I didn't want to say it but I often wonder why folks hike there when there are so many other more beautiful spots that are not right near the freeway/busy roads. But I know it is convenient if you don't have a ton of time, and maybe some people really do like to hike in less secluded areas.

I live just a couple of miles south of this area and have not seen the new homeless camps in the area but it is not surprising with the Zone closing.

I want to doubt this is as random as it sounds but with so little released yet... hard to guess

Being local, do you know if there’s apartments nearby that trail? I wonder if she was able to walk out her apt door to the trail? Just by looking at it, it seems wide open and safe.

Karina Vetrano?
Yep! That’s her. That was haunting.

I used to run early morning all the time (in the dark) like Eliza Fletcher. When that happened last year, I was done. Now I go to a gym unless it’s light out. When I hike, I will only go on trails where it’s open on both sides. Now, I guess that’s out as well.

With these cases, I think all females here can relate to the indescribable fear these women must have endured during those last minutes. It’s the nightmare scenario that is tucked away but still there, and then there you are.

This is nothing short of heartbreaking.

Another apparent situation of a young woman innocently walking/hiking/jogging who was heinously murdered by an evil . Not just evil but also a lowly coward who attacked a lone woman from behind.

Lauren appears to have been living a wonderful life. The kind of young woman who would contribute greatly and in positive ways to her community.

With the video, I strongly believe this evil doer's freedom will be gone soon. May justice be served before he harms anyone else. No matter what, Lauren's loved ones will miss her every minute - and there's no justice that can heal that pain.

MOO

ok, what about the video makes you think he will be caught soon?

First responders say they found Heike, who appeared to have suffered “trauma to her body.” Police said her remains were found where she would not have been “easily viewable by those that utilize the trail.”

Heike, an avid exercise enthusiast, was hiking on the Reach 11 trail just north of Phoenix at around 10 a.m. Friday morning when she was “attacked from behind and died as a result of her injuries,” Phoenix PD Homicide Lt. James Hester said during a Wednesday news conference. Hester described the attack as vicious and unconscionable.

Red color and bold by me.
Exactly. You said it, @TexLil.

And that person robbed her of the rest of her life, as well as taking her away from those who loved her.
Hoping that there will be an arrest based on good, solid evidence soon.

Great news!
I'm very anxious to hear how they got him - they must have had a good tip or more info than the video the public saw (maybe even DNA from her body?)

While his arrest location is relatively close, it's not ::that:: close (about 3 miles), and with the LE response there, it's not that they happened on him or something obviously.

Police confirming the suspect in Lauren Heike’s murder was arrested near the Catherine Townhomes —17212 North Scottsdale Road. Images being sent to me from the scene.

Ah ha!

My guess posted above ended up being right apparently! DNA got him.

This same AZ family reporter below (Peter Valencia) has posted a crime scene van is also on scene where the suspect was arrested.

#BREAKING UPDATE:
@azfamily
Investigates has learned that the suspect is a 23-year-old man who was linked through DNA evidence.
@mraimonditv
is in north Scottsdale tonight awaiting a news conference. Live coverage through 10 p.m. on http://azfamily.com/livestrea

There was a presser at 8:45 but the suspect's name wasn't released.

From a neighbor:

"It was around 6:00 p.m., I was walking my dog, saw about three SWAT trucks come in, 15 undercover vehicles pull up to a building," said Winter. "They literally blew the door down, went in, screaming ‘get on the ground! Get on the ground!’ They detained the supposed suspect, and brought him out. He sat there for a while, while they went inside and were searching and were interviewing people."'

More than once there were references to Lauren's killing being particularly heinous and feeling like the suspect could be recognized because of that (I'm guessing maybe they expected him to have blood on him?). I'm wondering if they were expecting possible resistance when they were arresting him, though that doesn't seem like that ended up being the case.

This is the first I saw that the person who found Lauren apparently recognized her from having seen her hiking there before:

According to a person living in the area, it was his wife who discovered Heike's body while she was walking her dog. They were familiar with Heike because she hiked the trail often, and lived in an apartment complex nearby.
