Correct. Student records are not covered by FOIA, but by FERPA. Institutions cannot release them -even to students family members- without express consent of student or guardian. Trust me, I know.

Yeah. I mean I get the issue. I was that thin most of my life. But is there any debate that these kids were starved? They seem to have regressed here in terms of development. And in some photos the oldest son has wrinkles associated with emaciation.

The DA was clear. The medical personnel were clear.

The abuse escalated but they were chronically deprived of food.

Can I ask a question of the very brave, amazing survivors we have on the thread ... would a diagnosis of a personality disorder or a psychopathy/sociopathy of your abuser(s) make it better or worse for you? Or would it make no difference to how you felt about it?

I wouldn't call myself a brave survivor tbh and I haven't been through anything that even compares to what these poor babes have suffered, but I do have some experience I think. When my sister and I in our late 40s had a few weeks, when due to tragic circumstances, when we together every day and most nights, we did a lot of talking. Because of the situation that was happening then we were trying to understand how someone could act a certain way, ended talking about when we were kids which we quite rarely did, it was too deep sometimes to go into. Anyway we discovered after looking a few things up that mum was very much NPD, not that I'd ever tell her to her face! lol I actually found it really traumatising looking things up and remembering things I thought I'd forgot. So many traits were perfectly described, the scapegoat and golden child, the apparent lack of love for own children but looking like the perfect mum with all her well behaved kids, the gas lighting, the hoarding and the total selfishness that demands everything be about them - nothing else matters. Mum is/was also very beautiful and young looking at any age, always getting male attention and admiration. And still there's the guilt for every time you feel hatred or bad feelings, it's a constant head **** sometimes to be honest. We actually live our own happy content lives as adults, family parties a couples times a year were quite stressful for me due to this constant confusion regarding my feelings to mum. So it was only when my sis and I starting talking that we really realised what we'd lived with as kids, then we found out what it all meant and put a name to it. Although it has given us some answers It's still upsetting and more so when you read something as sad as this. So in answer to your question, it made me feel better that we had discovered why but also really sad to think about it, which I try not to too much.

Can we give the first names of the kids if released by LE to distinguished any different characteristics or experiences that they might have had? What general guidelines do we need to know when talking about the names of the kids. such as the 17-year old girl who escaped to get help, and the oldest son taking community college classes? How many of the kids names have been released?

It's my understanding that they moved to Murrieta, CA in 2010 after living in Rio Vista, TX. So I don't think they lived in Murrieta, CA in the 1980's. However, a whitepages search for LT shows that at one point she lived in Brea, CA. To me, this is most likely where they lived when the eldest child was born. And a Google maps search shows that Brea, CA is only 8 miles to Disneyland. Maybe the obsession with Disney started there?

I'd not doubt they moved there to be near, or even work at, Disney, but based on the Minnie Mouse cake photo, I think she had a fixation on Disney for a long time. There's a former priest, who wrote a book, called "Chasing The Mouse", iirc. I've not read it yet, but it is about his childhood as a mostly homeless kid, living in poverty, whose Dad would tell them that as soon as things got better, they'd go to Disney, and how the dream got them through. I think he is a Disney fan, still today. Maybe Disney and Cali, were her dreams, because I've got a bad feeling about her, and her siblings', childhood, and it's not poverty.

Many posters are questioning what triggered the 17 year old to decide to escape now. I don't think she "decided" anything. I think that for two years, she had watched for the opportunity to get away undetected and/or get ahold of that phone /take pictures, and the morning she escaped was the first time everything fit together. The preparation for moving very likely provided her the chance. The parents may have forgotten to properly lock up something. They may have had to put children in different rooms due to boxes in the way. In order to help with the packing, the children may have been allowed in rooms normally forbidden and were able to swipe the phone or charger from storage. Or they may have had the phone for two years, but not been allowed in the rooms where children were shackled or not had the chance to snap pictures undetected til then.

I wounder if the oldest son who attended community college was given more "bathroom privileges" (as the Turpins would likely call them,) than the other offspring? I could not imagine having to sit next to this kid in classes, or even in the same room and not notice something wrong? I mean he would have had to have smelled horrible beyond all comprehension.

I've almost changed my mind and think that it's been DT's idea to keep them all secluded, and LT's job to teach them, and keep them in the home, and inside. It may have been her idea to send the son to classes so the she could have a reason to get out of the house. As in; I've taught him as far as I can, he needs outside instruction, but I will go with him, or, She want's to drive, I will teach her and be with her... LT looks like her mind isn't right.

Has anyone seen this photograph anywhere else? It showed up in the TV interview with LT's sister but I haven't seen a quality shot of it. This is the only photo I've seen in which the kids are all wearing different shirts...but they are all wearing matching baggy pink bottoms? For some of the girls, the t-shirts look like they might have celebrities on them but I really can't tell. So bizarre.

She didn't need a reason to go out. She was able to go out anytime she wanted to. She was well known at local fast food places.

I think these charges may be fluid as the investigation continues

Yesterday, the District Attorney made just a few remarks on GMA. He said words to the effect that the children were doing well and working with LE providing good information and would be testifying in the future.

I took that to mean that the children, both minor and adult, are being interviewed and providing good, useful information about their treatment over the years. I'm sure that between now and any future trial, the charges are going to change. More charges are likely to be added, especially in these first weeks/months as new information comes to light.

Do you link that clothing were "filthy". Possible but stating as fact I want to read. Thanks. Looking at photos example all on couch, the jeans look worn and maybe stained from being hand me downs, but I haven't seen that #2 clothing at CC were filthy. Even in photos one with CARS, middle boy pants are rolled up, in another LT has her pants rolled up. Just things I noticed

If she started gambling then that could explain where a lot of their money went since he seemed to have a good paying job at least for awhile. I have to question whether she started doing online gambling too or how many visits she may have taken herself to Vegas while he watched the kids or maybe they found a place to take the kids while they went themselves to Vegas to gamble only.

Also I think their upcoming move was pretty much for the same reasons they left the Texas home. I am guessing their debt was getting out of hand and their place was getting dirty again and they were just going to dump everything and disappear again. It follows a pattern for them to run and just leave everything and let the house foreclose.

There are also casinos on Native American reservations in the area where they live. Pechanga in Temecula and Soboba near San Jacinto are two larger ones.

This was on our local news - BIZARRE coincidence of a woman who, 20 years ago, was held hostage in Perris, along with 15 kids. Crazy ex was perp; if he got 7 life sentences for 6 months of holding *them* hostage, here's hoping DT-LT get much, much more.

At first I thought maybe pajamas, then I noticed how long the pants were on them, they are all cuffed quite a bit.

I don’t think I’ve seen anyone mention it but in this photo the shelves with what I assume are collectibles nags at me. I have a family member who is a borderline hoarder, never had a clean dish in the house, food and animal feces rotting everywhere... Never ever would have shelves like this not been covered with filth and clutter.

In this family member’s case, one of her ex-husbands called CPS at least a couple times I am aware of because of the filth and health/safety of the kids. I found out years later that her next door neighbor had a clerical position at the CPS office and would give her warning that there was going to be a “surprise” visit, then help her clean before the visit. She worked as an elementary school teacher at the same school for at least 30 years and never didn’t smell like a horrible mix of cat pee, poop and cigarettes.
