Thank you so much Anais for posting all this additional information. It confirms our worst fears. If he doesn't receive a long sentence, it may possibly have an even greater effect on future backpacker numbers which were already down 50% in the last 12 months re those from the UK and Scandinavian countries.

I've never read this before (BBM) :

The [rescuers] were five school mates from Melbourne, on a round-Australia fishing trip, who rescued the missing German girl after, inexplicably, a group of off-duty cops kept fishing instead of leading the search.

There was a bit about the off-duty cops before but not about them keeping on fishing more like they were scared of them.

Also from the article, the Brazilian is getting on with her life.
"The Brazilian girl came to Adelaide for the trial and has stayed throughout, determined to witness today’s moment, when a member of the jury stood and pronounced her attacker guilty.

Now that her ordeal is over, she will travel some more. She says Far North Queensland is next on her list.

She still uses the couchsurfing app, though not as much as she once did. She still accepts rides from people she has just met. As she says, the freedom to travel at a whim, to make plans as you go, is what she loves about the road. "

He [Pearce] said all but one of the women rejected his offers after communicating with him via SMS and Facebook — but the one who went took out an “insurance policy”.

“She had been taking photos of the car, of him, of all sorts of things, and making it abundantly clear to the accused that she had sent these photos off to her family and friends,” he said.

“In a sense, it was her insurance policy — she had made a point of letting him know she had identified him in those photos and they had been sent here and there, to more than one person.

The difference in societies where other cultures do no necessarily trust police officers .. unless they just said .. "We are undercover police officers" and unless there is ID we would also think it was a line.

  • As they left #SaltCreek, the group encountered a group of off-duty police officers fishing - but Brazilian didn't trust them."

From an earlier post of mine

Prior to the trial, Mr Pearce sought to have statements written by the Japanese woman and 11 other backpackers — one Australian, the others foreign nationals — tendered as evidence.

He said they included:

A FRENCH WOMAN who, in November 2015, wanted to go to Melbourne via the Great Ocean Rd.
A GERMAN WOMAN who, in November 2015, wanted to go to Melbourne via the Great Ocean Rd.
A FRENCH WOMAN who, in January 2016, wanted to go to Alice Springs.
A FRENCH WOMAN who, in January 2016, wanted to go to Darwin.
AN AUSTRALIAN WOMAN who, in January 2016, wanted to go to NSW.
A CANADIAN WOMAN who, in January 2016, wanted to go to Melbourne.
A GERMAN WOMAN who, in January 2016, wanted to go to Melbourne.
A GERMAN WOMAN who, in January 2016, wanted to go to Melbourne.

“There is an escalation of interest in travelling with these women,” Mr Pearce said.

“It shows that he has got this interest in being alone and travelling alone to isolated places with these young women, just like he did with (the German) and (the Brazilian).

“Combine that with the Viagra and the condoms — there was also a bottle of passion pop in the car (at Salt Creek) — it indicates what his true state of mind was.

“When taken collectively, they give the whole trip its sexual aspect.”

We now know that only one woman accepted a ride with RH but the BIB is what makes this so interesting when read in conjunction with the last para.

Mr Pearce said all of the backpackers declined the man’s offers — except for the Japanese woman, who accompanied him to Salt Creek on November 23 and 24, 2015.
“She was going to Melbourne, she never got to Melbourne because the accused claimed he had to go back (to Adelaide),” he said.

“Nothing sexual happened there, and they returned.

“Something stopped him from taking her to Melbourne as he had planned, whether it was because there was a genuine issue he had to deal with in Adelaide or whether it was because he got cold feet or whether it was that he knew, as he must have, that she had communicated to a number of people his identity and whereabouts.”

There's an excellent video in this article. You'll recall that Boucat suggested it was ridiculous to believe that the German was on top of the 4WD as it was 20m from the café. Look how absolutely deserted this area is, no café or anything else in sight, and it's surrounded by dunes. It's so obvious now why the knife and bikini top weren't found, and she was on top of the 4WD for 1-2 hours. Who knows how far they travelled during this time.

Going back 13 months, there were 26 tipoffs at the time from the public. I know this link has been posted earlier.

The #SaltCreek trial has resumed with evidence from Jeremy Handley, a police officer who examined accused's computers and mobile phone.

Detective Brevet Sergeant Handley says laptop was recovered from under accused's bed. Phone was in 4WD on beach at #SaltCreek.

Handley says he found 95 pornographic images, among thousands of normal images, on the laptop.
He says 37 showed women wearing some form of mouth gag.
He says 34 images showed women showed women with arms or wrists bound, 29 with hands and feet bound.
He says 5 images showed women with their hands bound, and 20 involved sexual acts including penetration.
Handley outlines 10 Internet searches using "rape terms", carried out on accused's laptop, between Nov '15 and Jan '16

He says another search was a website for a business selling "bondage products".

Handley says the iPhone, found in accused's 4WD, had two pornographic videos plus stills from those videos.

One video featured 1 bound woman, the second featured 2. Each was last accessed on Feb 7, '16 - 2 days before alleged #SaltCreek incident.

Victims Rights Commissioner Michael O'Connell described the women as "beautiful, young people who now deserve the sense of justice that's been given to them". Outside court he read a statement on behalf of the German woman and said the verdict brought a "sense of justice".

"The jury has found the offender responsible for his crimes which he will now be punished," he said.

"He inflicted life-threatening injuries that have had profound effects. She knows she survived because other people, good Samaritans who came to her aid."

The woman wanted to thank the people who helped at the Salt Creek Roadhouse, the fisherman, first aiders and Flinders Medical Centre staff.

Mr O'Connell said the women were "strong, forthright, very, very good witnesses and they wanted to see justice done".

"They are both extremely brave.

"They demonstrated that bravery at the time of the incident … They demonstrated it as witnesses … they are beautiful young people who now deserve the sense of justice that's been given to them."

Ah, sorry DRT - I do remember that post of yours. I just didn't put two and two together.

Well I said it was mine but it was a response to JJ's copy of the tweets.

How long until sentencing takes place. His name is still suppressed so there is obviously a hell of a lot more to this case.

you can see how she was able to hang on with that grate. Lucky girl!!! I must say I would have found him guilty of attempted murder. He ran her over for God's sake. The fact she didn't die was a miracle not because he didn't have the intent IMO

BBM

Me too!

This is madness! These girls were brave to bring this cretin to justice, they've saved other's lives. He would have kept going and obviously getting worse.

Of course it's attempted murder! Oh for the love of Pete.

After an 11 day trial the man at the centre of the Salt Creek backpacker case has been found guilty of kidnapping and assault charges but NOT guilty of attempted murder.?!?

I just don't get it, was this jury on happy gas?
He ran over her MULTUPLE TIMES, CLOUTED HER WITH A HAMMER AROUND HER HEAD SEVERAL TIMES.

The SA Supreme Court jury delivered its verdict on Saturday, finding the man guilty of six charges including indecent assault, aggravated kidnapping and endangering life.

But he was acquitted of attempted murder, with the 11 jurors instead finding him guilty of the lesser charge of aggravated attempted causing serious harm with intent.
