It certainly could happen that way, but the article says, "The key to solving the case was a tipster who called Tempe police on Friday afternoon and told them the victim’s name after viewing media reports, Pooley said. The tipster had been an acquaintance of the victim.

Within a few hours of learning Begay-Barakzai’s name, police arrested George..."

That sounds to me like the acquaintance knew her by that name.

I don't think that's any kind of covering garment in the FB photo (her FB seems to be gone, by the way). It looks like she's holding a gray fleece jacket up to her face, which might be religion or might be joking around with whoever took the photo, presumably the boyfriend.

I agree on the fact that the religion could be a joke on her FB given she's holding up just a fleece.

What struck me personally is it said an acquaintance identified her by her name. Thing is, the person hardly knew her and they knew her by the name I believe is fake. It didn't say a close friend or family member identified her by name.

It's almost like a page out of the Elizabeth Smart playbook.

I fear this is a young woman who was abducted off reservation or in tempe and forced to wear abaya and change her name in order to cover her Identity.

Her face, her poor beautiful face, suffered mass injury. As if someone didn't want her to be recognizable when found (and yes, crimes of passion often seek to destroy the face or identity of the victim).

And the name?

It just doesn't add up to me. I have so many ancestral Pueblan and Native friends and my gosh this girl just doesn't add up.

In all my time in AZ, I never met a Navajo woman who claimed Islam and kept her Navajo name. It's not impossible. It's just improbable.

If it were a joke, why would she claim an Islamic last name? And furthermore if she were truly Islamic as indicated by her change in name, why wouldn't she change her FULL name and omit her first Navajo name? And why wouldn't she be with a Muslim man?

I'm so confused with this case guys. Sorry just trying to make sense of it.

I didn't mean her religion was a joke. I meant she looked like she was hiding her face because she didn't want her picture taken, and she looks lighthearted about it, not angry or afraid. The vast majority of Muslim women in the US and worldwide do not cover their faces. Quite a high percentage don't even cover their hair.

You're right that it's odd no family has been mentioned. I found a couple of Navajo nation newspapers that mentioned her identity but didn't have anything personal. Maybe it just means she's alone. I had assumed that the hyphenated name plus religion meant that one of her parents, probably her father, was Pakistani and the other was Navajo, but you could be right about something funky going on. To me the fact she was using this name with other people and apparently had a life away from the boyfriend made it more likely it was her own name, but I can see why you think it points the other direction.

That seems to confirm that however unusual it might be, Barakzai is indeed her name. So sad that so much potential was cut off so young.

I heard back from my dentist friend re: the dental info I sent to him before our Jane Doe was identified.

This is what he said FWIW:

"This young lady was near completion of treatment indicated by the heavy wire and ligature wires. Probably a lengthy treatment plan. She has Class II elastic brackets and parafunctional wear on lateral incisors (she probably wore the elastics well) and 2-3 mm gingival recession present. Some higher level of a dental 'IQ' indicated by good oral hygiene, not great, but aware and practicing. She knew how to brush. Treatment could have been suspended by the significant stain present, but some new varnishes with this discoloration are in regular use now.

Maybe this info helps."

Hi. I found this today and posted it on another thread. Someone suggested I post it here as it might be relevant.

May 28, 2013 a young man's body was found floating in the lake. His last name was Begay, the same as Annovedwin's.

He was found only 15 or so days before her dumped body was found not too far away. I am wondering if there could be any connection.

No thank you for alerting me of Gerrick Begay!!! He died only a little over 2 weeks before Annovedwin's murder it seems... I do not think this is a coincidence.

-maybe the Barakzai last name of Annovedwin threw them off? They didn't initially know her name anyhow for a few days bc she was found naked w/ no ID. . They had to release a sketch and hope to get a lead on her ID from public.

Or perhaps LE has asked the media to keep hush hush if it's an ongoing investigation now.

I'm ditto-ing your sarcasm in this statement. There are definitely not so many bodies found in Tempe town lake that the media/LE would forget Gerrick or not notice the connection.

My fear is if George is involved in also killing Gerrick, this pretty much categorizes him as a serial killer. This makes me additionally fearful for Adrienne Salinas and the possible connection to George the night of June 15 as well

I also noticed Gerrick's older sister wrote about her brothers memorial being on June 4. Didn't George hit Annovedwin and get charged with spousal battery/domestic abuse on June 5th? Perhaps Annovedwin was beginning to suspect Douglas Ray George killed Gerrick and DRG could tell.... ?

Thank you for the Pakistani reference. It looks like one of Gerrick's older sisters has a Pakistani name! I'll research and confirm if name is Pakistani. I will not write her name on here as to protect identity.

I've already emailed Pooley about the possible connection guys. I think we brought out something together that if LE doesn't know already, we should make them privy to it.

I will let you guys know if I hear anything back, but I can only assume that LE know of this connection and are investigating it quietly. IMO
