[FONT=&amp]The foster brother of slain schoolgirl Tiahleigh Palmer has been released on parole after spending 16 months in custody on incest and perjury charges.
Trent Thorburn was released from prison in Brisbane on Friday morning, having spent 12 months in custody before being sentenced to four years jail in September.
He pleaded guilty to having sex with the 12-year-old girl and lying to the crime and corruption commission.
His father Rick Thorburn is awaiting trial for Tiahleigh's murder, while brother Josh and mother Julene were spared jail time after pleading guilty to perjury charges last year.
Tiahleigh's body was found on the banks of the Gold Coast's Pimpama River in November 2015 and police swooped on her foster family the following September.
Her mother Cyndi Palmer has criticised the sentences handed out to the family and on Friday hit out at Trent's release.
"I have confirmation, Trent Thorburn was released from prison this morning on parole after serving the rest of his s....y sentence!!" She wrote on Facebook, alongside the hashtag #nojusticehere

I have to agree with Cyndi

12 months!!... Christ almighty!.. what DOES one have to do in Qld to serve a reasonable sentence??.......

rotten little sod.

Lets pray Rick gets life. Murder up here is life. He was not cooperating with the prosecution and was very tight lipped. Next hearing is in mid Feb. He still has not lodged a plea. If he pleades not guilty then its going to be a harrowing drawn out trial. Once the murder charges and court has been dealt with then the sexual abuse charges will be heard re the day care children.

I didn’t realise the other things are seperate so thanks for explaining Champaign.

Yeah totally separate charges. Murder charge now the most serious so that will be dealt with first. The other stuff will follow.

I can't see any justice here at all. He had sex with a vulnerable 12 year old child who was in the foster system in their home. She was 12. The foster mother did not take up the required duty of care to Tiahleigh and in fact covered up the harm done by other family members. I would really really like to see sentencing that fits the despicable acts of harm done by this family - it's very frustrating and I am so angry and sad for the seeming indifference of the courts.

Tiahleigh was only 12!

12!!

IIRC she didn’t want to go home and asked to stay at a friends house. I think she was getting the blame from all sides. To think the ‘mother’ of the house was blaming her as well. No protection. Poor sweet girl had nowhere to hide. It must have been a living hell for her.

The whole evil family should starve in a hell-like goal cell.

I'll never forget how Julene rocked up with a ****-eating grin to the police searching her home.
I want to say clueless, but she is probably something much worse.

Can I have a kick?

Poor Tiahleigh, my heart weeps for her. What a travesty of Justice for her family so far, :(
Lets hope the in this case that was responsible for her murder gets LWOP to sit in his cell and think about what he has taken so cruelly from Tiahleigh and the family that loves her and grieves for her.

It is a gamble that some crims like to make. .. Thorburn may feel that a judge would be less emotional about crimes involving the murder of children, unlike a rabble of jurors..

Gittany thought the same way.. and we all know how that ended up.

I am curious as to how QLD will come down on this decision. It is his right to request such a thing .. would public need to have him judged by a jury of his peers over-ride the accused rights?

I just don't know.

I hope not. On the other hand, a judge only trial is rarely, if ever overturned on any point of decision, and renders an appeal merely an exercise in dotting I's and crossing T's....

Old Rick is really spinning this thing out as thin as it will go.

Hi Trooper
Personally I don't have a problem with judge only trial. There are 3 judges, is that right? Having been on a jury for murder, it is the luck of the draw and jurors are bedazzled by all the medical and legal arguments. We as a society failed Tai

I am not certain that 3 judges are assigned, BN, in the QLD Supreme Court, in a murder trial as requested by the accused.. That sounds a tremendous acquisition of rare commodities, ie, judges.. I think it's only one on the bench thru the trial. It is for NSW and the ACT and VIC..... but again, this is QLD we are referring to , nothing is quite on track.

That said, when all consideration is done in regard to this kind of request from an accused murderer, the situation then turns it's eye onto the judge to be assigned to hear, alone, a case of this nature. Good health, good record, eye for detail, plus the very patience of God Almighty Himself would be among the first requirements. .. the reason for granting it would have to be unarguable, also, mainly because Thorburn , while he is entitled to be judged by his peers ( that's you and me ) his peers ( again, you and me ) are also entitled to judge him, and it's a matter of who's legal strong arm has the most power.

An interesting zigzag to the case, but only if one is into the legal jiggery-pokery stuff. Which I am, deeply.

As time goes on, it becomes more fixed in my mind that Thorburn didn't pull this entire crime off all alone. Someone, at some stage, either during the murder or the transport and disposal of darling Tiah , assisted him. ..

His lies about this will turn him inside out to a half decent prosecutor and QLD has some of the real aces of the genre right there in Brisbane.

My gut tells me Mrs Thorburn helped dispose of the body. We know Tiah was put in the shed at some stage. Boys were told to get on with their business. Trent off to work. Not sure about Josh's movements . Mrs T was left to clean up the mess. Help with the body as a good wife does. I would be surprised if a judge only trial is granted. Its not something we see up here not matter how high profile the case.

It has just been announced on the news that Rick Thorburn has pleaded GUILTY to the murder of Tialeigh Palmer.
He will be sentenced at a later date -- the 9th of May (I think).
I hope this doesn't mean that he carries the entire guilt himself -- it is obvious that there was a second party involved in the disposal of Tiah -- that means means guilty after the event.
