thanks for that, I just read it, I already do not like where this inquest is going......... do you think the FP's are paying for this barrister or the NSW government? Is the FP's position in this inquiry extaordinary to anyone else or is it just me?
At a guess, I'd say FPs are paying for their own representation. I wouldn't think they'd qualify for Legal Aid. Tentatively, if William is found to have disappeared through human intervention, they might then qualify for a victims of crime payout? As to extraordinary, I'm afraid I'm not seeing what you're seeing.

Although the case in the above link is about a child who tragically died whilst in foster care in NSW in 2014. I have posted the link because the (same) Deputy State Coroner (Ms Grahame) and Counsel Assisting (Mr Craddock) are conducting the inquest regarding William.

Its a extremely harrowing read but gives a very clear understanding of the processes involved. All major parties were represented by individual legal counsel.

The journey forward for all involved in William's inquest will indeed be tortuous.

Why do the foster parents have representation? Does their barrister get to ask questions of witnesses?

The foster parents' lawyer can ask questions of witnesses, and it sounds as if they have hired a very good senior lawyer.
I have a feeling there will be quite a few questions about who called who that morning, who left who messages, who said they would do the washing machine repair that Friday, who deleted their call log ... things like that.

During an inquest, families members and interested parties can ask questions of witnesses in a number of ways. Some families choose to employ a solicitor to ask questions on their behalf while other families choose to have one family member act as a representative. Alternatively, family can ask questions of witnesses through the Counsel Assisting the Coroner.

Paraphrasing ....

Lawyers for a man who was named as a POI, William Spedding, gathered beside William's parents.
Mr Craddock (counsel for coroner) asked William's parents how they were, they were sitting next to Jubes. (It does not say they were summoned.)
The inquest seeks to discover if William is still alive.
The investigation is still happening, active leads are being pursued.
Jubes says still plenty of policework to be done.
Paul Savage dialled in briefly, he will give evidence next year. (It does not say he was summoned.)
Spedding has received a summons to appear during the week-long inquest inquiry in March (before it restarts in August).
FACS has been ordered to provide a statement about William's removal by child protection workers, and their internal investigation. (The one we heard about to do with Spedding?)

Police chasing ‘active leads’ over missing William Tyrrell - December 19, 2018

It is my understanding that anyone who believes they have valuable information can apply to give evidence. After application and careful analysis of such evidence the Coroner may then instruct the issue of summons to attend.

Washing machine repairman Bill Spedding, who was named as a person of interest in the case but was never charged, was also represented by barrister Peter O’Brien.

"Just be very careful how you report this," he told journalists outside court.

Do lawyers usually warn/threaten journos?
Well, I guess that Chris Dawson's lawyer-brother sort of did just the other day .... "police!!"

Here are some of those older articles that raised a bit of discussion.

21 Sept 2014
Every home has been searched. The Sex Crimes Squad has verified the whereabouts of known offenders in the street or town.

3 sept 2016
From his house directly opposite William’s grandmother’s former home, an elderly man named Paul (surname withheld for privacy reasons) and his son, Sean, have watched long-time friends and neighbours slowly drift away from Benaroon Drive.

“A lot of them have moved,” he says. “One bloke left because he felt intimidated by the police. He had a few problems. He wasn’t a crook or a bad bloke, just a bit of a loner. He wanted out.”

“A recluse,” says Sean. “I think all of the attention sort of frightened him.”

“They were coming around checking everything and he got scared,” Paul says. “Just the fear of that.” He shrugs his shoulders. “You got to let them do their job and they’re still following up on everything. They’re doing a good job.”

William Tyrrell: fear in Kendall where little boy disappeared
Yes the underlined “ living on the street “ makes my ears prick up. Were BS and one of the neighbours prehaps aquainted by mutual interests ?

I believe this is a poorly written article. It would be a totally normal process for police to check if there were any known offenders living in the street or town at the time of William's disappearance.

The inquest is not about apportioning blame. The 'friendly' warning issued by said legal rep is a reminder for journos present to be mindful of potential false innuendo.

FP's silk may be acting on a pro bono basis.

Lawyers conducting defamation cases against MSM might give them a ‘friendly’ warning. Personally, I get the impression that Mr O’Brien isn’t a very nice man.

Wonder what the physical artefacts are..

"A massive brief of evidence will need to be compiled from physical artefacts, thousands of tip-offs and a "persons of interest" list hundreds of names long."
Coroner to look into William Tyrrell case

Weren't police looking very early on for some things which may have fallen from a car?
"Teams of officers in cars and on foot will scour roads in the 48 square-kilometre forest looking for items that may have been discarded from a vehicle"

I wonder why William’s BP weren’t legally represented at the Directions Hearing and/or haven’t applied to be granted leave to appear at the inquest under s.57?

(btw this is not a criticism of either Karlie or Brendan—I’m simply curious.)

Maybe it is just starting with that hot zone. If you were in there. Why?

A brief biography online says Gail Furness SC majored in journalism and dabbled in philosophy

She is the calm but persistent voice who, for two-and-a-half years, has publicly grilled confessed paedophiles, alleged child abusers, countless victims and many others about the magnitude of child sexual abuse in Australia.

Gail Furness SC was appointed as senior counsel assisting the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse when it began in September 2013. Yet until this week she was hardly a household name; instead overshadowed by whichever witness was giving evidence.

Now she is likely to be best remembered for her relentless questioning of Australia's most senior Catholic, Cardinal George Pell, who for months has resisted pressure to appear before the inquiry to answer questions about what he knew about alleged child abuse within Australia's Catholic Church.

Puzzling, for sure. Especially with the inclusion of Mr Savage. Was he the last person other than William’s FP to see him? Was he the first witness to William’s FM panicking when she couldn’t find him? If so, why haven’t other witnesses been mentioned as granted leave to appear and left scrabbling to engage legal representation at short notice? The mention of Mr Savage being granted leave came as a real shock to me, I can tell you.

Ms Furness is a formidable lady, that’s for sure. The quiet achiever.
