Jury now being recalled. Forensic expert James Sloots is back in the witness box to resume testimony.
by Adam Carter 11:17 AM

Assistant Crown Craig Fraser continuing his questions.
by Adam Carter 11:18 AM

Fraser is asking about continuity of samples that are submitted from police agencies.
by Adam Carter 11:18 AM

"Any item that gets submitted to the Centre for Forensic Sciences is under seal," Sloots says.
by Adam Carter 11:19 AM

The seal is "tamper evident" -- ie: it would be obvious if someone tried to get inside.
by Adam Carter 11:19 AM

"They document any inconsistencies," Sloots says. If scientists believe something wasn't properly sealed, they take note of it and let officers know.

Jury coming in. James Sloots, forensic biologist, still under examination in chief by Craig Fraser. #Bosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 3m3 minutes ago
Discussing process by which samples are submitted to the Centre of Forensic Sciences. Continuity is crucial, so everything is sealed.

Colin Butler ‏@ColinButlerCBC 1m1 minute ago
Testimony has resumed in the #TimBosma trial. Forensic biologist James Sloots is in the witness box being questioned by the crown.

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 1m1 minute ago
Investigators trained to properly sealed items. All seals are documented. #Bosma

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 34s35 seconds ago
Jury has come in to hear more evidence from forensic biologist James Sloots. He's explaining how evidence is maintained at CFS #Bosma

Jury is back and Sloots is back on the stand. Crown is wrapping up their examination. #Bosma

Colin Butler ‏@ColinButlerCBC 22s23 seconds ago
Sloots is telling jurors how the Centre for Forensic Science receives, examines and processes evidence for investigations.

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 16s16 seconds ago
Items are held in secure storage then taken to examination rooms. Procedures to ensure evidence is not contaminated.

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 6s7 seconds ago
CFS = Centre of Forensic Sciences #Bosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 6s7 seconds ago
He bleaches desk, puts down paper, wears mask, gloves. To protect evidence and himself. #Bosma

Once items of evidence are at the CFS, they're separated into what particular section they're supposed to be examined in. Then they're held in secure storage, Sloots says.
by Adam Carter 11:22 AM

Scientists make sure they don't cross contaminate any evidence. "We want to make sure we don't add or take away from the evidence," Sloots says. Masks and gloves, lab coats are worn.
by Adam Carter 11:23 AM

Work on reference samples is done in a separate location than evidence samples.
by Adam Carter 11:24 AM

Scientists also document when they break seals on evidence to examine it.
by Adam Carter 11:25 AM

After examination is performed, samples go back into their original containers.
by Adam Carter 11:25 AM

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 39s39 seconds ago
Sloots explains how they ensure continuity w evidence/prevent contamination. Quality assurance policies in place, he says. #Bosma

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 17s18 seconds ago
Items for testing typically come in sealed containers, form requirements, they wear coats/gloves to prevent contamination etc. #Bosma

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 35s36 seconds ago
The specific procedure is very meticulous. He's walking jury through each step of his process. #Bosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 34s35 seconds ago
Reference samples are looked at in whole different area than evidence samples, so no cross-contamination...Break seal and document it.

"In this case ... all the seals, I checked them myself, were fine. I'm confident the continuity was maintained," Sloots says.
by Adam Carter 11:26 AM

Sloots says he examined the Eliminator itself, after he checked three swabs police provided from the Eliminator. Those swabs from police weren't able to be used for a DNA examination.
by Adam Carter 11:27 AM

Sloots says he and police both agreed that he should examine the Eliminator itself.
by Adam Carter 11:28 AM

"With no evidence on those three swabs, arrangements were made to go look on site at The Eliminator," Sloots says.
by Adam Carter 11:29 AM

Sloots says CFS examiners have a lot of experience with identifying the appearance of blood, even in areas that are difficult to locate.
by Adam Carter 11:30 AM

Court now seeing a diagram Sloots made when examining the Eliminator and where samples were taken.

Sloots says he's confident that the police continuity seals were maintained for all of the items that he examined.

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 27s27 seconds ago
In this case, Sloots confident nothing was tampered with while in his care. December 2013 he did 2 day exam at @OPP_News HQ of Eliminator.

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 12s12 seconds ago
Sloots suggested he should have first-hand look at the Eliminator. #Bosma

Colin Butler ‏@ColinButlerCBC 12s13 seconds ago
Sloots says he requested he get a first-hand look at the Eliminator at the Centre for Forensic Science

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 24s25 seconds ago
Sloots recalls telling police that he wanted to personally examine the Eliminator, given his expertise. #Bosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 16s17 seconds ago
Cops had 3 swabs from Eliminator already but tested inconclusive. "We have a lot of expertise in looking at blood in different conditions."

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 10s10 seconds ago
Swabs of incinerator sent to CFS were negative for DNA, so Sloots suggested to police that he examine the machine in person. #Bosma

Colin Butler ‏@ColinButlerCBC 10s11 seconds ago
Jury now looking at a hand drawn diagram of the Eliminator where samples were taken from blood stains for DNA analysis.

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 17s18 seconds ago
We're seeing schematic of Eliminator with markings for where stain samples were taken. #Bosma

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 13s14 seconds ago
Jury is shown a sketched diagram of the Eliminator, showing where 8 samples were taken from for testing. #Bosma

I bet DM and MS are sitting there right now thinking how lucky they were to have had this personal evidence collection treatment from the expert witness on the stand. ;)

MOO

Two samples were also taken from the trailer itself. They tested positive for the presence for blood, too.
by Adam Carter 11:33 AM

But either no DNA or insufficient DNA was found, Sloots says.
by Adam Carter 11:34 AM

Sloots says that there was "the appearance of cleaning up" on Tim Bosma's truck.
by Adam Carter 11:35 AM

The fact that there was no seats in there, for one, and that there were some burned out seats in the trailer. They were tested for blood as well, but none was found. "There was no carpet present. I smelled spray paint," Sloots says.

Thankfully, DM doesn't know how to do that (as evidenced by the contents of the Yukon).

Colin Butler ‏@ColinButlerCBC 3m3 minutes ago
Out of the eight samples taken from the Eliminator only two tested positive for DNA that couldn't be excluded as #TimBosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 3m3 minutes ago
Jury knows blood on Eliminator was found to likely be from #Bosma.

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 1m1 minute ago
Looked for blood on #Bosma truck seat but it had been burned and no samples were found.

Colin Butler ‏@ColinButlerCBC 54s55 seconds ago
Sloots said the #Bosma pickup truck had sings of cleaning such as the absence of seats, no carpet in the cab, and the smell of paint fumes

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 31s32 seconds ago
Sloots talks about an 'appearance of cleaning up' on the #Bosma truck

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 28s29 seconds ago
Now seeing photo of Diesel canvas bag seized from Dellen Millard's home. It is khaki, with a long cross-body strap. A man-bag. Dirty & worn.

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 4s5 seconds ago
It was found in the washing machine at 5 Maplegate Dr. In Etobicoke, says Crown. Judge says that's hearsay evidence.

Now talking about this bag that was seized from Millard's home.

Fraser asking what would happen to a bag like this if it was washed. Pillay objects. Goodman cautions the jury that they haven't heard if the bag was washed or not.
by Adam Carter 11:39 AM

Sloots says washing a bag would have an impact on DNA. "It removes bloodstains, saliva stains, semen stains."
by Adam Carter 11:40 AM

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 22s23 seconds ago
They looked for blood on the truck seat but it had been burned, was charred. No blood found. #Bosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 26s26 seconds ago
Another witness will testify about where bag was found...Sloots says washing bag would likely affect DNA samples.

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 9s10 seconds ago
Sloots says #Bosma truck looked to have been cleaned up. Seats removed and burned, no carpet, lingering scent of spray paint

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 19s20 seconds ago
Bag tested positive for blood, but no DNA could be obtained. #Bosma
