Hi & welcome. Are you saying it is the 'boys will be boys' mentality?

I don't want to speak for the other poster, but, instead of Amber, Megan and Jessica there were James, Robert, and John the males in charge of our government/courts/LE would be more concerned. They wouldn't stand for all these boys being abused and murdered. Since it is girls they don't see it as important. As Jane Velez Mitchell says, "the war on women".

maybe JAG will just open up about everything that he did, i mean hes been caught, he will be prosecuted and found guilty.... so just give up, and explain everything. i know ppl like him have no remorse for what they do [most of the time] and i dont expect him to have any remorse, BUT i think the least he could do is cooperate and start talking .

Maybe he will be one of those arrogant Ph**ks that will think he's a mastermind and wants to tell his story. His DNA was on her underwear near the lake with no body! Come'on - how can he possibly say NG???

This has been eating at me all day. How did LE know Gardner was at Hernandez Hideaway on Sunday prior to them picking him up there? I saw today on the news that a piece of clothing and a knife were found very close to the restaurant. The thought ran through my mind that maybe Gardner turned himself in???

Apparently, the message hasn't gotten through to girls/women that they CANNOT go jogging/hiking/walking in isolated areas. Do they think because they are physically fit, they can outrun or overpower an attacker? I don't get it!

There are no words to explain the sadness I felt today and no way to convey to her parents and family how badly I feel for them, my heart goes out to them, and pray for for peace in their own souls.

In reading the latest posts on this thread, I wanted to bring this up. Since some of you are talking about the incidence of sexual assaults on women vs men and also about standing up for yourselves, I wanted to pass this information on. I had seen a "blip" of this coverage on TV a while back and the gentlemen who is quoted here, Paul Moss, I think is on the right track. This is not just something women should be concerned and complaining about. It is truly time to 'TAKE BACK OUR STREETS"!

Meanwhile, Paul Moss, a local member of The ManKind Project, said his group is holding a meeting at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 29, in the Ashland Public Library Gresham Room to discuss what men can do about sexual assaults.

"I just think it's time for men to step up and see what we can do as men," Moss said.

Through global New Warrior training adventures, The ManKind Project seeks to help men harness their aggressive energy to become both strong and loving, according to the group's Web site.

I do not agree with this...but just my opinion. I do think everyone cares and worries but when it gets down to politics and agreeing on things that matter, well we are back to partisan crap...i am sure there are some bad judges, just like there are some bad teachers, bad sales clerks. etc...but i don't think it is a sex-biased. JMO and I am a woman with five beautiful nieces between 17-25 about whom i worry constantly. We live in a dangerous world and as another poster pointed out tonight, this is not an American problem, it is worldwide. And our laws are generally much tougher than any in Europe, which is very forgiving...

I don't know for sure if I agree or disagree with that poster, I was just attempting to clarify what she meant! Sorry to go a little off topic here, this is the original post:

So I want to throw out my theory and see what you think. With apologies in advance for going a bit off topic, at least at first.

What do the above three mentioned by SWAG have in common?

They are all named for females, and yes, nothing has really changed.

My theory is that these types of crimes, and the handling/punishment of the perpetrators, are not taken seriously enough because by and large the victims are female. If the epidemic were hitting young boys as frequently, our (mostly male) politicians might be goaded a little more into action.

I've searched for statistics on this and the most conservative I found that seem legitimate say that 1 in 4 girls is sexually abused before the age of 18, compared to 1 in 6 boys. (Source: http://www.darkness2light.org/KnowAb...atistics_2.asp)

Again I am having trouble finding statistics on this--maybe some of Websleuths' crack researchers can--but I bet the statistics on prepubescent victims show an even greater gender disparity.

An event that I think proves my point: remember the Amish schoolhouse shooting in 2006? The perpetrator invaded the school and forced the male students to help him carry in supplies for the attack, then let them go. Then he proceeded to assault the girls.

Now imagine (with credit, IIRC, to Bob Herbert of the New York Times, his idea not mine) if the perpetrator had forced the white students to help him prepare for an attack on the black students, then let them go. Or vice versa. Or the Christian students to help him prepare for an attack on the Muslim ones, or vice versa. You can bet we would still be hearing about it to this day as an object lesson in what is wrong with our society, or in terrorism.

But (my theory) since the victims were "just" girls...business as usual, nothing to see here, move along.

And Amber Dubois? Do you think if she had been male, under the exact same circumstances, she would have been so quickly dismissed as a runaway despite absolutely no supporting evidence?

I don't.

Sorry to go off on such a rant on only my second post here, but I feel better having gotten this off my chest. I too am local (hi, PQ neighbors!) and although I didn't really expect any other outcome, the "body found" news today punched me right in the gut and I am pretty emotional.

...(snipped)....As Jane Velez Mitchell says, "the war on women".

I don't believe it is. Boys are targeted as well, and the difference between 1:4 females being victims as opposed to 1:6 males is small. While I agree that there's an issue with objectifying women as sexual targets, you can't ignore that there's also a War on Children. Think of Adam Walsh (there are others, but he comes to mind first).

while this is just a sad sad event, i agree with you. these things can be prevented! and dont assume bc you live in "north county" or because its daylight out that you are "SAFE". you have to be aware, and she let her guard down that day. unfortunate.

right, i know, sorry-
i meant to state did not agree w/orignal post on this sex-bias. IMO men are more violent than women historically and that makes more women crime victims...nothing new about it.
I do agree that rapes are not taken as seriously as they should be as is often shown by the small sentences given...

I just celebrated my nieces 18th birthday tonite and came home to this news. All I can think of is how Chelsea will never get to celebrate her 18th birthday because her life was savagely taken by some less than human animal. She had here whole life ahead of her. Innocence. She deserved life. But instead some animal decided otherwise. How dare anyone take anothers life. Selfish, animalistic, non human there are no other words to describe this murderer.

I have always been a lurker over here for countless missing person cases. I've been following missing person cases for many years. I hate to admit this on a public outlet like this, but I went to high school with John Gardner. When this story first broke, I thought to myself, I recognize him. But then I brushed it off until I heard from a friend that we went to school with him. Then I racked my brain about him and all of a sudden it came to me tonight. I was an assistant in his class. He was in special ed. Wow....to think back, I had interactions with him all the time not realizing that one day he would wreck havoc on many lives. I am deeply saddened that now our lovely HS will be associated with him.

I really hope we are able to get real honest answers about Amber. Everyone deserves this. God bless Amber's family for assisting Chelsea's family. And everyone really needs to kiss their kiddos extra hard tonight!

from what i understand, they basically had to do the plea in order to keep the little girl from having to take the stand and this probably happens a lot more than we know...another Catch-22 situation.
But there was no reason not to use the maximum available under the plea agreement and that is what is unforgivable in this instance. I do not think there should be a range; everyone who assaults or molests a minor should be given the maximum for that crime.

Hi everyone. I thought I would share this link, since I haven't seen it posted yet:

http://www.10news.com/news/22723155/detail.html

(Sorry if its already been posted)

Apparently Amber's mother had watched/followed Gardner (and other sex offenders in the area) after Amber's disappearance. The Escondido police didn't look into Gardner as a suspect. Obviously, we don't know yet if Gardner had anything to do with Amber's disappearance but its interesting at least.

This isn't in that story but was on the news tonight: Apparently the police had threatened to arrest Amber's mother for this "stalking."

oh wow thats interesting. what hs did you go to? [if u dont mind me asking, i wont hold it against you] also do you know why he was in special ed? i know there are soooo many reasons why someone could be in it.

I was just wondering if Amber went running at that park regularly. It occured to me that maybe this creature has been watching her/stalking her. I just can't see how he would be so brazen to do this in broad daylight unless he was fairly certain of her habits and that other people may not be coming by.

i dont think its so much the person they are looking for, but an oppurtunity. these ppl will only commit crimes in places they feel comfortable in. he probably spent lots of time out there on those trails, and knew when the crowds were coming and what not
