Stupid question but what exactly does City Hall do? Would they keep these kind of records?
There is a San Francisco Office of Vital Records. I cannot access their website from outside the USA (silly!) But might they be helpful too?

sadly it seems like he might have committed suicide...
if he was already having mental health issues, losing his job and his mother refusing to send him more money might have pushed him over the edge...it would also explain why he left all his belongings behind...
if for example he had jumped off the Golden Gate bridge it wouldn't have been unusual if his body had never been recovered..
it seems like suicide...he leaves home as soon as he turns 18...
at that time most people left home..in the late 70's and early 80's i didn't know anyone who stayed with their parents..he would get a job and leave home go to college or the military...
no one wanted to live with their parents once they were 18...
i'm probably exaggerating a bit but i couldn't help but think "maybe some kind of cult?". then again since i was in san francisco in 1980 maybe he was lgbt and didn't want to tell his grandma? Maybe the young people he met validated and accepted him while his family would not have... I certainly don't want to cast doubt on the family in that regard, especially since he says he had been in contact with his grandmother and aunt every week up until that point... it's possible he may have even been infected with HIV and escaped with these people who may have offered him help...

But, the big question remains,
Why would Farren want to punish his grandmother, Beulah, by committing suicide? He loved her more than anything and she loved him tremendously! Why would he want to hurt her by doing this?

Most people don't commit suicide to punish or hurt anyone, though. They just feel too hopeless, depressed, anxious, overwhelmed, in-pain or similar and want that feeling to end. I think they may be seeking peace and at the same time are not able to see things feeling better in the future. They can feel this way while still loving others deeply.
