I'm not sure now which one it was. Possibly this one? Thank you, please tell us what they're saying! :seeya:

Alright, now I watched this very interesting and comprehensive video. This is from 11 months after he went missing. It presents the case more like a story with actors playing the parts of Lars and his friends in Varna. It also tells a bit about his background, he was an only child, very close with his mom, athletic, ambitious, and had a promising job in Wilhelmshaven. His friends describe him as lively, always in good spirits, a devoted soccer fan, sometimes liked to drink, a good friend.

New snippet of info: Lars did not want to eat much during the week vacation in Varna, which surprised his friends because the stay at the hotel was inclusive of food, plus they were planning to party and everyone knows that you should eat well before you drink alcohol.

On July 5 the group was out at night and on the way home his friends popped into a fast food restaurant to grab a quick bite. Lars waited outside, but when they came back out he was nowhere to be seen. However, he was back at the hotel the next morning and told them that other soccer fans, with whom he had had a little bit of a tiff in the bar earlier, had paid some Bulgarian or Russian guys to beat him up. And they did, that's why his eardrum was perforated.

The friends did not know what to make of this story, and neither do I. Why did he not wait in front of the fast food joint for his friends? Did he wander away and those guys grabbed him? How did he get away from them? Why only one punch to the ear? It's a weird story, and I have some doubts. Did he lie to his friends?

On the afternoon before the flight back home Lars complained about pain in his ear and was worried that the flight might damage his hearing. They went to a local doctor (NOT the one at the airport) who told him that he shouldn't fly but rather see a specialist in another clinic.

The friends offered to extend their stay but Lars insisted that they fly back. He went to the clinic with a taxi, and this is the doctor that prescribed the antibiotics after Lars decided he did not want to be operated in Bulgaria. His mother speculates that it stressed him that they did not want to admit him at the hospital after he declined surgery. It was now evening, he was alone, and had to find a place to stay. He then took a taxi and arrived at the Hotel Color.

I guess he must have taken the first dose of antibiotics then.

He called his mom from the hotel at just before midnight and asked her to cancel his credit card because he just paid with the card at the hotel but had a bad feeling about it. He goes on to say that he feels something was wrong in this hotel and that he needed to get away. And so he left in the middle of the night.

Around 3am he called his mom again, he was whispering, saying that four guys were following him and that he was hiding.

Shortly afterwards he sent two text messages to his mom, inquiring what CefC500 is (the antibiotic, I assume). I think he believed that someone had drugged him (that the antibiotic was really something else) and that they were now following him. (imo)

He then caught a taxi and arrived at the airport at dawn.

At 6am he called his mom again saying that he finally arrived at the airport and his mom advised him to see the doctor at the airport. She also booked him a flight. He said to her, "They don't let me fly, they don't let me go". At first she didn't think anything of it but later on she found it odd that he had added that they won't let him go (but she never got to talk to him again to ask him about it). She also found it strange that he said those words before seeing the airport doctor to get another opinion. (I think those words show his fear, jmo.)

Then follows another interview with the airport doctor (the guy must have been interviewed quite a number of times already!) and he tells that Lars was very restless. He indeed told him that he shouldn’t fly. When the airport worker entered Lars got even more nervous and started stuttering and mumbling. They tried to calm him and find out what’s wrong but Lars got up suddenly and ran out leaving all his luggage and phone behind.

Next follows an interview with Marco Klein, the detective in charge of Lars’s case. He says that several witnesses have reported that Lars’s behavior was weird ever since he left the hospital in Varna. He was scared, even panicked.

A pharmacist is then interviewed who confirms that in rare cases this particular antibiotic can lead to behavior such as what Lars exhibited. But she also says that this side effect depends on whether he took another medication simultaneously or drank alcohol.

Sandra, his mother, flew down two weeks after he disappeared and searched for him in hospitals and psychiatric wards.
She says the family believes he is alive and they have strong hope. She says Lars is mentally strong and sees things through.

At the end of the video at 20.02 min they show a map of the airport which shows in red the path Lars ran as shown on the surveillance footage. He ran North/Northwest and jumped over the fence into a sunflower field with 2m (7ft) high plants. A few 100 m further North is the A2 highway that leads to Sofia.

Lastly, they are asking for a witness to contact them. Lars had told his mother that at the airport he had asked a German speaking man for advice about a money transfer from Germany to Varna, possibly the last person who spoke to Lars before he entered the doctor’s office. (The mother had talked to him on the phone about sending him money with Western Union.)

Thanks for that excellent summary Elainera, no wonder this disappearance is so mysterious, it is complex and bizarre!

This is highly interesting, so many things to ponder on. Thank you so much Elainera, this is invaluable information! Now, where to from here? But for the moment I'm going to try to turn in, it's been a long day. See you all later. :offtobed:

In this video at 2.11 - 2.15 min, is he talking to this woman? Is she trying to touch him?

First time seeing that, yes- she does seem to be touching him, holding out arm for a bit too after he walks away and he looks back briefly, imo, speculation.
Did Lars meet a woman and was tricked or loved by her??

I don't know which language that is, I would guess it's Bulgarian?

On the fb page they have flyers for all languages spoken in that area but I'm not able to make out which is what. I think there is a Polish one too. See here (all flyers):

Maybe someone else knows which one is Polish?

You're very welcome. It was a very interesting video too. His mother touches my heart very much. I can't even imagine what she is going through. Bless her.

Regarding, where to go from here? I would start again at the beginning. Search the area around the airport, then spread out further. How often we have seen here that a person was found in an area that had been searched previously, often even more than once. So that's where I would go again. His yellow T Shirt would stick out.

Then visit or at least contact more hospitals and psychiatric wards in the area. He wanted to get home, so I would work my way in the direction of Germany either visiting or sending flyers. Maybe the PI could do that?

Good video in English, with transcript - it mentions the town in Germany where Lars worked, perhaps he also lived there or nearby?

Thanks Dotr...it saved me the time. Good insight about what happened that evening with the fight and all. I can imagine that he was very scared by then.

Having one son, a free spirit, traveling a lot...I can feel her pain so much!

My yesterday's thoughts, not sure if I'm still on that way of thinking now, but I don't wanna to lose it:
I read a bit about drug policy in Bulgaria.

Apparently they have extremely big marijuana marker, controlled by mafia, and getting any kind of prescriprion drug is quite easy if you only are able to find someone who's selling drugs (which as people are saying is extremely easy).
Being under influence of illegal drugs isn't (as far as I know) punished by law, but even a small possesion is - and in 2014 they increased bills for even a small possesions of drugs (also making no difference between users and dealers).

Staying in a country where I feel unsafe and possibly chased by people who are payed to hurt me or even wish to kill me seems ridiculous. I don't believe that he would do that, especially that he couldn't be seemingly irrational or scared as he was able to convince his friends to go and leave him there.

If Lars was suffering badly from his ear, and was in pain, being in cheap hotel where people were openly selling marijuana he could turn desperate and ask them to sell him some kind of painkillers - maybe, or maybe not.

He asked his mother about antibiotic - which almost certainly means that he was feeling weird and experienced something which he didn't expect (he wouldn't be scared or surprised by confusion caused by something else if he would take something voluntarily).
He had like the worst possible circumstances to chill out with some weed there, alone in strange country, hurt and concerned about his health - so I don't believe that he would take anything on his own.
(unless he had no choice because pain was so bad that he tried to get something).

If he bought something it could make other pieces fit a little bit better - I mean:
- he bought some kind of painkillers from these people, saw or hear something, or just get scared learing that he's surrounded by (possibly) criminals - which would explain some of that what he told to his mother,
- he arrived at the airport, with that drug in his pocket to check if he's in condition for fight but he got scared by a man in uniform (if he had that illegal drug in his pocket and was awared of bulgarian anti-drug policy so he got scared and run away to get rid of it),
- he escaped fast as he was scared that someone is chasing him, as he left the airport he chilled out and decided to run somewhere to throw it away (but why so far? why through a fence? because he didn't wanted to be seen with it?)
- and something bad happened, something unrelated to all earlier events possibly increased by trauma or/and effect of antibiotic.

It's a big shame that all of these facts ended up overshadowed by that footage of him "running frantically".

Nonetheless, more I'm reading and watching that footage (thanks to your informations), less frantic and paranoid he seems for me.
As I'm thinking now - he's not acting irrational at any point. He tries to be responsible and logical at every point - staying in Bulgaria (to not take risk, but apparently something different appear), calling his mother, asking her to do all these things, escaping from hotel, going to the airport, getting there, voluntarily visiting doctor... and it appears that run directly to the road, it has to be visible from that point where he's last seen since airport is visible from the road.

Sorry for adding another, most likely useless post, but currently I can't think about anything else.

bbm and adding to my own post, on the fb page the admin wrote in a comment that they are doing just that. Continuously.

What I wonder about is why he didn't take the bus and/or train back to Germany rather than staying there alone. That's what I would do. One of his friends could have traveled with him. Yes it's a long trip but wouldn't it still have been a more appealing solution than staying alone in Varna, even if he had been admitted to the hospital (which he had hoped for according to one video)? Especially after you'd been beaten up two nights before? I find it odd that he opted to stay behind, alone, in pain.

Although Lars does not necessarily have dementia, if he was suffering from mental confusion of some sort- maybe these these general guidelines might help in some small fashion.

[h=1]5 tips for tracking missing persons with dementia[/h]
[h=3]Search and rescue expert says dementia patients are hard to find, but there are some patterns[/h] Dec 11, 2013
1. They'll go until they get stuck

"It's probably counter-intuitive that they go into some of the thickest, nastiest brush or briars," Koester said.
He said persons with severe cases of dementia will head out an exit door, keep going until a barrier or a bend in the road redirects them and, if not found soon enough, they will eventually head off into the brush or into a water feature, where they get stuck, and stay.
2. Water can be a draw
After fighting through brush and trees and other obstacles, some dementia patients will find a welcome relief when a pond, lake, stream, or river opens up in front of them: "My guess is, maybe finally they thought it was a flat place, like a nice sidewalk, to walk."
"I don't even know if they perceive water for what it is," Koester said.
3. Searchers may be ignored, or avoided
"They tend not to respond to searchers' shouts," he said. "They're living so much in the present, they can watch a search team walk right by them."
4. Look to the past
More moderate cases of dementia will see the patient trying to find their way around a neighbourhood, thinking they are in a different location from their past, and seeking out familiar-looking features.
5. Each case is unique, but always the same
"If you've met one dementia subject, you've met one dementia subject," Koester said.
But while there is no general pattern of behaviour that catches all cases, the inability to form short-term memories does guide a wanderer's path. Koester says the dementia patient is making all of his or her decisions based on what they can see right in front of them.

http://foreignersandfriends.com/missing-varna-two-years/

just been on this site...going back to earlier someone was trying to figure out what lars had in his hand....on this site it says that his cell phone and passport was left behind ....could it have been a wallet that was in his hand then? He would have needed money to pay the the taxi at the airport and may have the wallet in his hand still as he left the airport. If it was a wallet maybe he still has credit card...I don't o know whether there has been any activity on account....but if there hasnt then it makes sense still....he asked his mum to cancel his card so maybe he was scared to use it for whatever reason

I also thought it was probably a wallet. He might be carrying it normally in his back trouser pocket. Yes, the credit card was cancelled, I don't know if he had other cards but surely they have monitored them for activity. Still, he probably had a little bit of cash in the wallet (if that's what it was). just my speculation

Regarding point 4, "Look to the past", I was thinking since he is such a huge soccer fan, if he would be drawn to local stadiums and clubs, hanging out in the vicinity of soccer fields, visiting or hanging out around sports bars that show live matches, etc.

You guys have been busy today. One of my kiddos came down sick today so I haven't had time to be here. Really need to get to sleep now, and I'll have to see when I have time to catch up. Just wanted to check in and make sure to say I haven't dropped out of the case.

I did get groceries today and I noticed a lot of regular cars with Poland plates too. I'll have to figure out if you're allowed to put flyers on cars here. Otherwise I can just hang around the parking lot a bit and hand them out. Because when they drive back to Poland they cross East-West through the area Lars would cross through South-North if he's trying to get back to Marne or Wilhelmshaven.

Again, :offtobed:
