Hi, I'm fairly new and in the UK. We don't have poi status over here and I'm a little confused as to why BS has been one for so long. Surely if the police think he is involved in little Williams disappearance then they don't by the same token think he is a risk to children....or else he wouldn't be walking free. Also, being free to come and go couldn't a poi get rid of evidence, liase with other people that maybe involved, contact witnesses etc ect?

And just to add to what krig has said. In naming him, they have also alerted the public to what may be his propensities. Therefore, they are protecting the public in a way, as people will now be alert about him.

I think they must have some pretty clear indicators about him, to have been so bold as to call him a POI in the disappearance of a young child. Very few people here are named as a POI. Most highly-suspect people here are said to be "helping police with their inquiries" while the investigation is proceeding and until they are arrested.

True, SouthAussie. The media almost always uses the term, "is assisting police with their enquires" and the name is anonymous e.g. "A 60 year old man is assisting police. "
Very unusual that they have named Spedding.

Sorry for posting this now because it was a few pages back but I only just caught up.

At a previous job I had, we didn't have an office address advertised with our company name. The reason was, we went to our customers so we had no need for them to know our office address. Plus the office was totally not set up for a customer to walk into or we would have no customers .

This may be why BS doesn't advertise his address because it was simply the place he went back to do invoicing, ordering, scheduling etc without being interrupted.

The other question I had, is if you get a criminal record, is that for life?
I have never been in trouble so I have no clue but I wondered if after a certain period of time it was wiped, kinda like bad credit I guess?

I knew a family, whose kids went to school with mine, that had an appliance repair business. Their office was in their garage. He did service calls and did 99% of his work at his clients addresses. Only occasionally would he bring anything back to his place. Usually only if it was replaced and he was using the parts from the old one for future work.

Their business cards had no address either. Just a phone number and a website.

That was exactly like us only we weren't a repair business :) our business cards just had our PO box and our clients knew what suburb we were located in, they just didn't know where.

The Laurieton business address is still advertised on a 'pawnshops' website and on a 'cash loans' website.

http://www.pawnshops.net/store/Speddos_Pawnbroking_and_Loans/13021
https://www.cashstop.com.au/agent/speddos-pawnbroking-and-loans/

That business started in 2013, and the business name is still current. He hasn't yet cancelled it, even though the shop is said to be closed. Maybe he will just let it expire when it comes up for renewal in 2016.

But he does not seem particularly good at updating his listings, with his mobile phones listing still showing the Wellington address.

Interesting to see he was on the first floor.

I see there used to be another business on level 2 but I think that address has now changed.

Yes, that whole Pawn Shop thing is weird. He evidently does not run his repair business from that address. And if he was running around doing appliance repairs, who was running the pawn shop? And how does a small town of less than 2,000 people support one (existing) pawn shop, let alone two? :waitasec:

Yes Belz, a criminal record is for life.

Didn't they say the Pawn Shop was closed down already?

As well as the search of Mr Spedding's rented house, police had earlier raided a shop in Laurieton, about 10km away, where he had once run a pawn-broking business until closing it down because the town's 5500 population could not support it.

Also from that article, some pics:

That shed is pretty big, and the neighbour seems quite close. They seem to be able to look directly at the POI's yard and house.

Looks like a new washing machine wrapped in plastic, so evidently he stores them at his house.

yes it does make you wonder, especially as the other shop is on the same street.
His business maybe booming being the only one there now.

I posted the demographics for Laurieton earlier. That population is waaaay overstated. And didn't someone also put up a post earlier that said there is/was already an existing pawn shop in that town?

"In the 2011 Census the population of Laurieton is 1,931"

Oh, thanks Amee. So there is an existing pawn shop .. and on the same street. And I now see that it is at 40 Bold Street, Laurieton.

Who would open a SECOND Pawn Shop in a town of only about 2000? I would think that one would be MORE than enough.

I would think that one would be more than enough too. Especially as there are other pawn shops nearby ... two in Port Macquarie alone. And Port Macquarie has over 41,000 people, so it may be able to sustain two pawn shops. I don't even know how less than 2,000 people in Laurieton can sustain one existing pawn shop.

I wonder what Spedding's motivation was, to set up a second pawn shop in that small town. He apparently had only had a hire business before, and repairs of course - being a licensed electrician.

BS owned a pawn shop for several years in Wellington, NSW prior to moving to the central coast. So in essence he was probably opening another pawn shop (after moving to Laurieton) as that is what he was familiar with.

Then that makes sense. He probably had all the stock and needed to do something with it.
