they’re sound enough to pull off a terrible crime, house a kidnapping victim in secret, and be able to hide his crime and his victim, despite a nation searching for her.

He wasn’t babbling in the streets, screaming and acting crazy before he was caught. He was able to shop, and be in public as he hid the child.

Now suddenly he’s so stark raving mad he can’t be interviewed.
