I understand they got DNA from his trash and now reading his car door handle, but still no info on how they came to surveil Deangelo. How many men of his age are living in California or the US for that matter and they just pick this one man??? Family or friend must have tipped off LE, I’m sure.

To Catch a Killer: A Fake Profile on a DNA Site and a Pristine Sample

“To find the DNA match, investigators created a fake profile, posing as a user who was researching family history. DNA information was uploaded into a genealogy site and a match was made with a relative. Investigators eventually zeroed in on the suspect and traced the DNA to Mr. DeAngelo’s front door.

It took about four months, from when the first possible links appeared on GEDmatch to when Mr. DeAngelo was arrested.”

I believe the match was to a 3rd or 4th cousin. They had to trace up that person’s tree to find the paternal ggg grand parents, then down the tree to find every possible male defendant that was a 3rd (or 4th) cousin to the matched dna. Could have been dozens. Then they had to look at each one of those people, to narrow down to their suspects. THEN they collected the discarded dna to see if it was the match to the GSK.

Speculation ....A distant relative loaded dna in janusry 2018 ...this gave the first sign to police that they might be on to a possibility.

The DNA evidence that authorities used to arrest Joseph James DeAngelo in the East Area Rapist case came from swabbing his car door in a public parking lot and later retrieving a used tissue from his trash can, newly released court documents show.

The documents, partially redacted by the court, give the most detailed look yet at how detectives tracked DeAngelo and obtained the evidence that led to his April 24 arrest.

The evidence, which authorities say gave them the strongest link between DeAngelo and a decades-old serial killer-rape spree, came as investigators had the 72-year-old Citrus Heights man under surveillance as a suspect.

A DeAngelo relative had submitted DNA to a genealogy website in early 2018 that authorities determined was close to the suspect they had been looking for. Following an exhaustive effort, they determined that a distant relative of that person — DeAngelo — had been living in areas where many of the crimes had been committed.

Golden State Killer DNA found in Hobby Lobby parking lot

This link is quite a good summary of the released document and mentions the hundreds of hours spent by JJD at the COS where Schnelling was a journalism professor.

I was surprised by the long list of gold and diamond jewellery stolen and other valuable items. I cannot see that he would still have those items but it would be interesting to know what he did with them and how he fenced them, if he did get rid of them.

On Dec. 10, 1975, the Visalia officer waited in a garage they suspected might be targeted and spotted a prowler peeping through a window. The suspect removed his ski mask and begged the cop not to hurt him, in a “juvenile and effeminate” voice, according to records.

I wonder if he has a high pitched soft voice or it was part of his act? Anyone hear him speak besides whispering in court?
 
His neighbours seem to just describe him shouting. At his wife, at his neighbours and at himself. Have you heard the taped phone call? It is of him saying in a raspy, breathy voice over and over "I'm going to kill you, I'm going to kill you etc."

Where's that media thread when I need it?

When I read in the affidavit that he parked in a Hobby Lobby car park, where they got DNA off the car door handle ( good on you LE ) , I did wonder if he paid for his purchases that day.

* In a twist of irony, DeAngelo was ultimately nabbed by evidence recovered from a crime that he can't even be arrested for.

I didn't know that the relative's DNA was uploaded to the genealogy site only weeks before L.E. uploaded their sample from a rape kit to look for a match. How lucky is that? Had L.E. thought of doing that the month before and had struck out, there's no telling how long they may have waited before trying again (if at all).

The judge does not want the rape and sexual assault details publicised as JJD has not been charged with them and he wants to preserve his rights of a fair trial bladi blah blah.....

Give me strength. What about those poor victims' rights? And the MO must be relevant because the SoCal murdered females were raped.

I see it - that surely cannot be coincidental. However, it could just be JJD jotting down his new niece's name as a reminder but all the same it ties that map to D family and I don't believe they have found a connection so far.
