I have not commented on this case so far because I just do not have the words. Every time I think I'm reading about the worst case possible, another one comes along. I feel for those children so much. I pray for them, that they can come out of this and have a life that they deserve to have. I cannot fathom what they are going through.

Two possibilities: someone has hired a private attorney for Louise, or it is a private attorney who was appointed by the state. Public defenders offices around the country are really overwhelmed so state bar associations set up volunteer programs where private attorneys register to take cases pro bono when the need arises. So if you are a private criminal defense attorney, you can volunteer to be appointed (similar to a public defender) when a case matching your skills comes up. I am not admitted in California but that's how my states work. Gitana may know specifics about CA's pro bono representation program.

This is the one I got my sister when she was stuck in the hospital. Color pencils work best with them.

Not even close to being caught up, but just wanted to throw this out there:

Several were asking about how the 17 yr old knew to call 911 if the children didn't even know what police officers were. In the presser earlier, it was said that *some* of the children didn't know what police or medications were. I suspect the youngest of the kids (since these things were not a part of their lives in any way) are the ones who don't know what these things are. Although the man (forget his title) speaking at the presser did say the 17 yr old didn't know what medication was.

Ugh. As horrifying as this all is, I'm finding GREAT comfort in knowing all 13 of them are eating as much as they want, as often as they want, and not a one of them is ever going to have to face that fear of torture again.

I expected them them to look at each other a lot more considering they will have been separated for quite some time now but no.

They do show a lack of unity in court IMO
 
In the longer video he glanced at her once and sort of nodded but other than that I didn't see any interaction between them. They both look like they have been slapped with reality and I'm glad. I just hope and pray that they will decide to not go to trial for the sake of their kids.

I'll be watching if the lawyers advise him to cut his ugly hair. I know I sound flippant, but I'm serious. That hair is so off-putting that I can picture a lawyer telling a defendant that it has got to go.

I think the mother looks offended that she is being called to answer for her deeds.

Hello everyone, first post so I'm gonna give a few thoughts. I discovered websleuths years ago but never felt like joining. I've been reading all about this horrible case since thread 1 and finally decided to join!

First of all, I have no words. The absolute horror and devastation that these monsters have caused is far beyond comprehension. At first, like many of you, I thought it couldn't be worse than what we already knew. I really thought this would be a case of only (inexcusable) torture and starvation going back many years. I'm saddened to hear of the lewd conduct and other physical and mental abuse that went on in that house. I hope and pray that each and everyone of the siblings can regain their health, autonomy, and lives back although I know it will be a long journey.

Now, I would like to share a heartbreaking thought I had that puts the sheer horror of those final hours in that house into perspective:
As we know form the presser, the 17 year old daughter and the other siblings had been planning the escape for at least two years. For whatever reason, they decided to do it Sunday. The 17 year old and another sibling left the house in the early hours around about 5 or 6 AM with a cell phone that had photos documenting the abuse to get help. The sibling eventually ran back to the house out of fear while the 17 year old continued on. She called 911 and the cops came and then went to the Turpin house to investigate where the parents were arrested and the siblings freed.

Now, just imagine if you can, how it felt to be inside that house those last two hours. The siblings had to have known the 17 year old had left through the window and they knew why she left too. They must have known that there was a chance that hope was in the future, a chance that they were going to be out of their hell soon. I cannot begin to imagine the anticipation they all felt waiting to see if she returned, if the parents noticed before then, all the "what if"s and "what could be"s that must have been going through their minds.

We've been hearing they are relieved to be free and out of that house of horrors. This makes me so happy for them and I hope that they will have the ability to live to the fullest now.

I know my rambling might have not made sense but I just know those last hours must have lasted eternity and I am full of pride at the bravery and genius of the siblings to come together and plan this escape. I'm so proud the 17 year old continued forward and helped free her siblings.

Agree, but, I would imagine that those children have a lot of fear right now. They're going to need a ton of therapy. My heart is so heavy for them.
 
I WANT TO EXPRESS MY HEARTFELT THANKS TO EACH AND EVERYONE of you for the past 2 thread documenting this Horrific and dastardly behaviour of ANY parent! .. It's been something, so aberrant to Normalcy and against the tenants of any morality and values of Humanity!!

My REAL point is that I want to THANK every here for posting links to court hearing as well as pictures and most of all.. NO body would ever WISH such atrocity on anybody anytime !! But to abuse children from the vulnerable time is so atrocious.. It's beyond explainable and My faith speaks to "Final Judgement.. Beyond Earthly human form... Their Soul's ( both of them-parents) are DOOMED !!

Thank YOU ALL again for keeping me UTD and showing such passion for these children+ adult children!! I commend you ALL!!! {{Hugs}}
 
Pointing to the children's malnourishment, Hestrin said that a 12-year-old has the weight of an average 7-year-old, and a 29-year-old daughter weighs 82 pounds.
The parents would buy food and apparently let the children see it, but not eat it. This included pies left on the counter, Hestrin said.
